Chapter 2: The Weird Girl, in the Tennis Shoes
The alarm went off. 6:30 AM, Tuesday. UGH! Today was just another school day. Another boring day where we learn pointless things that we'll never use again. That's what I thought as I walked into the bathroom to take a shower. However, as I turned on the water, I immediately noticed something, different...
"What?" I accidentally said out loud. The water had become clean, bright blue, and all around not the unclean water I was used to. The water felt cool and refreshing, and almost had soothing abilities. After the shower, I got dressed, and walked downstairs to get breakfast. CEREAL!! My Mom walked downstairs while I was eating.
"Good Morning Mom." She seemed frazzled, must have just seen the water.
"Huh? Oh good morning Trent. Did you-"
"See the water? Yeah." I didn't really understand why she was so confused. Although, I guess I didn't pay the bills, so water wasn't one of my major concerns. After finishing my cereal, I started for the door. "Bye mom, see you when I get home."
"Yeah, you too..." She was messing with the sink, turning it on and off again and again. At the bus stop, everyone seemed to be talking about the water.
"Did you see? The water is so... So clean! It's really weird..." Said a tall guy in blue with short hair.
"Yeah, what do you think caused it?" A boy in a yellow shirt with messy hair said. He turned when he heard me coming. "Hey Trent did you-!"
"The water? Is that all everyone's talking about?" The boy nodded his head quickly.
"Hey, cut Ben some slack, it is a weird event." The guy in blue walked over and said. "Besides, how did you react when you saw it."
"It was cool I guess. Come on, it's not that crazy, it's just water." He sighed. "Look Mason, if you want, I can ask Kate what she thinks." Kate was one of my close friends, she was always sensible. "HEY KATE!" I yelled over the people.
"Yeah Trent? What is it?" A blond girl ran over to us. "What do you need?"
"What do you think of the whole, 'situation'." She rolled her eyes.
"It's just water, now if it where insects..." She smiled.
"Aaand let's not go there!" Ben quickly interjected. Kate giggled, and Mason face palmed.
"See, it's not that bad guys." I replied. "Speaking of bad, where's our bus driver, she's 3 minutes late. Don't tell me, is she late because of the water?" And just on cue, the bus came up the hill. "Of course."We piled on, and each of us noticed how, out of it I guess, the driver was.
"Sorry kids," She said in her Southern accent, "Ya'll probably know why I was late. Won't happen again." My group of friends and I walked into the back, and sat down quickly. The bus creaked, and moved on. As we stopped at more stops, students came in commenting on the water situation.
"Seems like everyone was effected by this. Weird huh?" Kate said after a while. "Maybe this is just a dream. What kind of explanation can you give for the water becoming pure?" I shrugged.
"I don't know, but I guess that the teachers will be acting crazy about it too." I stated. "I guess we'll see in a few minutes." We approached the school.
"Hey, I head that a new student is coming to our school!" Ben said, looking over the chair. The bus turned the corner, and screeched to a stop in front of the school.
"See y'all this afternoon!" The bus driver said cheerily as we got off. We poured out of the bus and swarmed into the school. Kate, Ben, Mason and I walked off to our classes. My first class was English. When I got in, I noticed a stunning girl. Not stunning in the I feel attraction to her, but just standing out and impossible to miss.
"Who's the new girl?" I whispered to my desk neighbor Anna.
"I don't know, but wow... She's just so strange, but not in a bad way, I don't know, you know?" She said. And no, I didn't understand her at all. The weird girl in the front of the class just looked around blankly, her eyes vacant. She wore casual clothing, but it was her face and skin that stood out. Her hair was an orange cascade that seemingly flowed, like it was in water. Her sea green eyes, though vacant and dull, seemed to shine with unseen wonders. Her skin was in perfect condition, unblemished and smooth, even just by looking at it.
"Where is she from...?" I asked aloud accidentally. As more students streamed in, they talked about the water, but when they noticed the girl, they switched to talking about her. Finally the late bell rang, and classes started. Our teacher walked to the front.
"Good morning! Today we have a new student, as you have seem to have noticed." She said, looking over the class. "This is Andromeda, she's going to be with us for a few days, and maybe permanently, so I want to all to meet her and welcome her." She smiled, and Andromeda bowed a little. Mrs. Harold showed her to her seat, two rows behind me. Our class went on, and Andromeda said nothing, even when called on. She had only one other class with me, at least before lunch. We both had 6th period together, Math. She sat next to me, and barely took notice. Today we had some practice on the logic (though to me it seemed illogical) part of Geometry. I glanced over on her paper, and saw her using strange symbols for things. For example, when finding one of the angles in a triangle using Sin, she wrote out zeta(ᧄconta) ^4.^12.
"What the heck does that mean?!" I yelled out, bringing my teacher over.
"Huh?" She said, before our teacher, Mr. Taylor, got over.
"Trent, why are you yelling? And what does what mean?" He said, his arms folded.
"Mr. Taylor, Andromeda is doing the equation wrong. Like very wrong." I explained.
"Let me see." He picked up her paper, and his stern face changed to a confused one. "Andromeda, what is this?" She looked up at him confused.
"It's simply the Tertonic equation to find a missing angle in an object. The answer is ᧄ=23. Or as it's put here, ?=23." She said. Mr. Taylor looked more confused then a 1920's citizen dropped into 2017.
"That's correct, but we use x instead of, how do you pronounce that symbol?"
"Yre-Vix" She said with ease. Mr. Taylor just walked away, not knowing what to do anymore, muttering to himself. Finally it was time for Lunch. I met up with Kate and the rest. when I got my food, I noticed Andromeda sitting alone.
"Hey, she's sitting alone, I kinda feel bad... Should we call her over?" Mason said.
"I mean, she doesn't really talk much, maybe she likes sitting alone?" Kate offered. "I'd hate to invade her privacy, since I know how that feels, right Ben?" She said glaring at him.
"Look Kate, I didn't think that you-"
"Just kidding, come on." She said, with a somewhat coy grin. Ben blushed, now I for one wanted to know.
"We're getting off topic, should we invite her-"
"I'll ask her if she wants to join us." I said. I got up and made my way over to her. When I got to her she turned at stared at at me.
"I remember you, from last class." Andromeda said.
"Yeah, um, sorry about calling you out like that." Her face remained blank.
"It's fine, I guess that up here, not everyone understands the same math I do..." What did she mean by that? I just now noticed the necklace she wore.
"Hey, what's that around your neck?" I pointed to it. She held it in her hand and showed me it.
"It's my pendant, and the source of memories I have." She stared into the tan object. It had silver beads embedded into it. In the center was a deep blue square gemstone. 3 of the beads came from the top, bottom, and sides of it, while two diagonal from it.
"It's stunning... Wait, what do you mean by memories? Down where?" I was getting confused.
"I-I lost my memories when I was found by the ocean last week... I've been holding onto my pendant, and I've retained some memories from it. I come from somewhere "down there" and came "up here" I don't know what that means, but I just know that..." This was just adding to my preset confusion.
"Well, uh... Do you wanna come sit with me and my friends?" I offered. She nodded and I showed her over.
"This is Andromeda, Andromeda this is Ben, Kate and Mason." I introduced.
"Hey there!"
"'Sup?"
"Hi." They said. Andromeda bowed.
"Nice to meet you all. I'm Andromeda." They awkwardly nodded and she sat down.
"Hey, Andromeda, again about the pendant thing, Ben's uncle happens to be a jewelry store owner and gemologist, we can see what that stone is and help you out, right Ben?"
"Yeah sure," Ben said. "His store is Keen-Eye Jewelry so just come down there at like 5 or so."
"What's this about a jewel in a pendant? Lemme see!" Kate chimed in. Andromeda lifted up her pendant, and showed off the jewel. "Whoa, it's so pretty! Where did you get it?"
"When I was found, all my memories where gone, so I don't know where I got it."
"Well, that's too bad, I wish I had something just a pretty." Kate sighed. "Oh well, but I think it looks great."
"Yeah..." Said Mason, but he wasn't staring at the gemstone. He was focused on her face, obvious attracted to her.
"Anywho... Lunch is almost over, so we better eat our food." I said to break the mood. We finished lunch and finished our classes for the day. When I got home, I found my mom on her computer. "Hey Mom."I called out.
"Oh, welcome home Trent, how was school?" She asked casually, though still obviously shook up about the water.
"It was good, there's a new girl at school, she's kinda strange, but nice I guess." I said. "By the way, is it okay if I go to Ben's uncle's store today, the girl has this necklace thing that has a stone in it, she's getting it checked out, and I want to see what it is and stuff, is that okay?" She sighed.
"Yeah, I guess it's fine."
"Alright, I leave at 4:50." I said, and ran upstairs, and got to my homework.
Later, at 4:50, I left the house and made my way to the Keen-Eye. The town was large, but since I lived in it, I knew it like the back of my hand. I found Andromeda outside the store.
"Hey Andromeda!" I called out. She turned her head and waved to me.
"I'm ready to get the jewel checked out." She and I walked in and saw Ben's uncle, Daryl, at the counter.
"Ah, hello Trent, who's this?" He said. I introduced them.
"Hello Ms. Andromeda, what brings you to my lovely shop?"
"I came here to have you take a look at my pendent's jewel, I want to see what it is." He picked up the pendent.
"Hm... It looks like a sodalite, maybe a lapis lazuli, where did you get this?"
"I don't know, I had it when I woke up on the beach."
"She has amnesia." I explained. "We're trying to figure out some of her past." He glanced down at us, lowering his glasses.
"I see..." He turned around to get a closer look at it under a light, his black ponytail swishing around. "I really don't know what this is, it changes color when I look closely at it. I really can't tell what it could be." He handed it back to Andromeda.
"Thank you anyways." She said, bowing, and we left.
"Well, that's a bummer." I said as we walked down to the beach.
"At least I know it isn't of normal origin..." She tried to be optimistic. We ended up walking down to the beach.
"Hey, what are we doing over here?" I asked now realizing where we were.
"I love coming down to the ocean." She said, starting to take her shirt off. I quickly turned around.
"We should probably get to our homes."
"I feel like I am home here, at the ocean." I turned around to see her with her arms stretched out, eyes closed, walking into the water. "I love it here..." She stepped into the ocean, the water swishing around her feet. She opened her eyes and stared at me. "Come on in." I took my shirt off, and ran over to the water with her. We swam out, the water calming and shimmering. It was cool and clear, a nice light blue-green shade. Andromeda splashed my face out of no where.
"Hey!" I yelled laughing. She was laughing too, the first time I've ever seen her smile. I splashed her back, and an all out splash war started. Two 17 year olds, just playing in the ocean, splashing each other and giggling like small children. We played until Andromeda pushed me under, and I pulled her with. I swam back to the shore, and she followed. I burst up, and crawled out, laughing, and she joined. We sat on the beach laughing together, over nothing what so ever.
"That was fun!" Andromeda said at last.
"Yeah! I, I haven't had that much fun in years!" I exclaimed, before we began laughing again. We stopped and watched the waves and felt the cool breeze. "I've never thought of the ocean much, until now..." We continued watching. She got up, as did I.
"We should probably go home now, right?" She smiled, half-heartedly. I was about to answer, before a strange sound from the ocean erupted. It sounded like a goat and pig squeal, but muffled and bubbly.
"What was that?" Andromeda stared at the water. Out slid what at first looked like a goat. "What-?"Then I saw the rest. It had the front of a goat, with three eyes. The body came out into two tentacles. Two small nubs for horns came from it's head. It crawled along, contracting it's body up and down to make up for it's lack of legs. "Andromeda, what is it?!" I asked in alarm.
"Don't worry, it's a baby sea goat." She said casually. "They're harmless unless you make them mad..." She was beginning to remember things again. She walked over to it, and it stared up and squealed. "It's alright... Penny. I'll call you Penny, do you like that?" It cocked it's head back and forth.
"But what is it doing here?!" I asked, I didn't want to be left in the dark here.
"It's lost, it sensed my pendent... How did I know that...?" She stood up and looked at me. "I'll take her back to the hospital, I can hide her, I'll see you tomorrow Trent. Don't tell anyone about this." I nodded, I didn't fully believe what I saw, but I understood enough.
"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow." I picked up my shirt, and ran home. When I got home, my mom was angry, but subtly.
"Why are you so late? It's nearly 9 o'clock!" she shook her head. "Just get to bed, you need to sleep." It's been a busy and stressful day for her, I couldn't blame her. I got upstairs and changed. I was tempted to texted my friends, but decided to just sleep. I plopped down on my bed, and fell asleep.
