Chapter 20

A/N: Evan is the trapper, Philip is the Wraith, Amanda is the pig, Anna is the huntress, Albert is the mastermind

------------------------------------------------------------------------

You were beginning to feel a bit paranoid because you couldn't figure out who was watching you whenever you were in the hallways, going to your room, or leaving between feeding or activity times. Hell, after hours as well. It didn't feel malicious, more curious than anything but, it still unnerved you. You hoped whatever it was or who it was, it would sort itself out and show itself or leave you alone. Your friends were starting to notice that you were a bit jittery. Focusing on crocheting helped you not to focus on the feeling of being watched. At the moment, you are crocheting a doll for Danny, Stu, and Billy when you hear a noise coming out of the vent.

"What the hell was that?" You looked towards the vent in your room and heard scuffling before it disappeared. Curiosity was knocking but, common sense was keeping you rooted to the bed and staring at the door. After a few tense moments, you decide to leave the crochet alone and get ready for lunchtime even if you will be a little early. You rather be ready and able to leave in a hurry. Once you got ready, you picked up the crochet doll of Danny to finish up his body and arms before you had to go. Leaving your crochet stuff, you grabbed your keys and phone leaving your room, and the feeling of being watched returned. It was more intense and as you stared at the vents you were able to pick up scuffling that you knew wasn't in your head.

"You're okay Y/N?" You jumped turning to Lawrence who was looking at what you were looking at before smiling playfully. "Working with the nuts hasn't made you nutty yet, right?" You shook your head at him cracking a fake smile

"No, I haven't lost any screws." Little did he know, over half of them were loose. "Just thought I heard something, just my imagination." You knew damn well it wasn't in your head but, you weren't about to explain to him that you were hearing scuffling in the vents. Well, there were other patients, and psych patients were known to climb into ceilings so, why wouldn't they get into the vents? It sounded farfetched and hardly believable but, you did it for your own sake.

"Good, we still need you here after all. Those guys have never been this cooperative and calm. You're a miracle worker." More like you try to understand them and treat them the way you want to be treated but, you digress. You made your way to the lunchroom where they were online getting their food and waved to each of them while Lawrence sat with the other security guards. It used to be 25 guards, then 20 guards and now you're down to 12 guards. They concluded that things are less likely to happen when you're there, but they still weren't going to be lax on their jobs. The two of you made it to the cafeteria where they were still entering and you stayed by them while Lawrence walked ahead to be with the other guards. You pretended not to notice how half of them would kill him with their looks if they could.

"Good afternoon lovelies!" You went to sit at a random table watching as they all got their trays and sat wherever they wanted to sit. Evan and Philip sat with you along with Albert, Anna, and surprisingly Amanda. The Sinclair brothers were sitting at the table behind you with Jason and Bubba. It was nice and it's been a while since you had a conversation with Jason and Bubba but, at the same time you wanted to stay where you were because the 'spoke when spoken to' group went out of their way to sit with you. Decisions, decisions.

"You seem to be lost in thought, what's on your mind?" You turned to Albert and shrugged your shoulders.

"Nothing much, I'm always thinking of something. Usually, a new crafting project or some music I'm in the mood to listen to." You didn't want to mention how you were thinking about what was in the vents watching you and whether or not it was malicious. You don't think it was malicious considering it had many opportunities to hurt you and it didn't. You would rather it show yourself so you could stop thinking it was another patient. You would much rather have another one from the entity realm because you get along just fine with the ones from there.

"Well get out of your head and listen to us." How forceful and sweet of Amanda to want your attention. She was emotionally stunted so she was learning to trust you and be nice so you count any form of communication with her as a win. You tuned into the conversation adding input here and there until they brought up hearing noises in their ceilings.

"I know I'm crazy but, I am not that crazy! I'm telling you, there's something or someone in the vents!" You felt your heart rate pick up at that, so it wasn't just you? There was something in the vents and it was watching you, observing.

"Yeah, I've heard it. I figured it was rats or something. No regular person can fit and move that fast in the vents." Okay, so you were going to believe the former killers and believe whatever was in the vents was not a human. What if it was a giant humanoid rat creature? Your heart cannot handle a human-sized rodent you'll have a heart attack right on the spot.

"Well whatever it is, whether it's real or in your heads it hadn't bothered us." Anna was being the voice of reason but, you had a feeling that she heard it too and was speaking to ease herself mostly.

"I haven't heard much besides the occasion scuffle here and there." You're a liar,  whether or not they believed you they didn't give it away. They continued having conversations having you join them with input here and there until it was time for all of them to return to their rooms. You stood by the exit waving, and hugging those that wanted to be hugged. Pyramid picked you up off the floor as usual and you could've sworn you felt eyes searing into your skull from above but, figured it was just Pyramid or Michael staring at you. Once all of them were out, you went back to your room intending to continue the crochet dolls you made. When entered and shut the door to your room you immediately noticed that the vent was open and swinging. You froze at the doorway and looked around seeing that the bathroom door you left open was closed.

"Well, fuck." You were stuck between freeze, flight, or fight with a tinge of curiosity. You had your shoes off but, would gladly risk slipping and sliding on the floors with your socks. You didn't have your grippy socks on. Lost in thought you were caught off guard when your bathroom door opened and all your breath left your body. It was a literal fucking alien. It was tall about eight feet or nine maybe and sleek black color. It had a long helmet-like head, no visible eyes, and a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth. You trailed down its body taking in the bony exoskeleton and sharp claws that were turned inwards to itself and its tail was curled around on the ground. The two of you stood still just staring at each other and all the alarm bells in your head were ringing but, you knew this was the thing in the vents.

"You're the one that was in the vents." You didn't expect an answer but, was surprised when it nodded its head. "You could understand me?" Once again it nodded and even though it was very threatening and dangerous it didn't seem to be threatening. It wasn't baring its teeth, its claws were turned to itself, its tail was curled around it and it was hunched over. The more you stared you realized that you read about this creature somewhere in a fantasy book. It started with an X but you can't remember the full name right now. "Are you a male?" You watched as he nodded his head with a slight grin. This was so fascinating that he was so intelligent and able to understand you. He was also able to hide and go undetected for who knows how long. "Is it only you?" He shook his head and that made your heart skip a beat. It seemed he grew tired of the questions and with one last look at you, he closed your bathroom door, went back up into the vents, and closed it too. He was much smarter than he was letting on. You stood there contemplating if that was real and determining that it was, you got a headache.

"Sleep time it is." You undressed down to your garments and face-planted on the bed. The crocheting and anything else can wait until later or even tomorrow because you need a nap.

I was looking at your guy's comments and a lot of you thought it was going to be Candyman which was a good guess but, only @KitsuneKitsune7 got it right. Thank you and enjoy!
