Appledip | @Witto150
Hey guys! Welcome back to our Interview book. I am your host and interviewer for today, Appledip_14 here with one of our amazing winners, Witto150 to sip some tea. She is the writer of the book, Golden Pear. Pick up your cups and get ready!!
Hey Witto! I'm Appledip and I will be taking your interview today. First of all, congratulations on coming first in the Constellations Awards! Ahh. . .how do you feel? Did you see that coming?
Hello, thank you for your time. Thank you so much, and I didn't see it coming until it slapped me XD No matter how many times I enter, it's always a big surprise.
Haha! I get what you are saying. So before we proceed any further, tell us a bit about yourself!
Here goes nothing :-D Hi! I am Witto, also as known as Evelin A. Hope ;-)
I studied IT and struggle with my mother Language on daily basis. However, sometime during middle school I started to have stories in my mind, that refused to let me be. I had to get them out and writing was my first choice as my hands are left when drawing XD I found my new hobby, and I poured years into it by now, and I don't regret it a bit. I've met awesome people, be it a reader or fellow author, who helped me along the way.
That's so nice! How did you get to know about Wattpad? When did you join it?
I found out about Wattpad shortly after I restarted my writing habits in English (it's my second passive language). I wanted to start anew, and Wattpad turned out to be the first site in the results. The features charmed me (inserting pictures, in-line comments), so I didn't need long to decide. I'm here since October 2017, and I don't plan to go away any time soon.
I am pretty sure all your readers will be so happy after hearing that!
So, did you join Wattpad as a reader and then started posting your own content or vice-versa?
I think I was a reader at the start, and I made an account after reading one story, and I wanted to support the author. Unfortunately, after making the account I failed to find this story -_- Taking everything in took some time, but since my Muse kicked me, I started to upload here my first serious and open Sonic Fanfictions for everybody to read.
I see! That's so cool!
How would you describe your writing style as?
Chaotic... XD That's how it always starts. The sudden idea tortures me until I give it a shape, and usually only (many) chapters later I start think where I'm heading and how I want to end this story. Then I focus on world-building and description as I want for my reader to understand the story the best way possible.
Some readers called my writing style simple and charming and that the flow was fantastic. One reviewer thanked me for simple structure and vocabulary, so even readers with concentration problems could enjoy my story. I don't try to go for "high literature", but I do my best to use unique and ever-expanding vocabulary.
I also may be one of the rare authors, who focus on setting and mood before starting any action or dialogue. It turns my stories a bit into "slowpokes", but I personally dislike hectic pacing, missing all the nice scenery that may be around me as I read a story.
Yeah...I totally get where you are coming from. Gotta set the vibe first, eh? Haha!
Okay so, what are your go-to genres as a reader? Any favourite book or writer, on or off wattpad...?
My Top genres are Fantasy, Action, Adventure, and Comedy. I prefer for the story to be lighthearted with occasional drama or angst, but nothing overly dark or depressing. Slice-of-life is also a welcomed change as I may learn something new, and not every hero has to go save the planet, right? XD
Sometimes just changing dippers is enough big quest XD Before I learned to read, I forced my oldest sister to read me The Mysterious Island by J. Verne (and I read that book about 4 times on my own). Also, Roger Zelazny is one of the rare authors I remember their names XD (I'm awful at remembering them ^_^;)
From WP I read book/s from karinberry , michh_44 , theashesofthephoenix , ShadowAceSonic and awesomeSTG. I have a list called "I recommend" with a lot of books I checked and loved. All of you are free to browse it, and I hope it helps you find a new gem for you <3
Oooh that's cool! You have some good choices there. And haha, don't worry. Even I lie in the same category of not being able to remember names.
So how did you get the idea of writing such a captivating and striking book? It's so different and unique. What was the inspiration behind the whole plot/story-line?
The secret is in... randomness. Yes, I'm not kidding even if I'm right now giggling XD That's how all of my stories starts. A random idea, memory, excitement from a song or book/anime I've seen, or just a picture/fan art.
I wonder if at that time I was reading about Greek Mythology or some reverse harem story, as those two had to be my main inspiration. Apple seemed to be too ordinary, so I changed it into Pear. Trust me, I wasn't thinking too deeply about this XD
I really agree with you there. Random ideas really are a start to a wonderful book. Just good execution is required.
Which brings us back to your book. It seems so well thought out and planned. How did you manage to make the blurb and the characters so enticing and strong? Any advice for the fellow writers reading your interview? P.s I already had it in my Library...haha!
Well thought... *cough* ... planned *cough* XD I'm glad it seems so XD It's funny, but in this case I had a clear image about my blurb. I think the actual one is around the 4th version, but all the changes were minor (adjusting word, separating paragraph into two, adding a detail).
I have a few tips for blurbs:
1) Keep it short. I dislike reading a blurb that feels like a prologue. Think around 3 short paragraphs (like two tweets).
2) If you need to use part of your story, add it after the actual blurb. I often noticed mistakes that were fixed in the book.
3) Don't start with rankings or Awards ;-) That's fine at the end.
4) Don't go describing your MCs in a "shopping list" style, adding a question like a hook. That doesn't tell much about your story.
5) Don't write "Check chapter XX for the (full) summary". Also repeating the blurb inside the book doesn't look nice too.
6) Don't have multiple questions at the end. One is good enough, but you don't need it to make a hook ;-)
7) If you have a logline, add it at the start and separate it from the blurb. That way you can use the short space in a preview to the max.
And for characters:
1) Don't concentrate on visual features. Nobody is Greek God beautiful. Let them have physical flaws - freckles, oily hair, limping, bad eyesight, overbite, short legs, and so on.
2) Let them make mistakes, but don't make them pure jerks. And if they are jerks, ask yourself why would they be? Did they have "toxic" upbringing, had they move every couple of months, did a tragedy close their heart?
3) Look around you and see if you can find a personal trait from somebody you know and you may use for your character. May it be pushing up glasses, digging in their nose, scratching, stuttering, or tapping their feet while waiting/thinking, or just them fidgeting and playing with whatever is close.
4) Let them use body language and gestures to express their mood.
5) Don't let the reader know A-Z about them in the first chapters. If they have scar on their body, just hint why and from when. Let your MC remember the pain it causes by experiencing similar situation in the present. It's not just the reader who gets to know them but your other MC as well. Allow both to discover this mystery page by page ;-)
I guess this is all I can think right now. Hope it helps you :-)
PS. Thank you for adding it to your Library <3
Haha...of course! And those are some really helpful tips you've got there!
So did you plan your book beforehand and write it or did you plan and write it along the way while posting it on wattpad?
Before I publish any book, I make sure to have a lot of chapters drafted and some edited. I dislike the idea of publishing ten chapters and then going on a long hiatus because of lack of ideas or energy to continue. Sometimes it turns out I have the whole book ready before publishing, but with longer stories I tend to go for 50%+ at least.
What do you personally prefer though, as a writer? Planning and writing the book beforehand or doing that along the way while posting it?
I'm probably a mix of both. I write a lot without a clear idea, and once I see the story grows, I sit down and make notes. Not just once a certain scene changed form while I wrote it despite ten versions in my notes XD Then I start publishing a certain set of chapters that allows me to write and edit more while the story nears its end.
So you have written your book, Golden Pear, in third person. Do you plan to write a book in first person in future? Venture out to the unknowns. . .? Haha!
I think I prefer third person and all knowing narrator who can see into everybody's head. But I make sure to keep this POV consistent for one character for some time before changing it to avoid confusion. I've tried first person, but I'm not fully comfortable as I like to follow more people :-)
I see...
Which character of yours do you relate to the most and why?
I think the four MCs (Freya, Rigaku, Kagetsu, and Aiyoku) represent me as all of them have something from me. I let them speak my mind when I'm too shy to speak for myself ^_^; I'm not good in communication with people.
Wow! So are your characters inspired by someone in real life too or are they just figments of your imagination? Apart from the fact that they have a couple similar qualities as you.
I think I went here with pre-made types (Charming Aiyoku, delinquent Kagetsu, or cold Rigaku), and added a secret twist to them by including their "second face". The whole story has anime-vibes, so my inspiration comes from many anime series I've seen :-)
Ooooh! That's so cool!
Ah...so, if you get a chance to spend an hour with any one of your characters, then which one would it be and why? What will you talk about or do. . .anything specific you might have in mind?
I don't know as I like all of them :-D But I guess I would spend it with Freya-chan as we both dislike girly stuff but loves sushi :-D
Okay, so would you like to tell us a bit about your current works, now? Any future ideas we might see popping up on your profile in the near future?
Golden Pear is my second biggest project here and the second original story I've published. I plan to finish it for Wattys (maybe impossible, but I shall try). After this, I want to restart NinRai - 2 - Face Stealer and maybe rewriting into English an old story I also didn't finish, but it's very dear to my heart. But this one is also a very long story, so let's see. My Sonic FFs are also still waiting for continuation ^_^;
So many stories, so little time XD
True true...
Now a very very important question for you! How do you deal with a writer's block? I mean, they are so stubborn! Literal nightmares for every writer!
I encountered it a few times, and usually skipping the problematic scene is all I need to move on. When I'm bored or too lazy to write, I edit what I have, do graphical banners for my stories, or play with Cover (if I made it). Sometimes taking a few days of off writing can do wonders as well.
Ah! Wow...I'll try that someday. Haha!
So are there any social media accounts of yours, you would like to promote via this interview?
I don't like social media XD I usually can't keep up with them, but I have my author's webpage: https://eahope.webnode.cz/
It was such a joy getting to know you, Witto! Your advices are so good and amazing! Thanks for being such a good sport! Any parting words you would like to say to your fellow readers and supporters?
I'm happy to spend some time with you as well! It was a joy to fill it <3 I want to thank you all for supporting my story. I'm happy you like it, that it can brighten your days as that is the best award any author can receive. I'll do my best to finish Golden Pear in time for Wattys and if not, whatever, I shall finish it in any case so you can see (and me too) where this journey goes XD
Best Regards and have a fantastic day/night <3
