Pressures of a New Place Roll My Way
A/N: It's been a little while...also, this is a long chapter lol.
Tyler
I stand up and stretch, then bend down to put my tools back in their designated trays in the bus toolbox. I check the time: 6:50. We don't have to leave until eight o'clock, and it's a ten hour drive to Mohegan Sun Arena.
I put the toolbox back into one of the kitchen cabinets and then walk off the bus. Josh and Mark should be getting up soon. I don't know about Jenna, though. She seemed pretty tired last night when she fell asleep on my shoulder during a movie.
Opening and closing the front door quietly, I walk into the kitchen, where Josh and Mark are heating up water for coffee in the coffeemaker.
"Mornin'," Josh greets quietly while grabbing a mug out of a nearby cabinet.
"The crew should be here shortly," Mark says, glancing at the stove clock.
I nod, then glance at the living room doorway. "Is Jenna up yet?"
Josh shakes his head. "We haven't woken her. She seemed so tired last night."
We just decided to slide a pillow under Jenna's head and throw a blanket on top of her. Hopefully she won't be too mad when she wakes up on the couch. Besides, Mark and Josh already claimed the guest bedroom.
"We should probably wake her up by 7:30 at the latest. Mark, do you think you can load some of her bags?"
"I think she has most of her stuff on there already," he replies. "The stuff that she doesn't have she'll probably need to get ready this morning."
"Hmm...okay." I sit down at the kitchen island, resting my chin on my hand. "Is there anything else we might've missed?"
Josh and Mark both shake their heads. "I think we're good," Josh says.
"And we've worked out who's driving the equipment truck and trailer?"
The two nod.
"Okay. Well, I'm going to go get dressed." I stand up and walk down the hall to my room, tiptoeing past the living room doorway while stealing a glance at the couch. Jenna's pretty blonde hair spills over the armrest like a golden waterfall.
Walking into my room, I go to my closet and change into a cobalt-blue shirt and black skinny jeans. After packing up leftover hygiene items from my bathroom, I walk into the living room to see how Jenna's coming. She's still asleep, part of the blanket bunched up in her hands.
I kneel next to her, hesitating to wake her up. She's so
peaceful and beautiful, but I know we need to get going soon. I gently kiss her right hand, then touch her shoulder, giving her a gentle shake.
"Hm?" she murmurs, her eyelids fluttering open. She grins when her eyes focus on me. "Hey...what time is it?"
I check my watch as she sits up and stretches. "Seven. Mark wants us to leave by 8:00 at the very latest. Are you packed?"
She nods. "Everything except for my toiletries is on the bus."
"Okay, that's perfect. Sorry for leaving you on the couch. I didn't want to wake you up and Mark and Josh kinda took the guest bedroom..." My face heats up.
Jenna giggles. "It's okay. Your couch is pretty comfy."
I grin. "Well, I should probably let you get ready and help the guys load anything extra so we can get going soon. I figured we could eat breakfast on the road. We have some cereal and stuff on the bus."
"Sounds good! I'll go get ready then." She stands up and heads down the hall to the bathroom as I head outside to help Mark and Josh.
Jenna
"We have a grand selection of Coco Puffs, Frosted Flakes, Cheerios, Lucky Charms, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch," Tyler says, gesturing to the open cabinet. "Pick your poison. There's also oatmeal packets over here and a toaster for, well...toast." He chuckles awkwardly.
"Um...there's a lot to choose from," I reply, studying the boxes.
"You could always combine flavors," Josh suggests from the bus couch.
Tyler and I both scrunch our noses. "Don't listen to him," he says. "Josh pours his milk before his cereal!" Mark and I gasp dramatically.
Josh looks up from his phone, feigning shock. "Tyler! That was supposed to be between us! I thought we were friends!"
"I'm just trying to protect her from the monster you are!" Tyler says, stepping in front of me defensively.
"Guys, it's only 8:30 in the morning. We have the whole tour for drama," Mark jokes.
The two sigh in defeat. "I suppose so," Josh replies. "But I'm keeping my eye on you..." He narrows his eyes and holds up an oh-so-threatening fist.
Tyler turns back to me, raising his eyebrows. I forgot we were supposed to be picking cereal.
"Um...I guess I'll have Frosted Flakes," I say, grabbing the box. Tyler gets the milk out of the fridge for me, then grabs the Coco Puffs. We pour our cereal into matching green plastic bowls, then take a seat at the booth table across from each other. We eat in silence for a few minutes.
The bus hits a bump, sending some of the milk from my bowl onto my lap. "I should probably change," I say. Finishing my cereal, I place the bowl in the sink and go into the bunks. Shutting the door, I reflexively reach for the lock. Then I remember it doesn't hav--wait a second! I look at the doorknob to see a lock on it. Tyler said it didn't lock, though.
I turn around and pull a pair of jean shorts out of my suitcase stored under my bunk--the one furthest from the door. After changing and putting the wet pair in a plastic bag, I unlock the door and open it. "Hey Tyler, could you come here for a second?"
He rises from the couch. "Everything okay?" He asks, stepping inside the door.
"Yeah, but...I thought you told me there wasn't a lock on this?"
He smiles. "I just replaced the doorknob this morning."
I can't contain my smile. "Really!?"
He nods, stepping past me. "And that's not the only thing I did." He pushes my bunk's curtain aside to reveal a plug-in receptacle on the wall. "I got you a night light, too. When your curtain is closed, it shouldn't be very visible to anyone else."
I hug him. "Aw, thank you so much! That was so thoughtful! I didn't think you paid any attention to that!"
"I just want my girl to be as comfortable as possible on a bus full of guys." We chuckle and return to the main part of the bus.
We roll into the Mohegan Sun Arena parking lot around seven p.m. Fall Out Boy is already there, but I don't see any sign of Panic! At the Disco's bus. Pete is standing out in the parking lot when we roll in. He waves as we come to a stop. The four of us climb out to see the guys driving the equipment van pulling in behind us.
"It's about time!" Pete exclaims, striding over. "The other guys are in the arena setting up. Panic! Isn't here yet. Brendon called us and said he won't be here until 8-ish." He claps his hands together. "But in the meantime, we were wondering if you wanted to help us with something."
Everyone glances at each other. "Sure," Tyler says, sticking his hands in pockets.
Pete grins. "Great. Today is Joe's birthday, and Patrick is actually at a store down the street buying him a cake and I think some ice cream, too."
"Sweet!" Josh replies. "So...what do you need us for?"
"Well, right now Joe and Andy are working with the crew in the arena, and I wanted your help to stick up streamers in our bus."
"Of course we'll help!" I exclaim.
"Sweet! Let's get started, then!" He turns and leads us to his bus.
Patrick shows up at 7:15. We all jump when he opens the bus door. "I didn't know we were decorating, Pete," he remarks, chuckling.
Pete grins. "I thought it would be fun!" He turns to his right. "Okay, Josh, you have a new job: go up front to the driver's seat and keep a lookout for Joe. We want him to be surprised, not the other way around." Pete looks at me. "Could you help Patrick get the cake set up?"
"Sure," I reply, going over to the kitchen part of the bus. Patrick sticks a gallon of neopolitan ice cream in the small freezer.
"I got a chocolate cake, some number-shaped candles, and a lighter. I didn't think I'd have time to get it customized, though. It would've been cool to put his name on it." He pulls the cake out of the grocery bag.
"I'm sure he'll still like it either way." An idea pops into my head. "Actually...how far is the store from here? I've frosted cakes before, I bet I could buy some frosting and bags and do it!"
"It was a ten-minute walk over there. You can go if you think you'll make it back quickly. Take a right when you get to the end of the parking lot." Patrick checks his watch.
"Okay!" I turn to see my boyfriend taping up red streamers. "Hey Ty, do you wanna run to the store with me? I'm going to pick up some frosting and piping bags for Joe's cake."
"That's a great idea, Jenna!" Pete exclaims.
Tyler climbs down from the couch. "Sure, I'll go."
I grin as we leave the bus and start to walk across the parking lot. It's warm and calm outside, the sky a soft orange color from the almost-set sun.
We turn right as we get to the sidewalk. I turn to Tyler and hold out my hand. "Ready?"
He grins and grabs it, then we start running down the sidewalk to the store.
"Wow, you are good at this," Patrick says as I start frosting the J in "Happy Birthday, Joe!"
"Thanks! Cooking and baking is a hobby of mine. I would've made homemade frosting if I had the equipment and wasn't on a time crunch. But this will be just as good."
The floor starts pulsing, then Josh runs into the sitting area from the front of the bus. "They're coming!"
Pete runs to the door, his hand hovering over the light switch on the wall beside it. "Hurry, Jenna!"
"I'm trying!" I finish off the E and Patrick lights the candles as the other boys find places to pop up and surprise Joe.
Panicking, I throw the bag and frosting container in the sink, then kneel beside Tyler hiding at the foot of the couch. Pete flicks off the lights, the candle flames the only source of light. My brain decides to remind me that I'm the only girl in the room. I huddle closer to Ty.
Two voices converse outside, then the door latch clicks.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" We all yell as Joe steps onto the bus, Andy right behind him. Pete turns on the lights.
"Aw, you guys!" Joe gushes. "You shouldn't have!"
"But we did," Pete says, throwing an arm around his bandmate's shoulder. "Happy Birthday my good buddy."
"And I had to put up with Joe complaining for an hour about you two not helping us set up," Andy complains, smirking.
Patrick pats the booth bench. "Take a seat."
Joe sits down in front of his cake as the rest of us stand around him. We start singing. I never realized that you could sing harmonies to "Happy Birthday" until I sang it with two bands.
I decide to take the ice cream out of the freezer and find some bowls. "Hey Pete," I call, waving him over. "Do you have an ice cream scoop? I can't find one in your cookware drawer."
"Oops..." he trails off. "I guess we could use spoons?"
I laugh. "I suppose. They may bend depending on how frozen the ice cream is."
He waves his hand. "It'll be fine." He grabs a spoon and helps me dish out the ice cream for everyone. Andy grabs some plates out of a cabinet and starts cutting the cake.
"Aw, you guys even had it personalized for me," Joe gushes.
"That was all Jenna," Tyler brags. I blush and hang my head, focusing on scooping the ice cream.
"Really!?" he exclaims, turning in his seat. "That looks awesome!"
I wave my hand, "Oh, it was nothing."
"Pfft, whatever. I hereby declare Jenna to be the designated foodie and decorator! All in favor say 'I'!"
"I!" all of the boys exclaim. I laugh as I start handing out the ice cream.
Fall Out Boy sits at the booth while the rest of us take the couches. I stay at the sink and clean up the frosting supplies I threw in earlier. I suppose I'll take them back to our bus when we're done.
"We seem so divided," Joe says. "Let's all sit in a circle on the floor!" His eyes land on me. "You too, Jenna. You can work on that later."
I grab my bowl of ice cream and join everyone on the floor. Josh scoots over to let me squeeze in next to Ty. Joe stands up and grabs something from a cabinet by their TV.
"Ugh, not Catchphrase," Pete groans.
Joe grins. "It's my birthday." He looks around the circle. "Everyone knows how to play, right?" All of us nod. "Great! I'll start." He presses the on button. "Category is food...Okay, chicken embryos."
"Um...eggs?" Mark guesses with a bewildered look on his face.
Joe grins and passes the device to Andy. "Um...it has noodles..."
"Mac n Cheese!"
"Spaghetti!" I yell.
"Yes!"
It's now Mark's turn. "Um...we just ate this..."
"Cake!"
"Ice cream!" Pete yells.
He nods and hands it to Tyler. "Ugh, they're yellow and I hate them!"
"BANANAS!" Josh and Mark yell in unison.
"Okay, this is part of it. You put ice cream on top and a cherry--"
"Banana split!" I guess.
"Yes!"
"Hold on guys, pause it," Patrick says. "Brendon's calling." He sets his phone on the floor and presses the speaker button. "Hey man, where are you at?"
"Hey," Brendon's voice says. An unsettling feeling washes over me. I haven't heard his voice since high school, other than in my dreams. "Our bus broke down. We're still about 6 hours away. I didn't want to exhaust our driver, so we're calling it a night. The show isn't for 4 more days anyways. We'll probably get an early start and be there around noon tomorrow."
"Okay man, well thanks for updating us. Stay safe, alright?"
"We will. Did the Pilots make it there alright?"
"They did. We've been celebrating Joe's birthday."
"Aw man, tell him happy birthday for me. I wish we could be there!"
"Don't sweat it, man," Joe butts in. "Take care, alright?"
"K. See ya!"
"Bye!" Patrick says, hanging up the phone.
I let out a quiet sigh of relief. At least I can postpone seeing Brendon a little longer.
The four of us walk back to our bus around 9:00 after playing more of Catchphrase.
Tyler casually puts his arm around my shoulders. "So, we apologize for not doing this earlier, but we want to introduce you to the crew. They rode in the equipment van today."
"Oh, okay," I reply.
He grins as Mark opens the door to the bus. "They should already be in here."
Sure enough, four guys are chatting in the living room when we step in.
"We were wondering when you guys would be back," a guy wearing a flat-bill hat says.
"Just hanging out with Fall Out Boy," Josh replies.
Tyler claps his hands together. "Okay, so I know I told you guys I'd introduce you to Jenna. Well, here she is!" He makes a sweeping motion at me as I feel a blush creeping up my face.
"Hi...," I greet, waving slightly. "As Tyler said, I'm Jenna. I'm grateful that you guys are letting me tour with you."
The guys smile in return.
"So, I guess I'll begin the introductions," Tyler continues. He puts his arm around the guy in the flat-billed cap. "This is Michael. He's our tour manager. He mainly helps keep us on schedule." He walks over to a tall, husky guy. "This is Ben. He's our sound guy."
"Hi," Ben says quietly. I smile.
"Don't worry," Tyler says. "He looks like he could kill you, but he's really a big teddy bear." He walks over to the booth where a guy with short-cropped hair sits. "Slow John here does tech."
"Howdy, I'm Ben's best friend," he greets.
"And this is Schneider. He does merch." I look at the other guy sitting at the booth. He looks a lot like Tyler's brother, Jay.
"You probably won't see much of any of us," Schneider says. "We mainly work in the background setting up and whatnot. But it's nice to meet you!"
"You too," I reply, smiling. My brows furrow. "Where are we all going to sleep?" I ask, turning to Tyler. "We don't have eight beds..."
"Don't worry, the couch turns into a bed, and the booth table lowers into one, too. Since the concert isn't until Thursday, we'll get a hotel. But for tonight, we'll all sleep in here." He turns to the crew. "So, Jenna likes sleeping with the door closed, so if you get up to use the bathroom be sure to close it when you leave."
The guys nod. I smile.
"Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm gonna hit the hay," Josh says.
"Me too," I reply. "It was nice meeting all of you!" I smile at the crew before following Josh into the bunk area. I jump when I see Tyler right behind me.
"Hey," he says quietly. "So, I know you wanted to keep the door locked, but I totally forgot that the bathroom is in here, so if anybody has to get up to use it, they'd be kinda locked out and it would just be a complicated situation. But if it would make you feel better, you could swap bunks with me and sleep in the top bunk and I'll sleep in the bottom."
"Aw, thanks, I'd like that a lot." I squeeze his shoulder.
He grins. "Anything to help you feel safe. I'll move your nightlight up there."
"Do I need to move my stuff out from underneath your bunk?" I ask as he plugs my night light into my top bunk receptacle.
"No, you're good."
"Okay. Well, I'm gonna go change and brush my teeth." I grab my pajamas, toothbrush, and toothpaste and head to the bathroom.
Tyler is already settled into his bunk when I return. "Well, I guess this is goodnight."
He smiles. "Yep. Goodnight. Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs crawl into your ears and whisper threatning things that make you question yourself."
I giggle. "Ditto." I lean down and kiss him on the cheek before climbing into my bunk. It's nice because even with the overhead lights on, it's almost completely dark when I close my curtain. I flick my nightlight on and settle in, adjusting my pillow underneath my head. I close my eyes, anxious about what this tour will bring.
A/N: H-hey guys...it's been a while! Whoever is still reading probably hates me lol. I haven't updated in over a year, and then I just randomly decide to upload a chapter. I almost completely dropped this book, but then I thought a lot about it, read through some of The Treehouse and the previous chapters of this book, and decided I could still do stuff with it. Plus I don't have anything better to do in quarantine lol. I hope all of you are safe!
I actually started this chapter last year and didn't touch it again until like this past week, and now I've had a massive brain dump and that's why it's so long. Sorry about that.
And yes, I did get to go to one of their concerts!!! June 26, 2019 at Memphis was one of the best nights of my life. I had the privilege to go with a super awesome girl from my school, who just graduated today, and another guy in my grade. We got there around 1:00. We parked in the FedEx Forum's parking garage, which was attached to the venue. We didn't know where to go, so we decided to through a pair of double doors. That's when we saw vacant walk-through metal detectors and we realized that we were IN the concert Arena!!!! There were curtains that lead straight into the nosebleed sections AND YOU GUYS THEY WERE TESTING THE LIGHTS FOR BANDITO!!!!!!!!!! We all really had to use the bathroom, so we all walked down the hall and found those, used them quickly, then debated about if we were allowed to be in there or if we were totally breaking rules (the latter). There was a pair of elevators that you could only access with a security card, and all of us nearly had heart attacks when the doors opened to see a crew member step out and walk RIGHT PAST US without even glancing our way! It was so crazy!
Apparently, the boys started SOUNDCHECKING right after we left and went back outside, finding our way down to ground level. We could faintly hear them as we were walking around to the line. It kills me to know that we could've potentially listened to soundchecking, yet we would've been dead if a security guard had caught us lol.
They had a merch stand outside, but most of the stuff wasn't what I wanted and was very expensive lol. We went around to the pit line and there were already a lot of people there. It was rumored that people came as early as 5 am or even camped out, which is something you don't want to do in downtown Memphis!
We sat outside for like 4 hours, but it wasn't very hot and the building stayed shaded most of the time, thank goodness.
When we finally got in, we all had to use the bathroom again, and we were scared we were going to lose good spots and be stuck in the middle of the pit.
Well, when we finally got down to the floor, we were actually less than 20 feet away from the stage! It was hard to judge though because I'm short. I was on my toes most of the time.
Before the opening act, they had the lights on and screens throughout the arena displaying other artists coming in the future. Every once in a while, JoJo Siwa would pop up and everybody would start clapping and cheering out of pure sarcasm and dislike. It was beautiful. We confused the security guards lol.
Bear Hands was pretty good. They're not my usual band of choice, but they weren't bad. They only played for 30 minutes, which took me by surprise, but it was another 45 minutes before the boys came on.
During that spare time, I kept accidentally bumping a girl beside me, and we kept awkwardly apologizing to each other. After about the third time, I was like, "We should probably just talk to each other since we keep bumping into each other." So, we broke the ice and got to know each other. She came over from Missouri and actually went to their St. Louis show at the beginning of the tour. We both complained about being too short to see anything lol.
I was texting my boyfriend about how they have a burning car on stage when the lights shut out and an insanely deep bass note dropped. Then there was a flash of light just bright enough to see the curtain drop, then freaking JOSH DUN appeared with a torch in hand in his Bandito costume and everyone rushed forward to get as close as they could to the stage and I was like, "Oh my gosh they're real!!!!!!!" Then the car rose up out of the stage with Tyler standing on it and Jumpsuit started playing and it was so great!!!!
They played every song from Trench, plus Fairly Local, Stressed Out, Heathens, Car Radio, WDBWOTV, Lane Boy, Holding Onto You, Ride, Truce, and Trees.
So Truce was something special. I knew they had done it right after Car Radio as a karaoke at other concerts so the boys would not have to rush back onstage and have an awkward silence. They had VHS-aesthetic lyrics playing across the screen with a vulture and a sunset in the background. Everyone sang along and it was beautiful to know that everyone in that room had been touched by their music and came together to celebrate a night of being alive.
So, right after the first "Stay alive, stay alive for me", the girl right beside me, who I'd been talking to most of the night, screams, "You saved my life!" at the top of her lungs. Everyone cheered and she started crying and I hugged her and then I started crying (i was surprised I had gone that long without crying at that point). It was such a wonderful moment. It's so amazing that bands and music can do that! Then a clique mom hugged both of us and told us how proud she was and we cried for the rest of the song, but then we had to hurry and cheer up because the intro to Chlorine was starting to play. I see what the boys did there....they got everyone sad just to cheer us up right afterward because a lot of people were looking forward to Chlorine the most.
After Chlorine was Leave the City, and then after that Trees. I'm surprised I didn't cry during Trees, because that song has a lot of meaning for me.
And you guys, TYLER FREAKING JOSEPH GOT LESS THAN 10 FEET AWAY FROM ME ON HIS DRUM PLATFORM!!!!!!!!! IT WAS SO AMAZING!!!!!!! It didn't feel real!
The concert ended and I got pictures with my new fren and the frens I came with. Then I pulled a gallon ziploc out of my pocket and collected a ton of confetti from the floor lol. I almost lost my voice from singing/screaming so much. We went to the merch stand set up in the hall outside and I got a poster with the tour dates on it. I framed some of my confetti in it.
There was a wreck on the highway, so we had sat in traffic for like 30 minutes. It was after 11, and my boyfriend actually waited up for me and texted me to ask how it went, which was nice of him :3. We stopped at McDonalds at like midnight and ordered 40 chicken nuggets. I didn't get home until like 2 in the morning.
So yeah, that was the best night of my life! I can't stress how amazing it was! I hope all of you will have the chance to go to one!
If all of those details seem really specific after almost a year of going, I wrote about it in my journal and was referencing off of that lol.
Also, isn't baby Rosie just the cutest thing ever!?
I will try to update a lot more often now, lol. I'm so sorry about the wait!
Also it's 1 am and so half of this isn't edited. I'll probably publish it and edit it in the morning.
Until next chapter,
Rey
