Sad art isn't paintings and dark charcoal-looking sketches of people crying or looking seemingly depressed or frustrated. It is not simply sad because it lives in abandoned art museums in buried cities.

It is sad merely because the viewer's interpretation is sorrowful. 

The artist, as he was painting the brilliant mural, intended for the masterpiece to depict an untroubled girl striding along to her hopes and dreams, to depict her willing to take risks in order to get to where she was going; To reach her goals. 

Which was the exact same thing the artist was doing. In a way, the mural represented him. And like the girl, the mural was misunderstood by spectators. 

They saw it as a girl heading to darkness, heading down the wrong path, when in fact, she was going in the right direction. 

Interpretation is sad, but the artist will not spell out the art for the spectators. This situation is what makes art. The entire situation is a misunderstood masterpiece full of small misunderstood masterpieces full of even smaller perfect, understood masterpieces.

That is just the way despondent interpretation works.
