Chapter 28: Expect the Unexpected
It had been half an hour since Gray and Juvia wandered around the lake, and they weren't able to find Lucy. Gray began to feel worried. Even Lameria could not find her. The latter asked some of her trusted Kanians to go look for the mage.
"Where did you go, Lucy?"
The man had now conflictiing thoughts about his partner's whereabouts, he thought that, if Lucy's momentary disappearance had something to do with their mission, now would not be the right time for it. Meanwhile, the water-mage noticed the man beside her who seemed have a mind that drifted somewhere. She paused for a moment, letting him realize that his absent-mindedness did not go unnoticed by her.
"Is Gray-sama thinking about Lucy?"
This simple question had shocked the man a bit, although, such question may not mean anything else, as they are all friends after all. Besides, Fairy tail had already shared a deep bond that thinking of amorous thoughts at times such as now would be too foreign and inappropriate. Gray initially did not give out any response. He was careful on what would possibly come out from his mouth, though he knew that overthinking would be unnecessary. Not long after, Juvia broke the silence.
"We had been around this lake, trudging along these huge willow roots, as much as Juvia would want to find Lucy, she would also like to have some rest. Lucy is a strong woman, Juvia is positive that she's fine."
Juvia meant to share her sentiments as of the moment. She, then, recalled of Gray's advice. During those times when they were still together, there have been moments, which Gray told Juvia to avoid speaking her own name, especially when she wants to express herself. In that way, the person who would listen to her would take her feelings seriously. Then, it turned out to be quite effective when she tried it to each of her friends at the guild. Some of them were amazed of how Juvia had changed when she was with Gray. A change she found to be positive. However, up until today, she could not figure out why the man she fell in love with became detached.
"I'm sorry to drag you into this. But, you may go back to the clebration. You know the way, right?"
Juvia's thoughts were inexplicably in battle with Gray's reply. Is he really that worried? It's not like Lucy is truly in danger, is she?
"Ofcourse I'm worried about her too... It' s just that, you should have seen her trained, Gray-sama, that woman... I don't think she doesn't even know how to give-up. She's..."
"like a war machine?" Gray interrupted her, talking about their friend. He couldn't help being amused with the thought of members chatting about their co-members' peculiar bearing. It reminded him of themselves, as they used to hang-out back at the guild, and for a bit, it lighten his mood. Juvia felt relieved by it. She wanted to continue their conversation, as she saw it had released the atmosphere's tension.
"You've seen Lucy trained?"
"Tell me about it. I'm not surprised anymore thinking about that fire-breath when I see her trained. She became like a maniac." Gray chuckled a bit.
"Oh my goodness, that's what I thought the first time I witness one of her training sessions. Sheesh... Maybe the two are really meant for each other."
The last sentence made the ice-mage froze. He can hardly explain how he felt when Juvia mentioned the last part. It was like, he had heard the worst news of all time, or it was like, a boulder was surprisingly thrown out at him. It was utterly disturbing for him.
It took seconds for Juvia to make out the change in his mood, then she immediately stopped laughing.
"Is there something wrong? ..."
"Raven! Edzina..."
It was one of the Kanians who had searched for Lucy. He was instantly told by Lameria to inform Gray that they were able to find Lucy.
"What do you mean?" Gray had still difficulty in understanding Kanian language despite having stayed the island for a long time.
"Luna, Tuum... We found her, " said the man while catching his breath.
Upon hearing so, Gray's feeling become mitigated. He inhaled a breath and further inquired about his supposed missing partner.
"Where's she now?"
"Edzina came back to the celebration. You two can come back as well, Lameria commanded me to tell you so."
Inspite of their bewilderment, Gray and Juvia walked back to the area where the rest have gathered to celebrate.
"They call you Raven?" Juvia's curiosity matched her tone when she spoke.
"I am Raven, and Lucy's Luna. We have already been known by those names now. I can explain to you some time."
"No pressure on that matter.
I understand. But, what is Edzina? That guy kept on saying it."
"No idea, actually. But, I think that's what they always utter when he's talking to me about Lucy."
"Oh..."
Juvia was left on his own to ponder about what she just heard.
Back at the celebration, it was as if, everything was normal. Cana was now in her tenth bottle of Vintu, happily and carelessly chatting with the two Kanian men. Wendy was now playing with some Kanian children, and Levy was munching some food, while discussing something with Freed, who seemed to enjoy what he's been drinking. Lucy was even there, standing with Lameria, giving simple nods at a particular Kanian woman. She instantly, gave out an awkward smile, with a tint of red blush on her cheeks. Gray watched his friend from afar, curious of what she and her companions might have been conversing, and why the rest weren't bothered by Lucy's prior absence. Not long after, Lameria spotted him and signalled for him to come at their direction to which he complied. He excused himself from Juvia for a while before heading towards them.
"Raven, it turned out, Luna had been wandering around the grapewoods before she stopped at her cabin to take a nap." Lameria instituted. Nonetheless, Lameria's words sounded off. He did not believe her at all.
"Edzina is a bit tired, she said her stomach is churning, and her head is spinning. Liberi must be coming."
A Kanian woman, who among others know how to speak a certain language other than their own, excitedly whispered. Gray still found her words foreign to him. He didn't know how to react.
"She said, a baby might probably be coming. Lucy might be pregnant..." Lameria explained in a serious tone, not bothered by the two's reaction. Lucy's cheek had now shown major embarrassment, while Gray's ears were in heat, as he thought how lucky that Juvia was not in this conversation with them. After all, the last thing he needed was to stir up some issues between the two. These Kanian people are truly mastery of relationship issues. It was fortunate of them that only a few can speak Fioran language, or else, their friends would have already known by now their presumed marital status.
A few distance apart, Juvia was now looking heedfully at Gray and Lucy's table. She could not resist having qualms about the two. However, the thought that Lucy is still her friend reminded her inner self that she should not think something malicious about her. As with Gray, even though she and him were no longer together, she still strongly hope that there would still be a way for Gray to come back to her. But, she woud not know that, especially seeing the man so distant lately, there would be no other way but to wait. Her contemplation was suddenly interrupted by a friendly gesture. A Kanian lady gave her a glass of Vintu.
"A fine wine for a fine lady." The Kanian lady smiled. Out of all Kanians who could speak Fioran, she is the most fluent one.
"I am Itoria. The island's Vintu maker."
Juvia was pleased. She felt good talking to one of the locals, and loosen up a little.
"Sure, and Juvia, by the way."
Gajeel also went towards the two women upon hearing about the winemaker.
"I want another Vintu, as well." Itoria, glady poured another glass from her large bucket.
"Delicious, isn't it?"
"The finest I've tasted, haha...!" Gajeel had not noticed that he had been drinking more than 10 glasses already, yet, he was still a little conscious of his surroundings, and their conversation.
"Oh man, it's my fourth glass and I'm feeling drowsy." The water-mage started complaining.
"By the way, Itoria, is there any bunker here where we can sleep?" Gajeel asked.
"Ofcourse. We have cabins here. We already have set them all up for you guys." Itoria responded proudly.
"Oh, I thought I could just stay with Gray-sama." The water-mage made a drunken statement, surprising Itoria.
"Oh no, that's forbidden! Behave yourself, miss."
"What do you mean?" The other woman was a bit stunned by Itoria's conduct.
"Parejo... Noli esse cum viro parejo. You cannot be with a married man, let alone talking blatantly something about being with him. It's punishable here." Itoria sternly warned.
"Gray-sama, married? How's that possible and to whom?" Juvia's anxiety was already rising, while Gajeel began to break out in a cold sweat.
"He is no longer one man, you should stop thinking about a man already having Edzina, please Juvia, this is for you too. If Gyna and the rest would..."
"But, I didn't even know that Gray-sama had married!" Juvia was in a state of perplexity and vexation. Although, while anger began to build inside her, she was still a bit sluggish because of drunkenness.
"He married Luna, a few months ago. Luna... is the Edzina of Raven, his wife." Itoria revealed.
"Luna? I think I've heard someone calling that name, is she here? " Gajeel was now beyond comfort with what has been revealed. He was also being empathetic towards her friend, Juvia.
Why would Gray thought of marrying?
"Luna...? Edzina...?" In an instant, Juvia became nauseous. She knew the person whom she had to confront, and with a raging soul, she was heading to her direction.
"LUNA...!"
The blonde-mage startled when she saw the drunk and furious water-mage drawing near her. As soon as they were facing each other, Lucy's eyes met hers, as if she had been preparing for what Juvia was about to do or say.
"Or should I say, love-rival? Why am I not surprised?... Calling you that wasn't for nothing at all, isn't it?..."
Juvia coldly spoke. Her speech was slightly incoherent but her voice was too audible.
Silence was the only reaction she received from Lucy. Along with that, the indignant mage saw in Lucy's expression that she was unfaltered. This irritated her already chaotic heart.
"Answer me, you wench?!"
The rest of the gang hardly understood what has been unfolding before them.
"Juvia, stop this. I am sure there's an explanation why they did it."
Levy pleaded.
"Juvia, we will talk about this when you're sobber, please..." Gray tried to calm the woman.
"No, Gray, you just don't understand at all...Here I am, hoping to make things right with you but only to find out that you and her are already together!"
She pointed at Lucy like she had accused her of stealing her man. On the other hand, the celestial mage only watched the scene, trying to process the situation. Despite the firm look on her face, she could not deny the chaos that she felt inside.
"Lucy!!! Do you have something to say? Or you wann settle this in a different way?"
Then, after composing herself, she started to say something.
"Calm down Juvia, this is not what you think it is. Please, listen to me... Gray and I planned this..."
Thereafter, just like that, Lucy was knocked-off with a great punch by a gush of wind, aiming on her face.
It happened that Lameria was not pleased by what she witnessed. She was even more enragedly disappointed when Lucy was about to disclose something that was supposed to be confidential as of the moment. The reason why she gave her a blow on the face, yet she unintentionally overdid it. Lucy was knocked down. Everybody's jaw dropped.
