Dracotypes

Now we're getting to the fun stuff! Of course the Valdt has dragons, but there are also many relatives of dragons known as dracotypes that have similar traits but aren't dragons, such as sea serpents, basilisks, hydras, Hongalungs, wyverns, wyrms, and others. And there are plenty of interesting creatures that aren't even remotely related to dragons as well that still are very interesting.

The Last Bedazzilisk
The Last Bedazzilisk is a long serpentine creature guarding the magical fountain of Callipsym which holds the last truly pure waters in the Valdt. The water has extreme healing powers and its purity is why the Red Shadow seeks it out. The Last Bedazzilisk has gills that were sliced long ago by the Red Shadow's claws in an epic battle for the control over the waters. The Last Bedazzilisk is covered in scales like white opals and her eyes look like the starry sky. She is kind of heart and pure of soul like the waters she guards. Because of her slit gills, her breathing sounds like eerie and sorrowful music that is haunting and beautiful at the same time.

The Red Shadow
The Red Shadow was once one of the first dragons to walk the Valdt and his scales were once pure white. But he tainted the pure waters with the blood of another dragon, staining his scales forever red. Over the years he tried to take over the Valdt, until he was banished from physical existence. He is now a dracolitch and a master of darkness and evil, and although he cannot physically harm any creature, he can whisper seeds of evil into one's ear and manipulate an innocent soul into evil. He is the reason that evil and pain and suffering exist in the Valdt. He is known simply as the Red Shadow as a reminder of the blood he shed in the beginning of the Valdt and because he is merely a shadow of the beautiful dragon he once was. He can be banished for short periods of time, but because he is a disembodied soul of evil he cannot be killed.

Wyrms
Wyrms are so closely related to dragons that it is nearly impossible to tell them apart anatomically except that wyrms cannot fly and lack wings. Like dragons they can have anywhere from zero to eight limbs. Wyrms have the ability to breathe fire or other elemental breath weapons, and they come in many variations. Sometimes lung dragons can be mistaken as wyrms, but if a wyrm gets up and takes to the sky, even if it has no wings, it is a dragon. Wyrms do not get as big as dragons, but because they are anatomically identical, wyrms and dragons can crossbreed with ease although this rarely happens because dragons and wyrms often keep to their own kinds. Some variations of water dwelling wyrms have wing like flippers, but they cannot fly, unlike sea dragons.

Glass wyrm
The glass wyrm is so called for its ability to store sand in its large throat pouches and spew molten glass at its foes. They are native to deserts and beaches and they use their spines to regulate body temperature and store fat. Their skin can get hot enough to fry an egg on as they pump their hottest blood to the surface, but unlike their menacing appearance they actually eat cactus and sugarcane. The desert variety of this subspecies has a very armored inside of its mouth and an armored digestive tract, so stabbing one in the throat can't kill it.

Pine wyrm
This subspecies lives in the icy north and south and enjoys ambushing anything smaller than itself from under the snow. Pine wyrms smell like pine trees because pine nettles are their main diet year round.

Field Wyrm
The field wyrm is like an overgrown puppy or kitten, even as an adult. They are friendly creatures who enjoy rolling around in tall grasses and curling up with a good book. They are very intelligent and unlike other wyrms don't have qualms about forming a bond with other creatures like dragons do. Field wyrms cannot breathe fire but they do breathe a strong sleeping gas that can even work on paraglisps who are immune to almost all venoms and chemical weaponry of other creatures. Their diet includes grass and flowers and they are strict vegetarians unlike other wyrms who occasionally snack on meat.

Sea Wyrm
These nasty beasts are strict carnivores and reside in the murky depths of the sea. Classification of these creatures is difficult because their flippers resemble wings and yet they cannot fly.

Wyverns
Wyverns are very dragon like in appearance, yet their hide is soft and they do not breathe flames. They have only two legs and two wings and a tail ending in a venomous barb. Some wyverns can have up to five prongs on their tails but most have one or two. Wyverns make excellent guards as they are intelligent and have very keen senses. Wyverns lack the shiny luster dragons have in their scales and typically come in greens and browns, with male often having eyespots on their wings to ward off predators. Most wyverns don't grow over ten feet tall.

Hydra
Hydras are an oddity of The dracotype world because they can grow back two heads in place of every one head they loose, and each head has its own personality. Hydras start out with one head and up to two limbs, typically legs, and a long serpentine tail. When a head is severed the two that grow in its place have the intellect of a newborn baby. Hydras are very intelligent but many don't live long because they tend to argue with themselves once they have multiple heads. Hydras are so rare because all heads must agree on a mate. Hydra babies are adorable, so I'll show you all the drawing of a baby hydra, but I don't have any drawings of adults yet.

Sea serpents
Not much is known about these dwellers of the deep except that they get very big and occasionally surface to snack on boats. Baby sea serpents are born on land and must travel to the ocean in a similar plight to that of baby sea turtles.

Here's an adult sea serpent

Bone shredders
These illusive creatures are even less well known than sea serpents and many doubt that something that cunning and dangerous could exist. However when Manx ran away to the Harrow forest she not only saw some but befriended a young bone shredder.

Hongalung
These creatures are like lung dragons but they do not feed off of any physical thing. Instead they feed off of fear. They are like furry dragons in a way, beginning as tiny and innocent as kittens, but the more fear they feed on, the bigger and scarier they get and the more fear they need to feed on. Babies can eat physical food until they get a taste of their adult diet, and then their body rapidly grows. Manx found a baby Hongalung abandoned by its parents and tried to raise it, but soon the creature got out of hand and Manx had to release it. Remnant, as the creature was known, had babies of her own and there was hope for the species to continue, but someone murdered its young and framed Xolt for the deaths.

The picture below is of Remnant, who sadly was one of the last females of her kind. She died in the battle against Lyrica because of Xolt being framed for the death of her babies caused her to break into an unstoppable rage and she was killed by Xolt out of revenge for her causing the death of someone he cared about.

Basilisks and Cockatrices
These two are very similar creatures that both have toxic breath (talk about major halitosis) and the ability to turn other creatures to stone. Cockatrices are like a chicken and a dragon had a child that fell into a radioactive pit, and basilisks are like large lizards or snakes, some of both kinds growing up to eight legs or more as they age. Basilisks and cockatrices are especially two variations of the same creature that go by different names. The only thing that can kill one is its own reflection as they can regenerate extreme amounts of flesh and even organs. Their petrified victims can be restored if the monster is killed or a special cure is used. It would be fun to have one of these guarding my room from my obnoxious brothers because for once they would sit still and be quiet! Stone turned people are trapped in time and in the exact condition they were in when they froze. A basilisk or cockatrice's powers take a lot longer to work on a dragon as dragons are immune to most magic.

There are tons more dracotypes out there but I've run out of room here and I don't have many more drawings of dracotypes.
