03 || the first mission

"IT'S A CHANCE TO GET OUTTA THIS HELLSCAPE. HOW COULD WE NOT SAY YES?"
STAR KILLER BASE, FIRST ORDER-
Kyra paused for a moment, seeing Ren's outstretched hand, the small device inside almost tempting her. The First Order signia was branded into it, a dull, lustless shine coming from the black drive. It seemed like nothing at first, but for Kyra, it meant so much more than a mission for the First Order.
This was a chance at freedom.
An opportunity to escape.
And Kyra was going to take that opportunity, without hesitation.
Carefully taking the drive from the man's gloved hand, Kyra stared up at the masked Ren, her small stature hiding within the shadows of his looming one. "What catch is there to this?" She gripped the drive carefully, having some sort of feeling that there was a catch to it.
"There is none." Kylo Ren bluntly spoke, not answering any questions more than that. "We simply desire you to complete the task that is required on the drive. The Supreme Leader believes your experience in the battlefield is more than enough to complete the task at hand."
"And what does your Supreme Leader want with me?" Kyra tried to disguise her sneer within her voice at the fact that she was being called upon by a "higher order" within the First Order, one that had commanded she be taken in and trained this way in the first place.
"He believes you have the power and strength to become someone of great power in the First Order." Was all the man simply answered, turning to look down upon her. "Now that you have your questions out of the way, are you ready to be briefed on this mission?"
Kyra gave the man a hesitant nod, earning a smile from underneath the man's mask. "Good. Follow me." He whirled around from where he stood in the hallway, walking towards the windowed part of the Star Killer Base. Technology littered the area in front of the window, one of the machines something that Kyra immediately identified as a hologram projector.
Walking up to the machine, the girl saw Kylo wait for her expectantly to plug the drive in, which she did in an orderly manner, stepping back to see the hologram flicker to life. The blue outline of the base was shown first.
"This, as you might remember, is our Star Killer base that we are currently building. By now you must know about all of the rumors that have come about why our project has been in such deep delay for such an amount of time." Gesturing to move the hologram, on to whatever next was projected, the blue outline of the base disappeared.
"On one of the last recovery missions for new parts that we needed, some Resistance and Republic fighters were able to get a hold of the supplies before we did. Now, as you may assume, that put our plans on delay again. To get a part like that crafted again... it would take months."
A hologram soon displayed the part that they needed, what seemed like an important energy source to help supply something in the Star Killer base that had been under work for some time- the Thermal Oscillator.
"We've received word from one of our informants on the ground that the Resistance plans to take it to an Outer Rim trading post located on the planet of Batuu. Your task would be to intercept whichever Resistance member has come onto the planet, and get the part that will help the Star Killer base advance in the construction, so the weapon can be completed."
The hologram quickly transitioned to the planet of Batuu, the trading outpost called Black Spire Outpost, zooming into the buildings inside. Hologram people seemed to stroll through the outpost, the place rather busy for somewhere on the Outer Rim.
"The goal is to get as little civilians involved as possible. We don't want to draw any attention to ourselves. The job should be quick and clean, and if there is any more fear for the First Order than there already is, the Resistance will only gain in power."
Kyra almost wanted to scoff at the man's statement. Unneeded attention? Walking into an outpost with Stormtroopers and a First Order insignia was anything but inconspicuous. And the man was acting as if the First Order wasn't already feared across the galaxy.
Waving his hand again, Kylo Ren dismissed the hologram, staring out into the stars. "It's imperative that you ensure that this mission gets completed. The Star Killer base cannot take any more delays to the construction, otherwise we will never get to Skywalker before the Resistance."
"Skywalker?" Kyra murmured, wondering why the myth about the last Jedi Knight would have anything to do with the conquest of the galaxy and the regime of the First Order. "What does he have to do with the First Order's agenda?"
"If we get Skywalker, we ensure that no one will stop our conquest of the galaxy." Ren stated as if it was obvious. "And once we conquer the galaxy, the Supreme Leader can start his plans, and whatever part we play in them. We'll have power over the galaxy like no one has seen."
"Of course." Kyra nodded, deciding that it would be better to not ask any more questions of the man. The more she heard about the reasons why she had to do the mission, the more it seemed less and less appealing to her.
"Is there anything that you're going to need for this mission? I will ensure that you get the supplies that you are required, within a reasonable range."
"Some blasters and knives would be preferable in terms of weapons." Kyra considered, not trying to consider what was going to come out of the mission. She would be a blank slate while completing the task. She wouldn't think about all of the horrible things that she would have to do with the weapons that she was receiving. "In terms of clothing-"
"Deftrine has engineered a mission suit that would be desirable for your tasks. It will have communication directly back to us built into the attire, and, if needed, will have the power to now inhibit your powers. The Doctor has told me some very interesting news in regards to that today, and if you try to rebel-"
The man didn't have to finish the statement. Kyra knew what would happen to her. Her mind would be ripped to shreds by Ren, the Force being able to ruin her life for once in her life. Even now, the girl had no idea to what extent her powers protected her from the mystical Force, but she knew that if the First Order had figured out a way to override her power and shut it down- it meant that she could be more easily influenced to do more awful things for the First Order.
There was a catch to this newfound freedom, so it seemed. Instead of being kept on a loose leash, they had traded it for a longer and tighter one. All cruel analogies aside, Kyra wasn't sure if this newfound freedom actually was, well, freedom.
But it was her best shot.
"I understand." Kyra monotonously responded, walking up to grab the drive from the hologram machine. "However, I would like to request that whoever is overseeing my mission be by my choice. I trust most people here about as far as I can throw them." She muttered the last sentence underneath her breath, hoping that Ren didn't hear what she had said.
"Fine."
"Also two pairs of civilian clothes for my partners I will be taking. Just a simple jacket will do for me. Sir." Kyra hastily added, seeing the impatience slowly rise up inside of Ren. "Otherwise, I'm ready to complete the mission whenever it is required."
Earning no other comment from Ren, Kyra turned to walk away towards where she had come from, ringing the elevator shaft where she knew 4236 and 6978 would be waiting. Kyra tapped her foot softly on the floor, not wanting to look back at where she had been standing, although she couldn't help but give a glance back.
When she did, Kylo Ren was staring straight at her.
Breath hitching in fear, Kyra turned her eyes back to the elevator in front of her, silently letting out an exhale of relief when it arrived. Seeing the two trooper escorts inside, she smoothly stepped in, waiting for the doors to close before she spoke again.
This time with the two troopers, there were no handcuffs, no guns raised. On the contrary, the two looked rather pleased to see that Kyra was still alive. Well, if their expressions could be seen through their masks.
"What did he want from you, Princess?"
Holding up the black device with a small smile, Kyra waved it in front of 4236's face. "He wanted to give me a mission. And a mission means that there's hope. No more being confined to this hellish place all the time-"
"And no more of those experiments with that creepy doctor." 6978 finsihed, already seeing the look of joy hidden within Kyra's face. "Gotta say, Kai, it hurts me a little bit. Does it mean you're leaving us behind?"
Pressing the button to go back to the main floor, where Kyra assumed that she'd find her mission suit and weapons waiting for her inside of her quarters. "On the contrary, you two are coming with me." Tucking the drive into her pants pocket, Kyra felt the elevator drop, the doors shuddering open to reveal the floor of the Star Killer base that she was familiar with.
"So, boys, are you ready to start helping me cause some trouble?"
When she got two small nods, Kyra smirked, turning her head towards the hallway, walking in front of the two troopers. She knew she wasn't in charge of them, rather, it was the opposite, but she knew she had to fill them in on what was going on.
"Which one of you can pilot a ship?" When Kyra's eyes fell upon 4236, who had his hand slightly raised, she wasn't surprised. He seemed like the pilot type. "Great. We're going to be taking one of the more inconspicuous ships down to the planet that the mission is on. Ren said that he doesn't want any attention drawn to us if it isn't needed."
"Won't we draw attention to ourselves regardless in our uniforms?"
"That's why I'm gathering civilian clothes for you two. You'll be able to walk with me inconspicuously. And I get to see your lovely mugs for once in my life." She snarkily added, finding her quarters as she turned down the halls, rapping in the code quickly.
The door slid open with a silent whoosh, Kyra seeing that the clothes, blasters, and knives she had requested were already inside. The clothes were folded up neatly on her cot, blasters and knives hanging on a newly installed weapons rack.
While she might hate the First Order for keeping her captive, Kyra had to admit, they made quick work of things.
"Hate to be the party pooper here, but isn't that against the Stormtrooper code?" 6978 asked Kyra, seeing her pick up the two men's clothes, separating them before shoving them into their hands. "I don't think Phasma is going to be very happy about it."
"Then change on the ship. 4236'll teach me how to be a good co-pilot and keep the ship on course for the planet that we're heading too, and you two can change there as to not suffer the consequence of Phasma's punishment. Plus, I got these orders straight from Ren. I don't think Phasma will want to defy him." Kyra turned her head to see her mission suit hanging upon the wall, leather jacket she had requested right by its side.
Looking at the mission suit, and then at the two men who were inside her room, Kyra cleared her throat awkwardly. Eyes darting between the suit and the men, she arched an eyebrow. "So are you guys going to let me get changed or-"
"Right." 4236 seemed to be embarrassed, whacking his partner as an indication that they were supposed to be leaving. "Do the usual code when you're ready, Princess. Then we'll be on our way, assuming Ren wants this done as fast as possible."
"That'd be correct." Kyra muttered under her breath when the door slid shut again, giving a sigh as she took the mission suit from where it was hanging with her weapons on the weapon rack. The suit looked tight, made of some blaster proof material and stuck to her body shape. Which, of course, wasn't flattering to any woman.
Slipping on the suit took a little while longer than her normal clothes, Kyra giving a groan of relief once she had it on. Zipping up the top half, she grabbed the weapons belt from off the rack that had been tucked away underneath the suit, tightening it around her waist until it didn't slip. Placing her two blasters into their desired position, Kyra carefully inspected the three knives that were given to her.
They were the exact same knives she used when she was young, the familiar glossy black handles intertwined with some sort of sea glass that was common from a planet she had not heard of where they had been purchased. Tracing the outline of the sea glass for a moment, Kyra twirled the last knife she had left to put away, securing it with a small click.
Rapping on the door twice for the second time that day, Kyra saw the two Stormtroopers waiting outside for her expectantly. 6978 seemed to be checking an invisible watch, staring up at her once she walked through the doorway. "Took you long enough."
"Oh, shut up." She jostled the trooper, starting to walk towards the loading bay that she knew was on this level. "It's not like this thing was very easy to get into. It's skin tight." Kyra griped, looking back at 4236 and 6978 for a moment.
"How awful for you." She heard 4236 tease, the girl just rolling her eyes at the two of them. Giving a small glare and the quickest flip of the bird ever, Kyra walked up to the hangar door, punching in a code. The doors opened, and inside was a small hangar bay with some of the more inconspicuous ships of the First Order.
"Which one do we take?"
"Whichever one you can fly, 4236." Kyra fired back, looking at the options. "It's up to you." There were about five different spaceships inside of the hangar, three more medium sized ones and two smaller ones.
"The one on the far right. That's the Tartan II-Class Patrol Cruiser. Many of them went up on the Black Market after the Empire fell, so a lot of smugglers and traders have them. And, lucky for us, its manuals are pretty easy to learn." 4236 pointed at the ship, starting the walk towards it.
"Great." Kyra smiled, following his lead towards the smaller patrol cruiser ship. "That's just what we want. Something small and common." Walking over to the ship, Kyra could see that it wasn't in the best of shape. It had been battered, carbon scoring from a battle obvious on the top of the ship.
"Think she'll do 4236?" 6978 asked his partner, who then lowered the ship's walkway, seeing the inside still pristinely kept. "She looks a little rough around the edges."
"It'll hold up." The trooper dismissed, walking inside and giving an almost sigh of satisfaction. "It's been a while since I've gotten to fly. I miss it." Running his hand along the walls of the ship, he waited for 6978 to walk into the ship, finding the control panel and raising the walkway back up.
"Alright. Now that we're alone and not under the watchful eye of our friends from the First Order, let's get a move on." Rubbing her hands together in excitement, Kyra followed 4236 into the cockpit of the plane, 6978 opting to stay towards the back of the ship, announcing he was going to change into civilian clothing.
4236 sat in the pilot's seat, Kyra settling into the co-pilot while 6978 started to change. The girl watched in amazement as the man turned on the ship, the spaceship slowly roaring to life underneath them, the ignition slowly starting as he pressed one final button.
"I'm going to need you to watch these buttons on the side." He pointed to the right hand side of her area of the cockpit. "If any of those buttons start flashing, do not hesitate to start pressing them." 4236 gave a sigh of satisfaction as he watched Kyra look over at the panel, squeezing his trooper mask off and throwing it on the ground.
When Kira looked back at 4236, she was met with eye contact. It was strange, putting a face to the voice that she had known for so long. "Oh. So we're really getting acquainted with each other." She seemed embarrassed that she had been staring at him for too long, opting to stare out of the window.
"Nothing too personal, Princess." 4236 laughed at her, starting to pilot the plane out of the hangar bay. "While 6978 might be a little older and wiser, and just a little bit more scared of Captain Phasma, I'm not. Plus, I can see better without that damn thing on."
Exiting the Star Destroyer base inside of the spaceship took no time at all, the stars greeting the three as 6978 walked into the cockpit to greet the two, now freshly dressed in his civilian clothing. "I have to say, this is mildly uncomfortable for me, Kai."
"Course it is, old man." 4236 looked back at 6978, prompting Kyra to do the same. 4236 was right about one thing, 6978 was a little older than the other trooper. He seemed a tad smarter about his decisions too.
"Kai." 6978 dipped his head in hello to the girl, his eyes meeting hers for a split second. "Nice to finally meet you, kid. Hate to skip the pleasantries, but can we get going? I'm sure that we don't have all the time in the world. Where are we heading Kai?"
"Outer Rim. Some planet called Batuu. We're headed to the Black Spire Outpost." Kyra answered 6978's question, sort of thrown off guard by seeing the two trooper's faces for the first time. She knew what she had been getting into by asking them to take them off, sure, but she didn't realize that it made them a lot more friendly and their personalities a lot more prominent than how they were under the mask.
"Putting in the coordinates now." 4236 responded, pushing another few buttons before pointing to a stick on the co-pilot side. "I'm going to need you to pull that lever down in a few moments, once we get clear of all of these ships. It'll launch us all into Hyperdrive."
Kyra gave a small nod, her left hand grasping the Hyperdrive stick, her eyes focused on all of the stars and ships in front of her. "I can do that." She replied back to the trooper, who gave a good laugh and a smile.
"Good." 4236 navigated clear of all of the ships, looking over at Kyra for a moment after he had made sure that he was clear of all of the asteroids around the Star Destroyer base and the ships that would go in and out of the base.
"Punch it, Princess."
The three launched into Hyperdrive.
