I didn’t sleep a wink that night.
Thoughts just replayed back and forth in my mind. I thought about how pissed off Dill and Lauren are now, how I had already gotten revenge on Sean but yet we’re still continuing with this ‘relationship’, and about the many times that Jace and I had almost kissed for real. But the biggest thing that kept me up was the words that Kayla told me. What does she mean? Was she just playing with my head like she always does?
Maybe she’s smarter than I give her credit for…
The next morning I let Jace drive me to school—Dillon left an hour before school even started probably in an effort not to talk to me—and while we walked down the hallways hand-in-hand, no one looked at us weird which meant that the whole fake relationship thing is still going strong.
“Is anything different back home?” Jace asked me as we passed some giggling freshman that were talking about some television show.
“No… Dillon won’t even look at me now. Is it really that bad that all of this is,” I looked around then spoke under my breath when I knew that no one was listening in on our conversation. “Fake?”
Jace nodded. “We’re talking about the guy who went on the intercom and basically banned all guys from even talking to you last year because of Sean. Remember how pissed off he was when we told him we were ‘dating?’ I think most of the anger is from what I said to him to allow us to date.”
I recall the two of them having a conversation then Dillon coming in and saying it was okay much to my surprise though I was never told what was said in there. “What did you say?”
He cleared his throat and pulled us down to a bench where we could sit at but still talk in at least a little privacy. “I told him how I liked you for years and thought I lost my chance when you and Sean started going out. I said how I’d never want to hurt you because I was just happy that you were in my arms now and how he shouldn’t split us up.”
I was stunned for a moment at his words because they sounded so sincere. “Good lie,” I breathed out and he just nodded.
“You can see why he’s super mad now, right?”
“Yeah… I honestly thought that since he’s just super protective, he hated not knowing the truth about us.”
“That’s probably a part of it but I think it’s mostly because we lied straight to his face when he thought that we were going to get married and have children,” He laughed but it was humorless.
I want to ask him about Kayla. This moment will be perfect because neither of us was talking at the moment and I seriously wanted to know. But what if it’s not my business? Kayla might think it is but I’m hardly the one to dig into people’s person lives especially when they didn’t bring you into them. Or like I said before, what if she’s just messing with me?
I opened my mouth to start talking but Jace beat me to the punch. “Hey, what are you doing this weekend?”
I cocked an eyebrow up in confusion. “Probably rehearsing with Sean again, why?”
He looked down and gave me a sheepish smile. “My mom wants to see you again. She’s in love with you.”
A smile rose onto my face, “Okay. I’ll just change practice to another day.”
The warning bell went off which signaled to us that we only had five minutes before school officially started. I got up and Jace grabbed my bag from me then intertwined our fingers together.
“Let’s go someplace special for lunch.”
I grinned, “Okay.”
We walked down the hall to my first class and I saw Sean in a seat in the front, looking straight at us. I bit my lip a little then turned to Jace to gently press my lips to his.
“You’ll get an STD for being too intimate, you know that right?” I pulled away to look at a hurt Lauren. “Oh wait… You aren’t intimate.” She whispered the next sentence, “You’re just lying to everyone and unfortunately everybody believes it.”
I watched as she stalked into the room with her head down. I looked at Jace who just gave me a sad look then squeezed my hand as a goodbye. Taking a deep breath, I walked into the classroom and took a seat by Lauren and Molly. Of course I didn’t sit directly by my best friend because that wouldn’t suit her fancy.
Homeroom went by slowly. Poor Molly… She obviously knew that there was some tension between Lauren and I but tried her best to make it less awkward than this whole things really was. She tried talking about things that all three of us liked but when no one pitched in anything, she went on talking about nothing in particular and basically had a conversation to herself.
As soon as the bell rang, I practically ran out of the room and saw Jace exiting the room next door. He walked over to me and engulfed me in a hug even though it’s been thirty minutes since we last saw each other. I guess we’re still having the act be up even though our best friends know the truth and can spill it at any moment.
“How was it?” He asked.
“Horrible,” I sighed. “I wish everything was fine…”
He pulled back and tilted my chin up so I was looking into his light eyes that I loved. “Just give them time. Hopefully everything will turn out better later on but in the meantime, at least me have each other.”
I smiled at his attempt to give me advice that’ll make me feel better but I still felt like a piece of crap for lying to both of them. The next few classes were horrible as well because all except one I had with either Lauren or Dillon. My brother was definitely angrier than Lauren but she’s more hurt by the lies than Dillon. By the time lunch came around, Jace was dragging me to his car while I toppled behind.
“Are we even allowed to leave campus?” I asked while he opened my door for me.
“Nope but we’re going to anyways. We deserve to do something fun for once,” He gave me a smile then ran to his side before jumping in and peeling out of the school’s parking lot.
We traveled in silence until we reached a fast-food joint and I laughed. “McDonalds?” I smiled. “I halfway expected some huge restaurant because you said ‘someplace special.’”
“We can if you want—“
“No, it’s perfect.”
We ordered then sat in a booth near the back because there was an old couple glaring at us probably because they thought we were skipping school even though we planned to go back.
“Why do you think Lauren’s so mad?” Jace asked me while in the middle of a huge bite of his burger.
I looked down and slipped a fry into my mouth before talking. “We promised to tell each other everything and I know for a fact that she’s kept that up. I lied to her about too many things and she knows it.”
“Like what?”
“Well… She knows for a fact that I lied about our ‘relationship’ and I didn’t tell her about losing my virginity to Sean. I didn’t want to tell anyone about that even thought I know I could trust Lauren. I was just too embarrassed and ashamed after he cheated on me to talk about it.”
“Wait, he had sex with you then cheated on you?”
I nodded, “I caught him the next day.”
Jace slammed his fist on the table and I saw his face getting madder by the second. “That asshole…”
I nodded then let out a humorless laugh. “I know. It’s story of my life. She also knows about my scars from the fire but I don’t want to talk about it so I just said that I was hit by a car when I was younger but she knows that I’m a horrible liar.”
“So the whole ‘fake relationship’ thing was the last straw to her?” I nodded. “Damn, that sucks.”
“I know… Now what I don’t understand is why she was kissing Dillon. Do you think they’re going out?”
Jace shook his head. “No, I don’t think so. I honestly just think that it was a one-time thing. I can’t see Dillon liking a girl like Lauren, no offense but she’s too smart for him.”
I laughed and he smiled at me. “Thanks Jace, you’re a good listener.”
He flicked my nose, “As are you.”
The rest of lunch was a quiet ordeal then he drove both of us back to school to finish off the day. He gave me a kiss on the cheek in front of my classroom then left. English had to be the worst since I’m with Dillon, Lauren, and Sean plus we’re doing Romeo and Juliet stuff.
“Should we practice?” Sean asked when Ms. Sunday asked us to get with our partners.
“No, that’s for when we’re alone. I don’t want to give anyone the wrong impression. Plus I can’t rehearse this weekend anymore, can we do it tomorrow or something?”
His eyebrows furrowed together. “Why?”
I sighed because it’s not his business but I know it’ll make his jealous if I tell him the truth. But what’s the point anymore? Jace and I are going to ‘break it off’ in only a few weeks but still, I continue. “I’m going over to Jace’s house to visit with his mom.”
I saw him swallow then clench his hand in his lap. “Isn’t school work more important than that?”
I shook my head. “His mom is amazing and apparently she’s begging me to come over so I’m going to.”
“But what about—“
“Sean! I’m going over no matter what happens so don’t try to get me to change my mind because it won’t work. We broke up. You know what that means? It means you don’t have any control over me so just get over it! It’s done.”
His lips pursed and I saw the pair next to us look at us like this was a movie or something. “I know but—“
“But nothing. End of story.”
I rolled my eyes and we just sat in silence until the period was over. The other classes went by around the same time and soon it was time for dance. I changed into my usual attire and walked out to the field where Marissa called me off to the side.
“Do you know what song you’re going to do for your solo?” She asked me.
I nodded. “Probably Stereo Hearts by Gym Class Heroes. Does that sound okay to you?”
A smile came onto her face, “That’ll be perfect for you. I can’t wait to see it, let me know when you have your routine done, okay?”
“Sure!” I grinned then went back to where Chase and I finished up our routine that is actually pretty amazing. I’m pretty sure that everyone will like it. The Hillcrest Dance Bash is in only a few weeks and we have a lot of routines plus wardrobe issues to go over. In the past this has made a lot of money for the school and almost everyone shows up to see us all dance. The idea made me nervous but also excited.
Practice went longer than usual and when we got out, both the soccer players and the cheerleaders were already done. I went back into the school to look for Jace who promised to give me a ride home but fell flat when I couldn’t find him by his car or by the locker room.
I sighed and situated my bag’s strap that was on my shoulder and walked down the empty hallways hoping to maybe find him on the way out. I could’ve called him but my phone was out of battery.
“How long is this going to continue without any of the results that I wanted? That I hoped for?” I stopped when I heard Kayla’s screeching voice echo down the hallway. I froze in place and stepped into an open janitors closet to listen without anyone blowing my cover. My eyes widened as I heard Jace reply back to her.
“I’m sorry, there are only a few more weeks—“
“I want it to happen soon! I also want to be there when it happens just to see her face.”
I heard a sigh and I figured that it came from Jace. “I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Laughter boomed now and I knew it was Kayla. “You kind of have to or it all come back to me. Come on, Jace. I told you that I could pay you some other way—“
“No, Kayla! Man, what happened to you? Why are you such a bitch now?”
I peeked out of the corner of the door and barely saw the pair talking. To my surprise, Kayla’s head was looking down at the ground and a sad look was on her face. “You know why…”
“I’m sorry… It’s just that I wish we could do this without hurting—“
A shriek escaped my mouth when I felt something crawling up my leg. On instinct, I stepped out into the light and shook the spider off of it with another scream. Once I killed it, I realized that I just exposed myself.
“Peyton?” Jace’s eyes widened and a sly smile went on Kayla’s face.
Despite my embarrassing entry, I crossed my arms over my chest and put on my ‘this means business’ face.
“Tell me what’s going on.”
