“Peyton! Just hold still for a few moments longer!”

I huffed and crossed my arms over the dress that I bought only a few days ago. Cara was currently putting the last few touches on my makeup while I knew Jace was downstairs waiting for me. My hair was already done but she wouldn’t let me view myself whatsoever.

“There!” She grinned and stepped back. “You look amazing.”

I started to turn around to look in the mirror but she spun me back. “I can’t even look at myself now?”

“Nope!” She laughed and pulled me up to straighten out my dress. From there she took my hand and brought me out of my room, waiting by the staircase.

I looked down, unseen of course, and noticed Jace talking to Dillon. They both wore suits and my ‘boyfriend’ looked hot already even though I can only see the top of his head.

“I can’t do this!” I whispered to Cara. “Why don’t we just call this off and we’ll stay home watching bad television!”

“No! I did not just spend hours on you to have you waste it. Now walk down the staircase with class and look like the extremely gorgeous girl you are!”

I blushed as she pushed me forward almost making me fall in his heels that she made me wear. Those are definitely coming off for the dance we had to do there. The boys looked up at the noise and I turned even happier as their eyes widened.

“It’s too much, right?” I asked as I continued walking slowly and carefully down while Cara skipped away.

“No… It’s perfect.” Jace flashed me his one thousand watt smile and I grinned back in return.

“Wow, my sister looks like a woman.” Dillon smiled at me and bowed when I finally made it down those horrible stairs. “My lady?”

I laughed and went closer to Jace, “I don’t support incest.” I winked as Jace wrapped his arms around me.

Cara took some pictures of us quickly before Dillon set out to get Alyssa, his date to my pleasant surprise. After that, my fake boyfriend’s sister sent us off to the restaurant that he wanted me to go to. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror before we left and I smiled at how I looked.

My red hair was in soft waves down my back and it went well with the dress that I wore. I had on some silver heels that went with the top of my clothing. My makeup made my eyes pop and my nails were matching my heels. Overall, I’d say I looked pretty good.

He brought me to his car and opened the door for me. I pushed him playfully but went in regardless before we were off for some food.

“If you want to leave early, just tell me.”

I played with the corsage that he got me. I smiled at Jace and loved that the tie that he wore matched my dress perfectly.

“I said I’m fine,” I laughed and we pulled into a very nice place where I’ve only eaten once courtesy of my parents. He got out and opened my door while a smile. As soon as he shut the door, his hand connected with mine even though we were in the dark where no one could see us.

We walked into the restaurant and the server stares at us immediately, “Are you with the Hillcrest high school group?” She asked and we both nodded. “Follow me please.”

Dinner was fun then after we headed out to the dance at our school. It was being held in the cafeteria, the biggest open space inside that was on campus, and it was completely decked out for the event. Jace handed the principle our tickets and he let us go inside along with the rest of our group.

Inside there were teenagers grinding all around and some people were just throwing their hands up to the fast music that the DJ was playing. Jace wrapped his arm around my waist as all his friends went in opposite directions. Alyssa gave me a look then pointed to the clock. I understood what she meant and the DJ should already know what to do when the time came.

“Hot damn,” I muttered as we passed some girl that was dry humping a guy but it was supposed to be called ‘dancing.’

Jace laughed, “That could be you and me if you want it.”

I raised an eyebrow, “You really think that Dill would let that pass?”

He looked at me with a sly smile, “He’d be too jealous.”

“Of me…” I muttered, thinking out their little bromance. I sly smile crossed my face when I looked up at a confused Jace.

            “Wanna dance?” He asked.

I looked at the clock, only a half hour until our dance starts. “Sure,” I said and he led me out onto the dance floor.

“Hey, look.” Jace nodded over to the side of the room where all the people without dates were standing, “It’s Sean.”

Sure enough, my ex boyfriend was standing alone and was staring at us. I rolled my eyes and pressed my body closer to Jace’s. I snuck another look over there and saw Kayla now talking to him, her dress being so short that you could see her ass.

“Ignore them, lets make them jealous.” Jace smile and I smiled back. I felt a tap on my shoulder and I saw Alyssa looking back at me with a confused Dillon by her.

“Ready for this? It starts when this song ends!”

My eyes widened. Was I ready for humiliation? Nope, not at all.

I pulled away from Jace and he gave Dillon a confused look that just shrugged back.

The song My First Kiss came on and the boys from the dance team stepped out into the middle of the dance floor. No one noticed anything wrong as Sean’s voice from 3OH!3 echoed through the cafeteria.

That was, until they ripped off their suits.

All the females on the team were by Alyssa and I. She turned around, “Ready girls?” She counted under her breath, “Now.”

Ke$ha’s voice came on and we strutted to where our guys were. People were now lined up all around the room leaving a huge space for us to do our routine. I went between Chase and Bradley from where every guy was lined up with a space between waiting for one of us to occupy that spot. Chase smirked at me then at the part when the kissing sound came on he grabbed the side of my dress and ripped it off.

I had put ‘adjustments’ on my dress by taking out the side and putting Velcro on it. It still felt and looked the same. It’s just a flyaway dress now.

Underneath I had the dance teams uniform on along with the rest of the girls. Sadly, it showed off a bit of my stomach along with everyone else. Remember when I said this was a little bit… hot?

The girls stepped forward from the line and moved their hips to one side then the other. After a few moments, the guys came forward and faced their bodies to their right. At the next beat, they turned their heads around and gave the girl behind them a wink. I almost laughed as Chase rolled his eyes at me, he’s a senior and also one of the straight guys.

The dance continued and all the guys went to the side at one point. The girls got into a line, facing the crowd. Alyssa had chosen me to be in front for this because ‘I was the most qualified for the job.’ Behind me I knew that the girls were putting their hands to the side then up making it look like I was moving a million arms. Two hands crossed my chest and my stomach then I winked at the crowd. It basically looked like I was some sort of pimp right there…

I stepped forward, spread my legs out and blew a kiss to the crowd, moving my hips along with me.

I noticed Jace in the crowd and he looked very surprised at me doing this dance. To mostly everyone at this school, they knew me as little innocent Peyton, sister to Dillon Brandt. Doing this dance probably changed everyone’s mind about me.

I smirked at Sean who looked like he was going to start drooling right there as the girls popped their hips out.

Near the end of the song there were more spreading our legs, popping our hips, and shaking our asses. I’m really starting to question Alyssa’s choreography.

At the last few beats, the guys stayed back while the girls stepped forward the turned at the last moment, blowing a kiss to the crowd then slapping their butt.

The people watching starting cheering and the guys hooted for more. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my dress off the ground then started to put it on but a hand caught mine.

“That was hot,” Jace breathed while I pushed the Velcro together. I smiled and took his outstretched hand out to the dance floor.

The rest of the night I spent dancing with Jace, Alyssa, Lauren, Molly, Dillon, and even Luke. I promised Jace the last dance so when there was only a few songs left, I went to go look for him. I didn’t find him in the cafeteria so I started to go look throughout the school.

“Peyton!” I turned around when someone grabbed my arm then scowled.

            “Get away from me, Sean.”

“Can we just have one dance? It’s not like it’ll mean anything,” He said but I knew he was lying.

“Why? We’d probably have to stop because you would’ve punched me.”

He sighed, “I’m sorry about that! It was an accident, I’ve told you that a million times already. That was just one little thing…”

My eyes widened at his words, “Should we do a whole list? You cheated on me, punched me, punched my boyfriend, exposed my secret, took my virginity, made me waste an entire summer, and made me hate blonde hair.” Every time I said something new, I put up a finger.

            “You hate blonde hair now?”

I rolled my eyes, “Goodbye Sean.”

I left Sean all alone and walked down the hallway that went to the gym. Some students were talking and I even saw a couple breaking up. I ignored them all and continued on my mission.

“I don’t know, Kayla.” I froze and pressed myself against the wall. I sneakily peaked around the corner to see Jace talking with Kayla.

“Come on, I’ll kiss you for it!”

I stiffened, was Kayla taking Jace from me too?

“No! You know that I would never do that… Look, we’ll talk later, I need to get back to the dance.”

I heard footsteps so I ran back to the cafeteria nearly falling over my heels. What was that about? He rejected Kayla so he wasn’t ‘cheating’ on me…

“Peyton!” I flinched as a hand touched my shoulder, spinning me around. Jace gave me a breathtaking smile, “Can I have that last dance?”

I nodded without a word and let him take me out onto the dance floor. The DJ put a slow song on so I wrapped my arms around his neck while his went around my waist.

            “Are you okay?” He asked.

“Yeah,” I lied. My mind was going crazy about the exchange between him and Kayla. What was her questioning? Why were they even talking?

“I know that you’re not but I’m not going to question it because you don’t seem like you want to talk about it,” He smiled down at me and I noticed Sean looking at us sadly from the wall.

I still hated him. I don’t think that I’ll ever like him after what he did again. He had bruises lining his entire face still even Jace’s had faded. I know this revenge thing is working but I want it to be better. Hell, I needed it to work better.

“Kiss me,” I whispered to Jace. He looked confused for a moment before pecking me for a second on my lips. “No, I mean really kiss me.”

I didn’t wait for him to do anything so I grabbed his shirt and pressed his lips to mine. They moved together like they were made for each other as his tongue lightly traced my lips making it turn into a make out and also making me forget that this was all to get revenge on Sean.

My stomach started bubbling in excitement, we never went this far yet. We always had our kisses with our mouths closed so why was this happening right now? I forgot about the Kayla thing and continued kissing Jace until we were out of breath. The music still played through the room and our foreheads came together, gazing into each other’s eyes.

“Who are you?” He breathed with a little smile.

I raised an eyebrow, “What do you mean?”

“You aren’t the little, crying girl that I talked to at the end of summer. You’ve changed but it’s definitely for the best.”

            “I wasn’t that bad.”

He snorted, “Really? You’d drown yourself in ice cream and tears all because of Sean but now it’s like you’re over him but it is all this little act we’re pulling off.”

“Y-yeah,” Why did I just stutter?

The song ended and we pulled from each other. He took my hand and led me out of the cafeteria then to the cars. He opened my door for me like a gentleman and then came around the other side, waiting for students to move out of the way.

“You know, we don’t really know anything about each other. Tell me about yourself.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Anything,” he smiled at me and I thought about it.

“My name is Peyton Olivia Brandt, my first boyfriend was Patrick Reed, my favorite color is purple, I’ve been dancing for almost my entire life, my favorite flower is a lily,” I smiled at the corsage he gave me because he picked my favorite flower accidentally. “I don’t know what else to say… What about you? What’s your life story?”

He finally got to leave the school ground and we cruised down the roads. “I moved here when I was six, I met Dillon on my first day of school when we were paired together for a reading group.” He smiled at the memory. “We drew pictures of the teacher in the books. When I was thirteen, my dad left us and then at fourteen my brother died—“

“You had a brother?” I interrupted him and he took a shaky breath, immediately making me regret my words.

“Yeah, his name was Alan and he was a few years older than Cara. He was my idol…” Another deep breath, “He was a soldier and died while in combat. I remember having two men come over to our house to tell us. My mom sent Cara and I upstairs but I snuck down and heard the whole thing.”

I saw his hand tighten on the gear shifter in the car so I placed my hand over his and I felt him relax a bit, “I’m sorry… We don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”

“No, you should know this stuff. The anniversary of his death is coming up in a few days and my mom will lock herself in her room that day yet again.” He sighed, “It’s hard on all of us. I’m the only one who still visits his grave.”

“If you want, I’ll come with you.” I suggested and he looked at me in surprise when we stopped at a red light.

“Yeah, I’d like that.” He smiled lightly and started driving again. “I hope you don’t mind though.”

“Not at all,” I thought about my next sentence. “When I was four, I was home with my mom when Dill was out at baseball game with my dad. Have you heard this story before?” He shook his head as a no. No one knows this story and my family don’t like to talk about it either so Jace will be the first to find out. “Well, my mom was upstairs on the computer while I was playing in the main floor of my old house. There was a candle and I thought it was cool so I started playing with it. I ended up dropping it onto some curtains and within minutes, our house was surrounded in flames. I passed out in my kitchen and I next thing I knew, I was awake in a hospital. We lost everything then moved here.”

He was silent for a moment, “Were you okay?”

I shook my head, “I had to stay in the hospital for days because I have asthma and all the smoke made me not be able to breath.”

            “You have asthma?”

I nodded, “I was born with it. I don’t have it seriously but I still carry around an inhaler. I can’t even stand being around fire now after that. We used to live in Minnesota until we moved here for a new life. Everything was gone except my mom and I, we even lost our cat.”

He pulled up in front of my house. Dillon still wasn’t home yet so we just stayed in the driveway, “If you’re ever invited to a bon fire and don’t want to go, just call me. We’ll do something.”

I smiled, “Thanks. Just call me when you want to go visit your brother.”

I started to step out of the car but Jace grabbed my hand, “Oh, and Peyton?”

            I turned to him, “Yeah?”

            “You looked beautiful tonight.”

I blushed and I hoped that he couldn’t see because that would be beyond embarrassing. His comments weren’t supposed to make me blush! It’s not like we’re actually going out.

            “Thank—“

“Also,” A smirk formed onto his very attractive face. “That dance was super hot.”

I laughed and shut the door. He rolled down the window and I leaned on the car.

“Keep it in your pants, Harley.” I laughed then raised an eyebrow, “Maybe I’ll teach it to Dillon.”

I strutted away just before I heard him yell one last time.

            “Wait, what?"
