“So why exactly did you come to me?”

Cara and I were walking through the mall searching for a dress for the dance. There wasn’t a theme so basically I had the freedom to do anything.

“Because you’re a fashion expert and you’re the only one who knows about Jace and I.”

She smiled at the compliment I gave her as she brought me into some store with a lot of dresses both in the window and overall. She went through around ten racks and at each she threw me at least five dresses, making me try them on later.

“So how’s it going with my brother?” She asked me while I tried on yet another dress that I hated. “I haven’t heard much of him these days.”

“He got suspended,” I said while zipping the back of it. “All because of me…”

“Ha!” She laughed, “How the hell did he manage that?”

I didn’t know Cara that well but it wasn’t hard to feel comfortable around her. She’s a nice girl who’s really easy to talk to which beats out half of the American citizens basically. I told her the story of Sean starting with the fight at the party and ending with the… well, the fight on the field.

“That’s some tough shit,” She exclaimed before I stepped out in a pink dress that absolutely clashed with my red hair. “Next.”

I sighed and went to the next dress, a turquoise one that would’ve looked fine if I had my brunette hair back. I stepped out and Cara just shook her head in disapproval again.

“But why would he do that?” She asked me while I changed again.

“I don’t know. I have no idea what goes through the male mind.” I scowled as I looked at the next dress on me. I might as well have been a tomato because this was just too much red.

“You have no idea whatsoever?” She stressed as I walked out earned a scrunched up nose from her signaling that it was a no. “Not even a little guess at least?”

I started searching through all the dresses hoping to find one that I liked, “Well… I was thinking that since I’m his best friend’s little sister maybe he wants to look after me.”

My eyes rested on a very light blue dress. I wouldn’t have even thought once about wearing it when I was with Sean but for some reason it was calling to me. I shrugged and started putting it on.

“You two are so difficult…” I heard Cara groan to herself. I ignored her as I pulled it on and looked at myself in the mirror, smiling for once.

“I don’t even know why he went through all the trouble to ask me so… ostentatiously. I’m his fake girlfriend, not real!”

I stepped out and her eyes widened. She looked up with a huge smile indicating that she liked it as much as I did.  I inspected it and it would even be good for the dance that we’re going to be doing.

“That’s it,” she told me. I paid for it and we walked out of the store in happiness.

“To top it off, I have to do a routine at this dance while in a dress. I’m kind of nervous because it’s not my kind of… moves.”

She raised an eyebrow, “Oh? What do you mean?”

I turned red and looked down, “It’s really… hot.”

“What?” She smirked at me, I already knew that she heard.

“Hot,” I said only a little bit louder.

            “Oh?”

“I said it’s hot!” I yelled and people looked at me weird as I passed them.

Cara laughed, “Peyton! You’re so adorable, why don’t you just do a dance like a it here to make you more confident?”

My eyes widened, “No! People would laugh at me!”

“Jace says that you’re an amazing dancer.”

            “Jace talks about me?”

Her eyes widened and I eyed her. She obviously said something that I shouldn’t know. Does Jace talk to her about me a lot or did he tell her about what happens at school?

“Yeah,” She said but then added on quickly. “Just to make sure with plans and such. He tells me what happens at school sometimes as well but I don’t know the whole stories. I know about the dance at the assembly and how you were rubbing all up on him. He said that he really liked that and he—“ She rambled on then stopped herself quickly.

            What a bullshitter.

I raised an eyebrow at her and crossed my arms, “Really now? Why don’t you continue?”

She bit her lip, “I’d rather not…”

I laughed as we made our way through the most popular part of the mall. I noticed Kayla and some of her ‘friends’ walking around with their noses up like they ruled the place. Bags in their hand from dress shops told me that they came here on the same mission but theirs probably included lingerie underneath.

“Come on Peyton,” She said as we pushed through a crowd of people. “This is your time to boost your confidence. Just dance! I think you’ll have fun.”

“More like I’d die of embarrassment…” I muttered and she grabbed her ipod out of her huge purse plus small speakers. “What the hell? Why are you carrying that stuff?”

She shrugged, “I like to work out and I take these because the music at the gym sucks.”

She turned on a fast, upbeat song and people started looking at us weirdly. I tried turning it off but Cara slapped my hand away.

“Fine, I’ll get you started.” She started busting out some random, horrible moves and people started making a circle around us with huge smiles on their faces. When Cara stopped, they all clapped.

“My friend here is an excellent dancer and needs to get over her little baby fear so why don’t we all get her to join?”

People clapped and I immediately turned bright pink. I pulled off my jacket and took off my shoes while glaring at Cara.

“I really hate you,” I seethed while I rolled out my ankles really fast.

“You’ll thank me later,” She said while waving at someone to my left. I didn’t look because Cara pushed me into the middle of the now growing circle and I slowly started moving to the beat.

Some really slow song came on and I rolled my eyes, throwing my own ipod to Cara. “Third song of the first playlist,” I told her and I heard the familiar mash-up join my ears.

I flipped my head back and moved my legs back and forth. I began the routine that I fell in love with a few months ago and I’m pretty sure that no one has seen me do it other than the mirror in my studio. I went down with my legs out to the side then quickly back up. The males in the now huge audience hooted with excitement.

At one point near the end of the song, a fuming blonde pushed through the crowd and hated all the attention on me. Kayla flung her bags at her friends and took off the hooker heels that she wore. She ran through the circle and did some sort of flip making the guys cry out in glee.

“You have to go to a mall to get attention?” She sneered at me while I stopped the routine to glare at her.

“You have to interrupt a performance to get attention?” I mocked. Kayla rolled her wrists and did another impressive move, landing perfectly.

I rolled out of my wrists and did a flip. She stared at me in surprise as I just smirked at her.

“I’m a dancer. I had to take three years of gymnastics to get flexible enough to be a good one,” I winked at her and rolled my body to the music that was playing. I spun around and I hit one of the bags that I had discarded, tumbling to the ground.

But I didn’t hit the ground. As soon as I hit the bag, I continued spinning towards the floor but a foot stepped closer then I was surrounded in a bear hug. I looked up to see Dillon trapping me in his arms with a laughing Jace behind him with Cara.

“Don’t get involved,” He said to me and released. He took the music player from the stereo and handed it back to me.

“He didn’t like the dance,” Cara chuckled.

            “It was too revealing!”

I laughed and patted my brother on the head while Jace spoke, “I thought it was good.”

I stared at Dillon waiting for approval but he just sighed. “Why are you two here anyways?” I asked them and Jace held up a bag.

“For homecoming,” He smiled. “Why are you with my sister?”

“Shopping for dresses,” He eyed the bag and made a move towards it but I rammed him away. He lost his balance and we both went falling to the ground. His strong arms wrapped around me as I laughed my head off into his chest. I guess one fall wasn’t enough for me.

“Save it for the dance,” Cara mumbled as Jace spun around to help me up.

“So I really have to wait for the dance to see that?” He eyed the dress that would soon be completely different tomorrow.

“Yep,” I said, pushing him away. “Now go! We’re not done here yet.”

“Well neither are we, why don’t we all just go together?”

“Get the hell out of here!” Cara cut into our little banter. “She needs time away from you two boys, let the girl be!”

Jace left but not without another look while Dillon was dragging him. The two boys had bags in both hands and Dill had a hand on his best friend… They looked sort of gay right there. Maybe Jace will go with Dill after this ‘relationship’ is over.

            I would support that decision.

We made our way through the mall getting stuff for my hair and makeup. As she drove me home she promised that she’d be over to help me out for the dance on Saturday then left. I really liked Cara; she was a fast, active person that made you have to run to keep up with her plans. I wish Dill would hang out with her to take off all those empty calories he consumes daily.

            Speaking of Dillon…

“Dude! That’s baking soda not baking powder!” He yelled and I walked into the kitchen to see both him and his best friend covered head to toe in flour. Jace was mixing some strange liquid in a bowl while my brother had a very dirty piece of paper in his hands.

“What are you two doing?” I laughed and set my bags down near the stairs.

            Dill shrugged, “We wanted cake.”

What was in the bowl definitely didn’t look like cake batter. To point out, it was green.

“Want me to help?” Their faces brightened as I took the bowl away from Jace and threw it into the garbage. They started yelling at me while I laughed, “I’ll help you by saying that you should go buy one.”

With that, I grabbed my bags and walked up to my room where I began the start of my new dress. When I was done, I put in back in my closet with a smile. This dance was going to be interesting.

“Knock, knock.” I looked up to see Jace with a plate of store bought cake in my doorway. I nodded my head signaling that he could come in so he did, handing me the food.

“Thanks,” I smiled and took a little bite. It was okay, not the best but not the worst.

“So I was thinking…” He started while fiddling with his fingers and looking down. “Would you want to a dinner with me before the dance? I know Dillon, Alyssa, Luke, and some of my other friends are going.”

I smiled as I took another bite, “We can do whatever you want. Like I said before, I don’t want to ruin your senior year with this whole shindig.”

“You’re not! But that sounds fun right? I’ll pay for your dinner and everything—“

“I said okay,” I smiled and pulled my red hair into a ponytail while he eyed me.

“I like your hair down,” He muttered and started twirling the end of it.

I breathed out, “How should I do my hair for the dance?”

He smiled and looked up at me, “However you want it to. I don’t want to be the only one having fun there, you deserve this as much as I do. Plus, it doesn’t even matter.” He smirked as he said the next part, “You’re amazing just the way you are.”

I laughed and pushed him playfully, “That was really sweet by the way. I don’t think I’ve had time to talk about it with you, thanks.”

“Like I said, you deserve it.”

I looked at him and completely ruined the moment, “Why are you helping me?”

Confusion crossed his face, “Why are you helping me get revenge on Sean?”

He looked uncomfortable for a moment, “I… I didn’t like the things he did to you.”

I raised an eyebrow because like his sister, he was also a horrible liar. “Are you sure about that?”

“Yes!” He scrambled up and yelled to the imaginary person outside my door, “Yeah Dill, I’m coming!”

He started to leave but I stopped him. “Jace?”

He stopped at my doorway and turned around, “Yeah Pey?”

I winked, “My dress is light blue.”
