I stood there anxiously while I looked down at the knee socks, spandex, and a off the shoulder shirt that everyone else—besides the guys—was wearing on the dance team.
I felt someone touch me and I jumped before realizing it was Alyssa.
“Relax, you’re a great dancer. Nothing will go wrong,” she encouraged and I took a deep breath.
The cheerleaders walked out into the middle of the gym where everything was being presented in the pep assembly. I noticed Kayla with her skirt higher than all the others as the song ‘Milkshakes’ came on.
I rolled my eyes as she smirked at me while shaking her ass. During the middle of the routine, she stopped going along with it and grabbed Sean from where the soccer players were sitting. He paled, as she basically started dry humping him in the middle of the gym. Guys from all around the room wolf whistled and the whole time Kayla was looking at me.
“That slut…” Alyssa muttered. “She’s rubbing it in your face. Does anyone know if Melissa is here?”
Melissa isn’t a teacher at the school. She’s just one of those coaches that comes to help out for free and she loves doing it.
“No, she said that she wouldn’t be here to watch since she’s taking her cat to the vet.” Someone said.
Alyssa smiled, “Everyone! Gather around, we have a few changes.”
Within ten minutes of the cheer routine being over, Alyssa had explained the ‘new’ routine and everyone loved it… except me.
“Come on Peyton! This is going to be great.”
“Yeah, for everyone else but me. This will be so embarrassing…”
“And now we have our Hillcrest High dance team!” The student body president said into the microphone and everyone started hooting.
We walked out into the middle of the dance floor and I stood in the middle now. The song ‘Girlfriend’ came on and we started the routine as it originally was.
Halfway through, the team started clapping and five of us went to the boy’s soccer team to grab one guy to come dance with us. Unfortunately, I was one of those people and Alyssa told me to specifically grab Jace.
“Shit, do I have to?” He muttered.
My eyes widened, “I don’t have a choice.”
We lined them up a few feet from the five of us. I noticed Sean sulking in his seat on the bench and smiled.
The guys looked nervous to be up there and I realized that Alyssa had chosen my brother. She winked at me then my mind focused on the routine.
Stutter step forward, arms waved, kick, roll of the body, little leap and slide legs back… 5, 6, 7, 8.
Then came the big finale. The other girls brought their guys a little to the side leaving Jace and I in the middle with the other dancers in back. Everyone was in sync then at the very ending I pressed Jace’s face closer to mine and his hands immediately went to my waist. I smirked at him at the exact moment the music ended and wolf whistled were heard all around.
I winked at Jace and pulled away from his grip. He looked disappointed for a moment before bowing to the audience. I laughed and pushed him back to where he was supposed to be sitting with his team. I walked off with my own and Alyssa tackled me with a bear hug.
“Perfect! Absolutely perfect! Did you see Kayla’s face? She was so angry, karma’s coming around for her. Damn, it feels good to finally get revenge on her. You know she took my boyfriend in tenth grade? Yeah, sad moment in my life.”
I ignored her going on until Tessa piped in.
“And damn! Did you guys see Jace and Peyton? You could basically see the sparks that were flying between the two. You guys are a match made in heaven.”
I froze, that wasn’t true whatsoever. What Jace and I had was fake. This was simply a plan that we made so that he’d learn about girls and I’d get my revenge.
“Come on guys, it wasn’t that good…” I muttered and everyone stared at me like I was crazy.
Alyssa just shook her head, “Whatever. Let’s just continue watching the pep rally.”
We sat down on the side of the gym and my eyes couldn’t help but wander over to where the soccer players were sitting. I was surprised to see that Jace was also looking over at me. I blushed and ducked my head down, acting like I was texting someone.
My phone buzzed after a few moments and I opened a text from Jace.
Don’t pretend.
I blushed even redder than before but I didn’t look up from my lap. I quickly sent another text back.
Sorry for bringing you up there…
Another text came only moments after.
Just wait, that won’t embarrassing to me after what’s going to happen next.
I looked at him and I knew confusion was written in my brown eyes but he just smirked.
“And now… The boys soccer team!”
All of them rushed up to the middle of the gym and some action music came on. Jace took the microphone from the principle to talk into it.
“I’m Jace Harley, captain of the 2011 boys soccer team. Soccer is a great sport but do you know what makes it better?” He paused and sent a wink over my way. “Well, the boys.”
He ripped off his shirt and the boys lined up behind him did so as well. On their stomachs there was a letter right in the middle and all of them spelled out ‘Hillcrest boys soccer.’
A giggle erupted from my mouth at how ridiculous they all looked.
Alyssa whistled, “Damn. They’re all super hot under the clothes as well. Look at those abs… Soccer is now my favorite sport.”
I smiled and the boys left the gym floor and over to us. The next awaiting act left their bleachers and took the place of the soccer team.
Jace slid by me with Dillon next to him. “Did you like the show?” He asked with a smile.
I rolled my eyes, “Please, I saw that yesterday.” I immediately regretted my words.
“You saw Jace shirtless yesterday?” Dillon asked with his jaw set.
“We had to wash off from our food fight in the kitchen…” I mumbled and I knew Alyssa was bursting with excitement right now.
Dillon raised an eyebrow. “Whatever,” He said and pulled on his shirt again. Jace stayed like he is with the blue ‘H’ glistening on the flat panes of his stomach.
We continued watching the rest of the pep rally before going home for the weekend. Jace took me home as always and hung out with my brother. I was cleaning my room when the doorbell went off. I went downstairs and saw my best friend leaning on the doorway.
“Finally! I feel like we haven’t talked in forever.” She laughed and I opened the door wider so she can walk in. She pranced up to my room with following close behind. “Where’s Jace? I saw his car in the driveway.”
“How did you know that was his car? Are you a stalker or something?” I laughed and Lauren just rolled her eyes.
“I see you taking off with him everyday but that doesn’t answer my question.”
I sighed, “He’s with Dillon, his best friend. Just because we’re going out that doesn’t mean we’re with each other 24/7.”
She cracked a smile, “You could’ve fooled me.” Lauren moved her blonde hair behind her ear and jumped onto my recently made bed.
I pressed my lips together. Lauren really doesn’t know how to keep things orderly. “So why are you here again?”
“I just wanted to say hi.”
I crossed my arms with a smile, “I know that look… you want to see Jace and Dillon.”
She turned bright red, “Don’t blame me, they’re super hot.”
“One’s my boyfriend and the other is my brother. That’s gross…”
She gave me a cheeky grin. “Sorry but you know it’s true. I mean about Jace, not Dill because if you thought that then that’d be illegal. But where are they?”
“In the den,” Lauren started getting up. “Don’t do that! They really don’t spend a lot of time together now since Jace and I are together. Let them be.”
She sighed, “Fine. Why don’t we go to the pool? I brought my swimsuit.”
I smiled and had her change in the bathroom while I took my room. When we were done, we went through the kitchen to the backyard where a small pool laid in the ground. Before going outside, Lauren stopped in our eating area in confusion.
“Why is there food on the ceiling?” She asked and I burst out laughing.
“No reason,” I said and pushed her out the door and into the pool.
When she resurfaced she spit out water, “Hey! I wasn’t ready.”
I smirked and jumped in with my best friend. We swam around for a little while until we heard the back door open again.
“Damn, the pool is already taken.” Dill said where both him and Jace stood in swim trunks. It wasn’t surprising to see them wanting to swim as well. This was probably the last nice day of the year before fall takes over.
Even though Lauren and I were already in it, the boys joined us. We swam around until I got out to use the bathroom. When I was done, I started going out to the pool but Jace was in the kitchen.
I was about to ignore him until he cleared his throat.
“So… Good performance today.”
“Look it wasn’t my fault. I could care less about what Kayla and Sean did up there but Alyssa wanted to retaliate.” I knew he didn’t buy it. My face basically screamed ‘I’m not okay.’
He gave me a frown and wrapped his arms around me. It wasn’t those fake hugs that’d we would share out in public. This one was for the old sophomore Peyton who was still hurting from the guy who cheated on her. I snuggled my head into his chest as I heard Lauren scream from the pool. When we finally pulled away, he stared down at me.
“I don’t blame you for feeling this way, I know that you still love him but I really think that being in a fake relationship with me is going to help that out.”
“Jace? Have you ever loved someone?”
He pursed his lips, “Nope. I haven’t had a girlfriend long enough for that to happen.”
I smiled at him, “It’s hard to break that kind of thing. I don’t want to have any more feelings for Sean but it’s going to be hard. He cheated on me, he doesn’t deserve my love.”
He nodded in agreement and nodded his head over to where our best friends were swimming in the pool.
“Should we go back out there?” He asked.
I smiled, “I don’t control you. You can do whatever you want.”
He gave me a grin in return and started towards the door.
“Oh Jace?” I called to him before he opened it. “If you ever want to end this fake relationship, just tell me. I promise that I won’t take it too hard.” I smoothed out my red hair, I’m still getting used to it. “I feel bad about having you in this since this is your senior year…”
He smiled, “I agreed to this. And also, this is probably the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my high school career. We’re lying to the whole school, I doubt that has ever happened before without getting caught.”
“We’re just one of a kind.”
