twenty three
After pushing my way out of the crowd, I ran all the way back to the castle. I only started to slow down when I neared the Hospital Wing.
Madam Pomfrey was going through a shelf full of potions, reading the labels on each one.
"Where is he? Is he okay?" I asked, trying to catch my breath.
"If you're talking about Mister Black, he's still asleep," Madam Pomfrey replied, paying no mind to my state of panic.
I went past her, towards the only bed that had the curtains drawn around it.
"Miss McKinnon, he is still sleeping."
The moment between his collision with the bludger and his fall to the ground seemed to pass so slowly. My heart was racing as I watched his body hit the ground.
"Please-, I just want to make sure that he's okay!" I begged.
I know I probably sounded crazy, but I needed to see him.
All of the anger I felt towards him flew out the window the second that he hit the grass of the quidditch pitch. I wanted to hold a grudge with him, I really did, but in a moment of pure panic all I could think was that I forgive him and I miss him.
Madam Pomfrey frowned at me, "Miss McKinnon, I'm afraid that I can't let you see him until he's awake."
I was about to argue back when the sound of sheets shifting and a groan of pain came from behind the closed curtains.
Brushing past Madam Pomfrey, I ripped open the curtain surrounding his bed.
Laying against the white sheets was Regulus Black. His dark curls were a mess as he tried to sit up. His right arm was in a sling, and he had a bruise blooming across his cheek.
He looked beautiful.
My eyes softened when I saw him, finally knowing that he was okay. I felt like I could actually breathe again.
When he was on the ground, unmoving, I thought he was dead. He was brought away on a stretcher before anyone could give a thumbs up that he was okay, so I assumed the worst.
Madam Pomfrey pushed by me, rushing over to his bedside.
Regulus's eyes meet mine, and a small smile comes across his face.
"You took quite the tumble there, Mister Black. How are you feeling?" Madam Pomfrey asked, grabbing a potion off of his bedside table.
"Sore," Regulus said. "My shoulder hurts."
"Drink this," Madam Pomfrey ordered, pushing the potion into his good hand. "You have a dislocated shoulder and a mild concussion."
After a fall from that height, he only had a mild concussion. I thought for sure he split his head open. Yet again, I was in a state of panic.
Madam Pomfrey sighed, "The potion should kick in soon, I'll leave you two."
The older woman left, closing the curtain behind her.
I rushed over to his bed, carefully sitting on the edge so that I didn't hurt his arm.
"God-, I thought that you died!" I said. "You fell so fast, Reg."
Despite all of the pain he was in, Regulus smiled at me.
That goddamn smile.
Regulus exhaled, "I'm okay, I promise."
"You fucking scared me," I admitted, staring into his eyes.
"I'm okay, truly," Regulus said, making me relax slightly.
My eyes raked over his body looking for scratches and bruises before my eyes met his bluish-silver ones.
"I thought that you were dead," I repeated, trying to get a grip on my emotions
"Aw, you care about me?" He joked, grinning at me.
I want to smack him upside the head, but considering the fact that he has a concussion, I'll wait a couple of weeks.
These few weeks without you were awful. I miss talking to you. I forgive you. I want to be able to trust you again.
"Of course I do, you twat! More than you even know," I muttered.
An unreadable expression passes over his face before he smiles at me. "Meredith, I'm okay," Regulus claimed.
I make a split second decision, and the next thing I know my lips are on his.
After getting over the initial shock, Regulus kisses me back, his hand cupping the side of my face.
I want to kiss him hard. I'm angry with him for scaring the shit out of me. I'm still angry with him for the hurtful words he said to me. But considering the fact that he's in bed in the hospital wing, I kiss him softly like the night in the astronomy tower.
I pull away, feeling a blush creep up my cheeks.
"Sorry, I just-, I saw you fall and all I could think about was everything between us," I stuttered. "I miss you, Reg."
Like the idiot he is, Regulus smiled.
"Damn, if I knew this was all it was going to take to get you to forgive me, I would've fallen off my broom two weeks ago."
I laughed softly, "You're an idiot."
"Maybe I am," He replied, his finger brushing across my jaw.
I kissed him again, our lips crashing together behind the closed curtains. Kissing him feels right. Even after all the shit he said, I can't ignore how right it feels to kiss him.
We were too caught up kissing to realize that the curtains around his bed had been opened.
"Oi, what're you doing here, McKinnon?"
I jumped away from Regulus, standing up beside his bed.
Evan Rosier is standing near the curtain, his hand still gripping the blue fabric. He glances between the two of us, grinning. "Ah, I'm glad to see you two finally made up."
I smiled at Evan, my cheeks still bright red. "Hey, Evan," I said.
"Glad to see that you kept him company," He teased. "Don't expect any kisses from me, Reg, as much as I know you want to."
Regulus rolled his eyes, leaning back against his pillow.
"Hooch made me play the rest of the match," Evan announced.
Regulus raised his eyebrows. "And? Did we win?" He questioned.
Evan crossed his arms, "Well, Graham had to fill in."
The black-haired boy frowned.
"But-, we still won!"
Regulus smiled, "Good, now we just have to beat Ravenclaw or Gryffindor."
"Gryffindor, you mean," I interjected. "We're winning our match in two weeks."
Both of the boys grinned.
Regulus stared at me, then glanced at Evan, who was oblivious at his hint to give us a hint alone.
He cleared his throat, "Mate, can you give us a minute?"
"Not if you're going to shag," Evan joked, already stepping on the other side of the curtain to talk to Madam Pomfrey.
I sat back down on the side of his bed, resting my hands in my lap. Regulus reached out, brushing his fingers over my hip.
"I don't trust you," I said.
"I know," Regulus replied. "But I want you to be able to trust me again, eventually."
"I'm not ready to have sex with you again, and I don't know when I will be."
Regulus nodded, "That's okay. We don't have to do anything that you don't want to do."
"And this needs to be kept quiet," I added. "Just imagine the 'scandal'," I joked, remembering what Evan had said.
Regulus glanced up at me. "Okay, done," He replied. "So are you going to give me another shot, McKinnon?"
I sighed, "Yeah, I guess I am."
Regulus smiled at me and he brought his hand up to my jaw and tilted it down so that our lips were brushing against each other.
"You won't regret this," Regulus whispered.
Our lips meet and he kisses me again, keeping it gentle.
When we break apart, we're both grinning.
"I have to go," I mumbled. "I kind of left all of my friends and ran all the way here."
"I wish I would've seen that," Regulus laughed. "Go, I'll see you later."
I smiled at him as I got up from his bed. When I turned and opened the curtain, Evan was standing on the other side, smirking.
"Aw, that was really cute, guys."
Regulus sighed, "Knock it off, Rosier."
