Chapter 5 - Living With Einstein and Ke$ha
Chapter 5
---
"Okay listen up, class." Mr. Walker clapped his hands together and the class quieted down. "For this in-class project, your seats will be rearranged according to the partners you'll have. Ash, you're with Natalie, Alec, you're with Hannah, Brittany, you're with Ryder..."
Drake and Natalie switched so now, I had Natalie on one side and Ryder on the other.
"So your project is going to be about microbial antagonism. You guys already know what to do since we already discussed it yesterday. Use the microscopes in front of you. You may begin."
"So like, what are we supposed to do." Natalie drawled out the last syllable annoyingly, while she stared admiringly at her bright pink nails.
Great. She was another all-looks-no-brains. She flipped her dyed blonde hair and winked when she caught Ryder staring at her. It was like working with Karen Smith from Mean Girls.
Apparently, Ryder also had another bimbo and was left to do all the work. Surprisingly, he was already half-way done.
The task was fairly easy, and it took me 4 minutes to fill in the entire page. Natalie was no help at all, flirting with Ryder the whole period. As soon as the bell rang, I practically flew out of class, eager to leave the morons.
I dumped my books in the locker when I remembered that I have Gym. People started piling out of class like liquid fire, and soon enough, I could barely move among the mass of people.
Once I finally reached the gym, I saw that everyone was already there with their gym clothes on.
Fantabulous.
"You're late Ash."
"I'm sorry." I quickly ran to the girl's locker room, not ready for a speech.
"You're going to start with a race around the gym. Winner chooses what match you guys are gonna play."
I got into position and waited for the anticipated whistle. I felt the adrenaline rushing through my veins.
Emma and I ended up winning by a tie.
"Nice game," I told her, feeling the blood pound in my face.
"Yeah, but we're playing soccer, right?" She laughed and I joined her laughter.
"Of course we are."
The last three periods passed by very quickly, and suddenly it was the end of the day.
I searched the parking lot for my precious red Volvo C70 Convertible. It was my baby and my 16th birthday gift from my parents.
I was supposed to drive Damon home with me today; we take turns. Sitting in my car, I flipped through the radio channels. Almost all the songs were either too trashy or overplayed so I just shut it down.
The school was almost empty now. Driving my car around the school, I looked for him behind the school, on the soccer field, and then I found him in the football field.
Making out with Celeste.
I honked at them twice to let them know that I'm there. They quickly broke apart shocked by the loud disturbing sound. Celeste seemed very annoyed by the interruption and I rolled my eyes.
I rolled down the windows and said loudly, "I practically memorized every corner of the school from looking for you, you bloob!"
From the corner of my eye, I saw Celeste rolling her eyes. Ahh, she just wants all the attention to her.
"Get inside," I unlocked the passenger door and waited for him.
Damon was 5 months older than me, but that didn't stop me from ordering him around.
"You interrupted us," Damon muttered annoyed.
"Yeah, I noticed that too." I rolled my eyes and drove the car out of the school.
We were only 7 minutes away by car, and we reached our house in no time. Turning off the engine, I left the car and Damon rang the doorbell.
He can not be serious, I thought incredulously.
"You have the key Einstein." I push him aside and opened the door. The rich aroma of Mexican food wafted up my nose and I breathed in deeply.
I threw my bag on the floor and ran to the kitchen.
"I knew you'd be running throu-"
"Mexican," I squealed in delight and Elyse laughed at my overly excited behavior.
Elyse handed me the wooden spoon and went to the vinyl player. The song 'Hotel California' started playing, low at first, but louder in a second.
Elyse grabbed a spatula and started singing to it and dancing around:
"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair."
"Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air," I continued, now dancing dramatically through the kitchen.
"Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light."
Now we both started singing together:
"My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night!"
We both started laughing at our un-synced horrible voices and she went to stop the record playing on the vinyl.
We both had pretty good voices, but not when they were combined; Our voices were way out of sync and we sounded like Ke$ha trying to sing without auto tune.
"So, how'd you do in school today?"
"It was fine, I'm thinking of joining the track team." I added the spices to the salsa and mixed it.
Cooking was Elyse and I's thing, ever since I was 3. We'd dance while cooking and singing our butts off. At times it wasn't pretty, but we couldn't care less.
"Yeah? And what about that Ryder guy that you punched." She tried to hide her smile but I was still able to see it.
I laughed and said, "He didn't do anything to annoy me this week, so I didn't do anything that might affect his ability to walk again."
She joined in the laughter. "I was just like you when I was younger. There would always be that guy that'd annoy me. I despised him at first."
"At first?"
"Yes, now he's my husband and we have beautiful children."
"Oh my God, Dad?" I asked, shock lacing my voice.
"Yup."
I laughed at the thought of Ryder and I being married. It was near impossible, actually, no, it was straight out impossible.
After lunch, Elyse and dad decided to go out to do some shopping for our house, so Damon and I chose to watch a movie.
He handed me the remote and I flipped through the channels until we settled for The Parent's Trap.
I grabbed the bowl of butter popcorn that Damon had heated while I was flipping through the channels and lied back.
We watched in silence, occasionally laughing until the first commercial came and I decided to ask him about Celeste.
"So, how'd you and Celeste meet?"
"We have American History and Algebra together," he said, popping a handful of popcorn into his mouth.
"She seems. . . nice." I tried looking for the appropriate word to describe her, but then again, I didn't get that much of a chance to know her.
"You don't have to pretend to like her." He rolled his eyes.
"Look, I don't really know her, but the looks she was giving me today said a lot about her. And they weren't the 'ooh you're even hotter than Theo James' kind of looks." I snickered remembering today afternoon.
He's about to say something when the commercial ended, and the twins came back on.
I wrapped the soft fluffy towel around my body and stepped out of the bathroom. After slipping on comfy sweats and an old shirt, I blow-dried my hair, thinking of the conversation Bex and I had yesterday.
It was ridiculous, and really a joke, the fact that we could change Ryder and break his heart once and for all.
To take my mind off the matter, I did my homework whilst listening to some music, and then watched some YouTube. But even after doing all that, I still couldn't stop thinking about it.
I closed my laptop and decided to change my clothes to leave. Slipping into a pair of converse, I ran downstairs.
"I'm going over to a friend's house," I yelled to no one in particular, but Damon had heard.
I got inside my car and turned the engine on, backing out of our garage.
The drive was short, about 5 minutes, and soon enough I was in front of a quaint but pretty-looking house. It was probably the same size as our previous house.
Walking up to the front door, I kept rethinking my actions. Should I be doing this?
I ignored my thoughts and rang the doorbell once.
No one answered.
Just as I was about to ring the doorbell again, the big burgundy door opened to reveal Bex.
"Oh, uhh, hi," she said confused to as why I was at her front door at 10 pm.
This is not Reece. I can't be going to other people's house thinking that they'll understand like Reece did.
"Hi, I'm sor-" I'm about to apologized for being here at such late hours when she cut me off.
"Come in, come in." She opened the door wider, and I stepped inside the cozy house.
"Bex, I think we should do it."
"Do what?" She yawned and stretched her arms.
"I think. . .I think we should break his heart, Ryder. I think we should turn the tables and give him a taste of what it's like. Give him a taste of his own medicine."
