Prologue
The eerie violet glow of two curiously wide eyes pierced the dark of the quiet house. Shadows danced across the creature's pale, white face as they stumbled through the moonlit room. They slowly dragged themselves across the living room to the front door.
Their empty gaze followed the snow as it fell gracefully outside. The only neighbor in the area sat on the outskirts of a quaint, snowy town. Their wooden cottage stood still on the frozen tundra, lit by a single, cautionary lantern hung by the door.
But none of this registered with the poor creature. Their mind remained a blank slate, save for the ambiguous task that played over and over like a mantra. The need to fulfill the strange urge was instinctual, running through their veins and gnawing at their bones. They were a vessel, a body to be used by a mysterious, ancient drive embedded in their DNA. Tonight, they were a slave to their instincts, a perfect, loyal servant to their primal side. It was in their blood.
Presently, coming up to just a few inches below the windowsill, stood a thin side table with basic décor. A snow-white hand moved through the darkness to grasp an item sat on the table: a book, one sat next to a stack of them. The being inspected the wire-bound object, turning it round and around in their hand. Seemingly satisfied by their find, the creature placed the book on the top of the stack, only to pick up another object: a match. With a flick of the wrist, it was struck against the table, and a small flame was a light.
A warm glow washed over the darkness, bathing the strange being in golden firelight. The creature seemed entranced by the delicate, little flame. For a moment, all they could do was watch as it flickered and danced, eyes wide with a hint of silent awe. They muttered something under their breath, and quickly went about lighting the book. The flame took to the cover instantly, spilling even more light into the room. The being grunted, placing the lit match on the table.
Crash! Slam!
The creature whirled around, shoulders tense and body primed for battle. Their head perked up in interest as they potted the source of the noise. The book tower they had arranged on the kitchen table had fallen to its death, leaving paper-bound corpses littered across the floor. Well, that simply wouldn't do.
The mysterious being dawdled on over to the table, and began the process of rebuilding their book tower. Unbeknownst to them, when the creature had turned towards the kitchen, the table by the window continued to burn. The tiny flame ventured across the surface of said table, heat licking at the wood until it blackened.
It was only a matter of time now before the seemingly careless accident evolved into a dangerous, life-threatening blaze. The moon outside held its breath.
Alright so not too many changes from the fanfic so far. Did anyone catch the differences? Comment them once you do! The next chapter or the one after should see this story's first MAJOR change, so stay tuned! :D
