Chapter 6
ONE WEEK LATER
The bridge has come together nicely. We are one week in and it's already over halfway done. I was at the bridge nailing some planks into place. Today we were putting up large beams to go over the top of the bridge. They were very heavy so the whole team was going to have to work together to get it up. There was five beams we had to put up over the top. It was going to be a massive task. Lauren was next to me nailing in some planks. I've already forgotten what she did to us. I've forgiven her. She saved my life from Anthony a long time ago. That's why I didn't kill her.
Sh was smiling as she put in another nail. She grabbed the plank and rocked it back and fourth to see if the plank was put in place. She nodded and stood up. She looked at me squinting her eyes from the sun. She put her hand over her eyes for shade.
"This Bridge is starting to come together"
Lauren smiled.
I nodded.
"Yeah it is something" I said.
Lauren tapped me with her hammer softly.
"Why don't you go stay with Samantha, I'll take over for you" Lauren said.
"Nah. I wouldn't miss building this bridge for a second. Also I've got Brooklyn looking after her" I said.
Lauren looked away and then looked back at me again.
"Brooklyn huh?" Lauren said elbowing me.
I closed my eyes for a second. I then nodded no.
"She's just a friend" I said looking at the ground.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean t..." Lauren said.
"No. It's ok. You don't need to keep apologising. It's my fault I haven't gotten over... you know what. Just. I'm gonna go check on Samantha" I said.
I dropped my tools and walked over to the campsite. I saw Brooklyn smiling with her mouth open wide like a surprised face looking at Samantha. Samantha was laughing her head off holding one of her toys, a plastic cup. I sat down next to Samantha and scratched her in the head.
"Mummy is funny daddy! I mean Brook" Samantha said.
"Brooklyn is funny" I said.
Brooklyn could tell that hit me in a bad spot.
"Are you hungry or thirsty baby?" I asked.
"I'm fine" Samantha said.
"Ok. I'll... I'll come and check on you again later" I said.
I stood up and walked down the road. I walked over to a bench about one hundred meters or more from the bridge. I looked out at the river. A tear ran down my cheek, and my throat began to become dry. It's been two years and more since she died, and I can't forget her. No matter what I do.
I saw Megan coming towards me. I quickly wiped away my tears. She sat down next to me and rested her head onto my shoulder. She then started to hug me. I hugged her back brushing her hair with my fingers like I used to do.
"I miss her dad. I miss her so much" Megan said crying.
"I do to baby" I said as tears ran down my cheek.
I've cried basically everyday for the past two years so when I do cry only a little bit of tears manage to come out.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for not really ever talking to you, after she died. I blamed you for her death but I didn't know anything. I'm sorry. I love you dad" Megan said.
"I love you too" I said hugging her tighter.
After a few minutes we both wiped our tears away and walked back to the bridge. I held her hand as we walked back. I saw Jemma the little girl who saved me from Finn was sitting alone.
"You're friends with Jemma right?" I asked.
"I am" Megan said.
"Alright. I'll see you later ok. I need to get working on this bridge" I said.
"Ok dad" Megan said.
I gave her a kiss and she kissed me back. She walked over to Jemma and they started talking to each other. I walked back to the bridge and saw people preparing to put the beams up. I walked behind Paul and put my hand on his shoulder.
"Need any help?" I asked.
"Sure man. We are all going to lift it up as high as we can and then we will pass it to the second group of people who are higher then us who will then place the beam and nail it down" Paul said.
"Ok cool" I said.
Paul is Jemma's dad. I saw Claire behind me.
"Look at our little babies" Claire said pointing at Megan and Jemma both laughing together.
"I know. There not even babies anymore. They are all grown up. This thing. The communities coming together to build this bridge is something great. I was think of hosting a fair. For all of our communities" I said.
"Well I'm excited for that" Claire said.
We lifted up the beam. We got the beam as high as we could and the second team picked it up. They placed it onto vertical beam and nailed it down. It wasn't that hard because of how many people were lifting the beams.
"One down four to go" Erin said wiping her hands clean.
"We still got a lot more to do after those four beams" Taia said.
"We are getting there though" Alice said.
Alice was also apart of the group I helped from Finn. A few hours past and we were finished for the day. At the end of the day I started to do a small speech before we all packed up. So everyone stepped around me and they all looked straight at me. I stood up straight to make myself look confident and random words that I was thinking on the top of my head slowly came out.
"We all worked hard today. We all worked together. Everyone of us. Not a single one of us argued about something. We all came together to help one community out. Together. Not you. Us. We have been in this world for so long and look what we have accomplished. I'm excited for what the future holds. Together we will make that future happen. Making this bridge will create a chain reaction. We will be able to trade goods, we will be able to go from and to Port Adelaide with ease, and we will be able to see this which will make us think of what we can accomplish. Because we are a family. No matter what you say. Also just to remind you. Once this bridge is finished Adelaide Oval will be holding a fair to bring all the communities together for trade. So if I was you start finding out cool things you could possibly trade for" I said.
Everyone started to clap and cheer. I slowly smiled and nodded clapping as well.
