Chapter 5

I woke up early in the morning. I was a little confused because it felt like I stayed up all night but I guess I dozed off at some point. I saw Samantha was still asleep so I slowly got myself out of bed. I was already dressed because I was too tired to change into my normal clothes I slept in last night. I walked outside and saw a few people awake.

Today is the first day of building the bridge. A few of my people as well as Ana's people will be all going down to Port Adelaide to help. We set up wagons for the horses which can only carry about six people in it so we have to wait for Ana to get to us so we can put a few of my people onto her wagons. Mount Barker have about four hours meaning they can have two wagons. Ten of my people are coming which means we would have to come back for a second load of people as Ana has her people to deal with as well.

I saw that Megan was awake. She was sitting alone on a table eating something. I walked over to her and sat down in front of her. She looked up at me a little bit but then looked back down at her food.

"How did you sleep?" I asked.

"Fine" Megan said.

"That's good. I'm taking a group of people down to Port Adelaide today. I was wondering if you wanted to come? You don't have to if you don't want to but if you did come you could meet some new people from Port Adelaide" I said.

Megan continued to stare at her food.

"ok" she whispered.

"Alright cool. You can come with me on the first wagon with Samantha" I said.

I stood up and walked around to Megan. I put my hand on her shoulder and she hardened up a little.

"I'm sorry, I don't know why you're angry with me, but if it's something I did then I'm sorry" I said.

She didn't respond to me so I walked away slowly. Megan is only about ten years old and she's been through so much. She's grown up in a world full of death and sadness. That's all she knows really.

My walkie talkie buzzed.

"Hey Sam, were almost at the Adelaide Oval see you soon" Ana said.

I picked up the walkie talkie.

"Yep. I'll see you" I said.

I put the walkie talkie back onto my belt and walked up to the gates. I waited a minute and the gates opened. I saw two wagons riding in and on one of them was Ana and Kane. Kane had Prince on his lap. They stopped inside and the gates closed. I walked over to them.

"Nice to see you again" I said.

Ana got out of the wagon and gave me a big hug. We've been through so much that we treat each other as a family.

"I've missed this place so much. I haven't seen you in like a month" Ana said.

"Well you have been busy with Mount Barker" I said.

Kane got out of the wagon, he walked up to me and gave me a hug as well.

"Nice to see you man" Kane said.

"Good to see you too" I said patting his back.

"So you're ready to do this thing?" Ana asked.

"We are" I said.

I walked away to gather everyone up who was coming. Ana's two wagons were basically full and she only had room for two others. Megan, Gabriella, Paul, Taia, Erin and I got onto our own wagon with Samantha on my lap, and Claire and Jemma both got onto Anas wagon.

Isabella, Alice, Hayley and Anastasia were all going on the next pick up.

"Ok guys I'll be back later to get you" I said.

They all nodded and we rode out heading towards Port Adelaide. The roads were all cleared out by us a year ago when North Adelaide moved to Port Adelaide, so it was an easy ride. There were only a few Zombies in the road but we completely just rode past them without having to take them down.

We made it to the bridge and Port Adelaide were already hard at work gathering tree logs. We were surprised. We stopped and we all got out heading towards the bridge. The Port Adelaide leader greeted us. His name was Connor.

"Hey guys glad you made it" Connor said.

"Yeah. We still got another group of people that I will have to go back and get but we are happy to help" I said.

"That's good. Well today we are just collecting as many tree logs as possible, we found a firewood shop just north of here. The place has massive tree logs perfect for the bridge" Connor said.

"That's great. Well let's get cracking" I said.

I turned to Ana.

"Hey Ana could you look after Samantha until I get back" I said.

"You know what. Why don't I go back and get the rest of your people. You stay here" Kane said.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Yeah. I'll be back soon" Kane said.

"Ok, well thank you" I said shaking Kane's hand.

Kane ride off on the wagon heading back to the Adelaide Oval. The rest of us walked over the camp area. We all sat down. I looked around and saw people with smiles on their faces. I looked at Ana.

"You know what would be a good idea. I think we should hold a community fair. So we can have more times like this" I said.

"That would be a great idea. Each community could come together and trade their goods. That's something we should actually plan" Ana said.

"Where should we have it?" I asked.

"We should have it at your community. I mean it's a perfect size for it. It has a massive open area as well so it would be easy to set it all up" Ana said.

"Yeah, that's true. I'll ask Connor later about it to see if he would wanna do it" I said.

"Ok so when are we gonna get started?" Erin said.

"What about now?" I said.

"Alright" Erin said.

Everyone walked off except for Samantha, Prince, Ana and I. I stayed to look after Samantha and Ana stayed to look after Prince.

"So How has it been? I mean with your community and everything" Ana said.

"Yeah my people are really coming together. In the past years they have been getting closer and closer which is great. What about yours? Any complications?" I asked.

"No mostly been pretty quite" Ana said.

"We sent Tyler and Luke out for a run a little while ago and only Tyler returned. Tyler was out there alone for about a day or two and when he got back he was completely out of it. He was saying that the zombies were talking, they had strategy. I don't believe him because I went out there with Gabriella and we didn't see anything out of the ordinary" I said.

"Weird. Where do you think Luke is?" Ana asked.

"I don't know. He wasn't there when we went to find him. Hopefully he finds his way back. Tyler didn't really tell me what happened to him" I said.

I stood up.

"Could you look after Samantha for a little I'm gonna go check on things" I said.

"Sure" Ana smiled.

I walked towards the bridge and saw Erin and Taia both standing together. They were both apart of the group I helped from Finn. I walked up to them.

"So how are things?" I asked.

"Things are great. I thought I would be locked up in that place forever, but look at us now. We are building a god damn bridge. Something I never thought would ever happen again" Erin said.

"We are rebuilding for the future. It surprises me as well" I said.

"It's like seeing a mobile phone working for the first time" Taia said.

"It sure is" I said.

I heard someone walking up behind me.

"Hey Sam! Do you need anything?" Brooklyn asked.

"No I'm fine. What about you do you need anything?" I asked.

"Nah. I'm good" Brooklyn replied.

"Actually there is one thing. Could you look after Samantha every now and then, cause I would love to help with this bridge" I said.

"Sure I can do that" Brooklyn said.

"Thanks" I said as I looked forward at the broken down bridge.
