Chapter 23
Everyone looked at me. They all had faces of fear. I would never forget their facial expressions. Ana looked at me. She looked like she knew that she shouldn't of left.
"What can we do?" Lauren said.
"We have to prepare. We need to build up the gate, make it stronger. We don't have the weapons for this" I said.
"How do we know they are coming?" Ana said.
"We broke our deal. They are coming" I said.
"I broke the deal. I'm so sorry Sam. I had so much hate and anger. She killed Kane, now Prince will grow up without a dad. I needed to kill Alpha. I wasn't thinking, I shouldn't of gone. I'm sorry" Ana said.
"It's too late now. It's been done, there's nothing that can be done to change what you did. So don't apologise, there's no point" I said.
"No, it's my fault. So I'm gonna make it better. I will do anything you need" Ana said.
"Ok, if were gonna do this we need to work together. Ana can you go get all the guns, weapons and ammunition we have left. Lauren take a group of people outside to the parking lot and move the cars in front of the front gate like a maze, so it's harder for the zombies to get through. Isabella choose a group of people to take shifts for watch. We need someone looking over the walls at all time, shout out or shoot, if we have the ammunition if you see anything weird, or off. I'm gonna take a small team out to make a block of with cars. The rest of you who don't have a job, stay aware. Build up your rooms in case you have to retreat. We can do this. We have done it before. Just not with this many zombies" I said.
"I have about five rifles that aren't rusted at Mount Barker. We could take all of our stuff from Mount Barker to here. They would come in handy" Ana said.
"Good idea. I'll get the guns and weapons. Take your people back and bring anything we can use" I said.
"What about Port Adelaide?" Gabriella asked.
"I'll try and contact them" I said.
I walked off towards the armoury as everyone ran off to do their jobs. I walked into the armoury and saw only two rifles on the table. That's all we had left that wasn't rusted or broken. I also had my revolver but a limited amount of ammunition for it. I think I only have about thirteen bullets left. I checked the ammunition crates stored under the table. I opened one of the crates of two. It was half full of full clips already loaded for the rifles. I opened the other crate and it was less then a quarter full. Maybe about an eighth full of bullets. They weren't loaded into clips they were just singular bullets. I grabbed one of the rifles and grabbed two clips for it. The clips can have up to five bullets and the gun can have one in the chamber.
I walked outside and spotted Isabella talking to a few people who are probably going to be the watch team. I handed her the rifle.
"Ammo is short. Only use it if you have to" I said.
She nodded as I walked back to the armoury and took the last rifle. When Ana gets back we will have more rifles for people. But rifles wouldn't take out that many zombies. Especially when we only have about a hundred bullets left. I put the rifle onto my back using the strap. I walked out of the armoury and saw Gabriella walking over to me.
"Can I help with the car block?" Gabriella asked.
"You can" I said.
Gabriella was already ready to go so she jumped onto a horse. I jumped onto a horse as well and we were about to leave as I heard someone shouting my name.
"Sam!" Paul yelled.
I turned around and faced him.
"Could I help?" Paul asked.
"Get on" I said.
Paul got onto my horse and we rode to the gate. Isabella saw us waiting at the gate and quickly ran over to the watch tower to open the gate. She opened the gate and we rode out.
"We don't have to go out far, we can just block off a few roads heading this way and we should be good" I said.
We made it to a large road. The road would be a great road for the horde to go down. It's a massive road meaning the zombies could spread out more. But if we narrowed the road and blocked it the zombies would have a hard time pushing their way through. The road also had lots of cars along it making it easier for us.
I stopped quickly, and got off my horse.
"Let's block this road off" I said.
Paul and Gabriella both got off their horses as well. We all tied them to a light pole. I walked over to one of the cars. I went to open the car door but the handle broke off. The plastic was so worn out and old that it just snapped like a plastic fork. I grabbed my rifle from my back and smashed the window with the stock of the rifle. The glass shattered easily in one hit and pieces of glass flew everywhere. I reached in through the car window and unlocked the door. I then pulled the handle inside of the car and I was able to open the door.
I then got into the car and pushed the hand brake down. The was no longer in brake. I then put my hand on the wheel to steer it and began to push it. But it wasn't budging. Paul and Gabriella both ran over to help but we couldn't push it. I looked at the tires of the car. They were decayed and melted. They weren't really even round anymore. I got onto my knees and took out one of my knives from my holster. I started to stab at the tire to round it off. Gabriella and Paul both started to do the same on the other tires, and soon enough the car started to move a little. We all stood up and pushed it to the side of the road so it was horizontal to the road.
I looked at the gap there was and it looked like we needed way more cars.
"I'm think about six or eight more cars should do it. Then we will move on to another road, then another and then we can head back" I said.
Gabriella and Paul both nodded as we got to work. A few hours later and we had finished blocking off the road. There was no way a horde could push through this. No matter the size. We even put a few more cars in the middle to make it stronger.
Gabriella walked off to her horse while Paul and I stayed back. I looked at Paul and he smiled back at me.
"I saw Claire laying on the floor yesterday. She looked like she was beaten, badly. Do you know anything about that?" I asked.
He looked a bit too confident when he answered me. I didn't like it.
"She's been drinking a lot lately. She's been going out a lot of nights drunk. Maybe she just collapsed and injured herself" Paul said.
I looked at him. He looked away.
"Well, we've got work to do" Paul said walking to the horses.
It was a long day but we blocked off a few roads that we thought Alpha would use. We now had to get back so Ana can take a few people back to Mount Barker to get their things moved to the Adelaide Oval. We rode back to the Adelaide Oval and as we got back the car maze in front of the front gate was finished. It was done well. We had to zig zag through it in order to get through the gate. This would easily slow down the horde. The gate was open so we rode in. We all got off of our horses. I saw Lauren walk up to me.
"Hey, we got the maze done as you can see. We also moved one of the cars inside so we can block the gate shut if the horde comes. How did it go with you?" Lauren said.
"It went well. We blocked off three main roads connected to the Adelaide Oval. We should be good at the moment" I said.
Lauren nodded and walked off. I saw Ana with a few of her people.
"The horses are yours" I said.
"Thank you" Ana said.
I saw Paul walking over to Claire who was sitting on a bench. Paul walked up beside her and nudged her. She fell to the side a bit but recovered. He looked angry for some reason. I was about to walk over there when I saw Paul grab Claire's hair. He stood up and basically dragged her. I quickly ran over. Paul looked at me and let go of Claire's hair.
"Oh hey Sam. What's up?" Paul said.
I looked at Claire, she looked petrified and sad.
"Where are you taking Claire?" I asked.
"I need to have a word with her" Paul said.
"What about?" I asked.
"Nothing that you need to worry about" Paul said.
I looked into Paul's eyes with pure anger. I was very angry at what he's doing to her. I slowly walked up to him. He stepped back a little. It's funny that he's scared of a eighteen year old when he's about thirty eight. I pushed him and Claire stood back a little.
"Sam it's ok" Claire said.
"No it's not. Claire this is your time to be brave. I want you to tell me what he's doing to you. Tell me that I am correct in thinking that he's beating you. Be brave. Because I'm here to help you, and so are all these people around us" I said.
Claire swallowed a bit of spit and looked at Paul.
"What the fuck are you on about?" Paul said.
Claire looked to the ground.
"Yes. You are correct" Claire said.
Paul looked at Claire and pushed her hard. She went falling to the ground hitting her head hard on the grass.
"You birch!" Paul yelled.
I quickly pushed Paul to the ground and punched him in the face. Memories of what I did to Jeremy went through my mind as I kept on punching Paul. Claire sat up a bit.
"Sam stop! You're going to kill him!" Claire yelled.
But to me I didn't even hear her say that. I just kept punching. My hands started to hurt but I couldn't stop. His face was becoming redder and redder from either bruising or blood. A few pieces of his teeth got stuck into my hands as I kept punching. I couldn't stop. But then at that moment I thought of Megan. I was angry that she died and it felt good to get that anger out. But she wouldn't want me to be like this. She would want me to stay strong for her. So I slowly backed up. I stopped punching him. He was still alive because I could hear him breathing. There was a small crowd around me who was watching on. I stopped back a bit and watched Claire start to cry over Paul's body. I wiped the blood off of my face and walked away.
