Chapter 13

THE NEXT DAY

It was a long day yesterday. After the bridge opening we all packed up and went back to our communities. When I got back I worked on the fair with Debra. She was a massive help. We got up all the stalls and now the entire fair is ready. Tomorrow people are allowed to come over and set up their stalls for the fair, and in two days the fair will begin.

I stayed in bed scratching my eyes and looking up at the roof. I was very tired. I looked over at Samantha's bed and saw that she was fast asleep.

I quietly got out of bed and put on my shoes. I walked outside walking across the Oval. I walked to the prison cell to check on Harry. He was still in the cell. I didn't say anything to him and I continued to walk around the oval saying good morning to everyone.

I saw Megan sitting by herself. I walked up to her and put my hand on her shoulder.

"Morning" I said.

"Morning dad" Megan said.

I smiled and walked away. I saw that Brooklyn was up in the watch tower. I walked to the ladder and climbed up. As I climbed up I heard someone crying. As I got to the top I saw Brooklyn crying. She saw me and quickly wiped her tears away so I wouldn't see her crying.

"Hey... what's up?" Brooklyn asked.

I stepped up into the watch tower and sat next to her.

"Are you ok?" I asked.

"I'm fine" Brooklyn said.

"Brooklyn. I saw you crying. Come on. Tell me what's up" I said.

She had a large pause. She had her face in her hands and she began to cry again. I scooted my chair closer to her and hugged her.

"Would you feel better if you didn't tell me?" I asked.

"It's about what we did. I... can't forget it. I just can't. It's all I can think of" Brooklyn said with her eyes full of tears.

"What happened changed me as well, and I'll never forget about what happened. But we just have to move on. We did what we had to. We had no choice. It was either us or them" I said.

A YEAR EARLIER

Brooklyn and I are out on a search. We decided it would be a good idea to go out into unmarked area and search for valuables we might need. We decided to head to a place called Glenelg. It's a big town and has a beach.

Brooklyn and I were walking the streets walking past houses and searching every third one, slowly making our way to the Glenelg Marketplace.

"So, I heard North Adelaide is moving to Port Adelaide. Would they need extra hands for that?" Brooklyn asked.

"Probably yeah. I told them their community would be at risk against The New Order. They decided to move. Which was good. Now we have an extra addition to our communities" I said.

"Do you trust Connor?" Brooklyn asked.

"He may seem on the weird side but I think he's alright in my books. Let's check this house out" I said.

We both turned into the house. I turned the knob of the door but it was locked.

"Step back" I said.

Brooklyn stepped back as I kicked the door down. The door opened quickly hitting the wall with a large bang. As we walked in I looked up and saw a zombie hanging from the ceiling. He must of tried to hang himself. It must of been awhile ago as well. I guess he didn't know that you come back if you die. No matter what.

I grabbed a stall and cut the rope. He fell to the ground and I stabbed him in the head. Brooklyn and I continued to walk forward. We searched every room. All we came out with that wasn't out of date or wasn't valuable was a large knife, three water bottles and some soap.

When the house was fully searched Brooklyn and I walked out of the house. We kept following the road, and soon enough I could see the Marketplace. Brooklyn and I started to speed up because we know when we have searched through it we would have enough stuff to take back.

The doors were mechanical so we walked around to another door. I slowly opened it and I took a step in. A large rattle noise started to go off. I saw that there was a wire connected to the door and when it was opened it would rattle the cans. Brooklyn and I quickly walked in trying to make as less sound as possible.

"Either someone's still here or a zombie heard that so stay sharp, keep quite" I said taking out my revolver.

We slowly walked inside looking around every corner and room, just in case we were attacked. We found bed rolls all over the ground with pillows and blankets. There were about six of them. Someone is definitely either here or was here.

"Stay close. We just need to get what we need and then we are getting the hell out of here" I said.

We were now in the main market area. Where you can walk into every shop. We kept walking down trying to find the shop with the most valuable items. We turned around the corner and in front of us were six little kids all lined up across the pathway. It was pretty creepy. We slowly moved towards them.

"Hey. We mean no harm. We are just here for a few supplies" I said.

I looked around and didn't see any adults.

"Where are your parents. Or adults?" I asked.

"We don't need adults protecting us. We are strong on our own" a boy said behind me.

Brooklyn and I turned around to face the boy. He looked a little older then all the other kids.

"You're here to take our stuff. What do we get back if we give you our things?" The boy said.

"If you're scared or alone we can take you back with us. We have shelter for all of you. We have people that can care for you" I said.

"Like I said before we don't need parents" the boy said.

"How old are you all?" I asked.

"The youngest is six I'm nine" the boy said.

I heard knifes being pulled out. I looked behind me and saw all the little kids holding knives in their hands. They all looked angry. They were all looking at us straight in the eye.

"You're here to take our stuff. We want our stuff" the boy said.

"We don't want to hurt you. We can move on" I said.

"KILL THEM!" The boy said.

At that moment my heart started to beat. The little kids started running at us with knives tightly in their little hands ready to slash at us or to stab us. Brooklyn and I moved back a little keeping our weapons down.

"Come on. Stop it we aren't going to hurt you!" I said.

They kept running at us.

"Stop!" I yelled.

They just kept running until they made it to Brooklyn. Brooklyn pushed one of them back but the little kid cut her. The cut looked pretty deep. About four kids were going for me and I tried to kick them away from me, trying not to hurt them. The boy behind us came at me and I turned around. I grabbed him and kept him away from me as Brooklyn fended off the other little kids pushing them away.

"Stop! Tell them to stop!" I yelled.

"Never!" The boy yelled.

"Argh!" Brooklyn yelled in pain.

I looked behind me and she had a knife sticking into her left leg. I kept holding back the boy and slowly reached for my knife.

"I'm sorry" I said.

I closed my eyes and stabbed him in the brain. He fell to the ground dead. All the little kids stopped fighting Brooklyn and just looked at me. Then they looked at the boy I killed.

"You still have a chance to live. Come back with us. Please" I said crying.

"Ahh" the kids screamed as they ran towards me.

I grabbed my revolver from my holster and aimed it at one of the kids. I shot. The kid fell to the ground dead. She looked about seven. I cocked back the revolver and aimed it at another kid. I shot. The kid fell over dead. He looked six. Brooklyn grabbed her gun and shot one of them as well. I closed my eyes and started to shoot them as they got close to me, and all of a sudden I didn't hear one tell or scream.

I opened my eyes and saw six kids dead bodies laying on the ground each with a bullet in their heads. I turned around and saw the boy laying on the ground dead as well. I had blood all over me.

I looked up at Brooklyn and she looked petrified. She limbed towards me still with the knife her leg. I walked to her and she hugged me while crying into my shoulder.

PRESENT DAY

"We did what we had to" I said.

I wiped Brooklyn's tears away as she looked into my eyes. She slowly moved closer to me and I let her. She closed her eyes and she slowly moved her face closer to mine. I close my eyes as well and we kissed. Her lips were soft. Just like Hunters. She moved away and opened her eyes. She looked into my eyes and hugged me.

She then pushed me to the ground and sat on top of me. We kissed again longer this time though and with a little bit of tongue. I slowly moved my hands to her shirt and pulled it off of her. I sat up and kissed her again. I felt her pulling my pants down slowly so I started to pull her pants down as well.

All of a sudden we were having sex. It felt good. I think I overcame Hunter. I think I can finally let my thoughts of her looking down on me with another girl to rest. We had sex for about thirty minutes. We then just sat up in the watch tower kissing until it was Coopers shift.
