Of songs and valkyries

A young man of age 14 stood in the middle of a dark room, in front of a computer. With a wooden acoustic guitar in hand, he started to strum it.

Reluctant heroes.

Day by day

We have lost our edge
Don't you know?
Forgotten is the life we led
Now it seems
You don't care what the risk is
The peaceful times have made us blindCan't look back
They will not come back
Can't be afraid
It's time after time
Once again
I'm hiding in my room
The peaceful times have made us blind
So you can't fly if you never try
You told me, oh, long ago
But you left the wall
Outside the gate
So more than ever, It's realIt was like a nightmare
It's painful for me
Because nobody wants to die too fast
Remember the day of grief
Now it's strange for me
I could see your face
I could hear your voiceRemember the day we met
It's painful for me
Because nobody wants to die too fast
Remember a day we dreamt
It's painful for me
I could see your face
I could hear your voiceSong for the reluctant heroes
Oh give me your strength
Our life is so short
Song for the reluctant heroes
I wanna be brave like you
From my heartSong for the reluctant heroes
Oh Give me your strength
Our life is so short
Song for the reluctant heroes
I wanna be brave like youCan't look back
They will not come back
Can't be afraid
It's time after time
Once again
I'm hiding in my room
The peaceful times have made us blind
So you can't fly if you never try
You told me, Oh, long ago

His door suddenly opened violently. Luckily he was done recording and he saw his aunt. Most people would not believe him but he knew who it was. It was his aunt, Theresa Apocalypse, the eternal 12 years old. Heh! Little brat with cuteness complex.

"Rex! Time for school!" She said with a smile. "Oh? Were you recording?"

"Yeah... I better have something to do while not in missions." He said as he let his guitar down. He was already bathed and dressed. After all, he lived in the same place as his aunt and legal guardian.

"well, you better be in your best mood mister. You have new classmates joining you." Hearing this, Rex flinched. He never got good memories with his classmates. Especially if you were the only guy. The mangas had given him lied. Well, that along with the fact that he was directly descended from a traitor. One still popular and a derogative term for Shicksal even if the overseer himself had forbidden it.

"Classmates? Again?" Rex asked his aunt who nodded.

"Yup! One of them is the daughter of my good friend, Cecilia, and that idiot Ziggy." She said, saying the last name with what he can only guess as disdain. Yeah, the only reason his aunt let him live with her was that they were related by adoption. She must hate him, after all his original family was filled with traitors and backstabbers.

'You should never have been born!' He remembered one of their words before drowning them out.

'She probably wants me to move out so she can take her in,' He thought as he was prepared. He only bought a few things. He can disassemble his computer and just take a few rounds back before he can get all his things from his room. She would probably make better use of this place anyway.

Oblivious to his nephew's thoughts, Theresa just smiled as she turned around. "So get your butt out and get ready to school, you know the first impression is everything!" She said as she went on her way first.

"What's the point they'll just call me backstabber like usual," he said as he replaced his school blazer with a hoodie that was quite comfortable. Only the class rep was kind to him, like a big sister but it was just her job. Nothing else.

Sighing as he took his bag, He looked at his prized possessions, his lyre, and atlas of songs.

He had it ever since he was seven before great-grandpa Otto found him. It calmed him down and it was his life. He took care of them every time and didn't let a day go by without playing them.

Opening the case, a least he will be able to play it during break hours on the rooftop.  He took his lyre and hid it in his bag. He can sneak out again for a solo gig later... if he did not get a mission. For some reason, the mission control always gave him the hardest one and it was always him alone like they wanted him to die so they can wipe out the stain in history and he oathbreaker's only remaining descendant

As he walked down the stairs with his hoodie up to hide his face

"Rex? Come join us." It was Miss Himeko, one of his teachers.

"No thanks, I'm not hungry." He said. And went on his way.

"You sure? You can join us."

He did not wait for her to finish. He knew she was just being nice because of his job. Maybe he can play on the plaza before heading to St. Freya. At least while doing that his classmates can only see him during classes.

He did buy that apartment so maybe he can move in. At least it will put less strain on Aunt Theresa's allowance if she no longer sponsored him.

As he walked through the city, he smiled as he saw his usual spot. He was about to take out his lyre but stopped when he saw some students from St. Freya were hanging out there. Sighing, he just walked away and headed to school.

But before that, he bought some spicy convenience store food and drinks. It would take him a few trips from the dorm and back to get all his stuff.

"Rex? Why are you buying food in the convenience store?" His class rep, Fu Hua, asked as she stopped him from walking away. This was it, he was dead.

back in the dorms

Himeko sighed as he watched her favorite student go. She did not hate the boy, rather she treated him like a little brother but he...

"Where's Rex?" Theresa asked as she looked for her nephew.

"He just left," Himeko said with a sigh. She wanted to find a way to help the boy. He only joins them at the dinner table when he absolutely has to or whenever Theresa becomes a mother hen and drags him there to eat.

"What?!" Theresa pouted before sighing, she knew what the boy had been through but there is only so much she can do. As the principal, she can't show favoritism so much and it hurt her minuscule chest (compared to her other family members) that her nephew was suffering so much. "I was hoping we can eat together as an apology for barging on his recording."

"he was recording again?" Himeko asked.

"Yes, he likes recording songs and listening to music," Theresa said. She put on a tracker on his phone but rarely used it. It was only in case of emergency and she did not want him to find out. "here, I follow him." She said, showing the red-haired teacher her nephew's website and his social media accounts like a proud mother.

"Metal? But... he's so shy!"

"Well, it's surprising at first but he is surprisingly good at them, especially with ballads and slow-type songs."

As the two women listened to their student's songs, the young man was cornered. Fu Hua, his Chinese classmate and class rep, looked at him while forcing him to eat one of her packed lunches.

"Honestly you should be eating more! You're so thin!" Fu Hua shouted as she made sure he ate the meal like an angry grandma o her grandchild.

"I'll pay you back for this." He said as he finished swallowing a mouthful.

"OH! You will! By eating properly!" She pointed out. She knew his eating habits and she was worried. She often sees him eating ready-made foods such as instant and convenience store goods.

"But I am eating properly." He weakly defended himself. Sadly his stomach betrayed him by growling loudly. Turning red, Rex can only look away as he ate while Fu Hua chuckled before her expression turned neutral.

"We have new classmates today." Fu Hua said with a gentle smile as she handed him a can of juice. Mango, his favorite.

"Aunt... I mean principal Theresa told me." He said as he finished eating and stood up to wrap the lunch box.

"I see. Come on, we need to make sure you're ready." Fu Hua said with a smile as she walked with the boy.

The walk was silent but Rex it was not awkward in fact, he hummed a song as he walked with her. It reminded him of the time when he was still younger and smaller when Aun... Principal Theresa held his hand as they walked.

Arriving at their rooms, he had his guard up and quietly sneaked into his seat. It was filled with writing such as Traitor, Creep, and more. It was annoying but he knew he can't blame them.

Rex just sighed as he looked at the writing and cleaned his desk before letting it dry and sitting on his seat, which was different and smaller than usual. He had to make do with it.

At least his pen pal from New Zealand was having a better life than him. He ignored everything and focused on his memories of what song to play later. He looked up and saw the new girls. One caught his eyes and he froze, white hair like ash, blue eyes like the sea. That girl was no doubt a Kaslana.

"Well, now that we have a Kaslana here, maybe we can get rid of this traitor spawn." One of his classmates said, a B-rank Valkyrie said as all girls laughed while the Fu Hua glared at them, and Himeko froze. It got this bad.

"Traitor spawn?" The smallest girl, Bronya if he remembered it right, asked and the girl just smirked.

"Yup! The Kaslanas have always been the heroes of Schicksal, why not be one of them and get rid of this creep, named Rex Crozzo. He's the direct descendant of the Oathbreaker."

"Myne!" Fu Hua shouted, destroying her desk in anger as she slammed down on it and stood up while glaring at her.

panting heavily one of his strands turned green and he can feel it. The wind... he needed to get out of here.

Moving quickly, like the wind, the young man escaped, ignoring Miss Himeko while taking his bag, he needed to get out of here! inside him, noticing his emotions, a small queen piece glowed turquoise before dying down.

'Take care of Dvalin, will you?' A familiar voice said as soon as he arrived on the rooftop of the school. And on instinct, took his lyre out before playing the ode and songs of a thousand winds.

Hearing the familiar song, a wind dragon roused from its slumber, the pain is felt from the wounds it received from the evil dragon corroded his mind, yet this song... his friend was calling for him.

"This song... Barbatos. I'm coming, old friend." The dragon said as it flew to the sky, six wings giving it flight as it entered through a portal of a thousand winds.

_______

Man, people are gonna be mad. Well, seems like Fu Hua to the rescue and what's this?! A dragon?!

what will happen next?
