Prologue

Olivia Lockwood had always felt like the odd one out in Havenbrook, a town where almost everyone either was a human or possessed supernatural abilities but stayed hidden. Her mother was a fae, a college dropout, and posed as an artist, and her aunt Lily also a fae, was a gifted matchmaker, she was well-known for her unique match making. Even her uncle Benjamin, a siren who was known as the one who was breaking hearts and posed as a musician. But as for Olivia's own powers remained a mystery.

The bigger mystery, however, revolved around her father, an enigma her mother refused to discuss. It was as if Havenbrook was a perfect community where everyone knew their place, and what to be all except for Olivia who struggled to uncover her own potential amidst the already established supernatural beings.

As her mother and her packed up their belongings, preparing to leave Havenbrook due to her mother's decision, Olivia couldn't help but feel a tingle of disappointment. They were missing out on June and Aunt Lily's wedding, an event promised to be filled with magic and celebration. Yet, deep down, Olivia held onto the hope that they would return in time to witness the joyous occasion.

"You need to stop being so serious and dull when we get to Emberwick. It's a chance to start over and meet peers who are nothing like you," Olivia muttered to herself, contemplating the uncertainties that awaited her in the new town. "If only I could, but I can't," she replied with a mixture of frustration and curiosity. She couldn't shake the feeling that something extraordinary awaited her beyond the familiar streets of Havenbrook. With a sigh, she left her room and found her mother descending the stairs with a box in hand.

"Mom, do you ever wonder what it would be like to have a 'normal' family?" Olivia asked, searching for a connection she yearned to understand. Her mother chuckled, a hint of warmth in her eyes. "Oh, sweetheart, who needs normal when we have our own brand of extraordinary. Normal is overrated." Olivia sighed, feeling the weight of her questions. "Then why are we moving to Emberwick?", "Well, it's a chance to change things up," her mother replied, a glimmer of nostalgia in her voice. "The beauty of Havenbrook will always be here when we visit." Olivia glared at her, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "If we visit, that is... It's just... sometimes I feel like I'm still trying to figure out who I am and what I'm capable of. And who dad is..."

Her mother met her gaze, a mix of emotions passing between them. "We're not talking about him. You and I, we're a team, Olivia. No matter what challenges come our way, we'll face them together with love, laughter, and a touch of magic. We don't need him in our lives." As her mother walked out the front door, Aunt Lily entered from the kitchen. Olivia seized the opportunity to ask her about her father. "What did you say?" Aunt Lily inquired, curiosity in her eyes. "I just asked about my father and why we have to move," Olivia replied, her voice tinged with longing. Aunt Lily raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms defensively. "Libby, sweetheart, I know you're curious about your father, and it's natural to want to know more about him. But there are reasons why your mother keeps him a secret.", "Why?" Olivia pressed, her eyes searching for answers. Aunt Lily glanced around, ensuring her sister wouldn't overhear. "If I told you... you would have to face the consequences of knowing." Olivia laughed, a mix of frustration and determination. "Aunt Lily, get to the point. I'm old enough now. I'm nineteen. I can handle whatever it may be. I just want to know who he is, where he is. I want to know about my own father. What if he has an ability that I could possibly have and maybe I can harness it?"

Aunt Lily hesitated, then took Olivia's hand, a mix of concern and guilt on her face. "Fine. It was a difficult time in your mother's life, and she made the decision to protect you from the pain of who he was." Olivia tilted her head, her curiosity piqued. "What do you mean?"

Aunt Lily locked eyes with her, her voice softening. "Your father... he wasn't born supernatural. He was a human." Olivia's eyes widened, absorbing the revelation. Her mother reentered the room, their gazes meeting, the unspoken tension palpable. "Dad was a human," Olivia whispered, the weight of the revelation sinking in.

Her mother's face hardened, and she exchanged a glance with Aunt Lily. "How many times have I told you not to mention her father? It always has to make me bring her to them," her mother said in frustration. Aunt Lily confronted her, refusing to back down. "Yes, but she has a right to know. She's nineteen, and that's all she knows... that he was a human." Her mother groaned, weary of the discussion. "What is the consequence for knowing?" Her gaze shifted to Olivia, her voice laden with a mix of concern and resignation. "It would involve a mind-wiping ceremony, a chain of events that would shatter your brain, erasing all memories of the past and present. After that, you would be handed over to the Arcane Organization."

Olivia's mind raced, the mention of the enigmatic Arcane Organization sending a shiver down her spine. She had heard whispers of their existence, an organization dedicated to safeguarding the secrecy of their world, to ensure the truth never leaked out about Havenbrook. And now, they would play a role in her own story. Faced with the impending mind-wiping ceremony, Olivia couldn't ignore the surge of rebellion within her. The idea of having her memories shattered, her life and identity rewritten, was a cruel fate. She resolved to protect herself and uncover the mysteries that had plagued her existence.

"Any last words?" the operator asked, their voice tinged with a sense of finality.

Olivia locked eyes with her mother, determination burning in her gaze. "Mom, I may not know everything about my past or what lies ahead, but I do know one thing for certain - I won't let anyone define who I am or what I can become. I will learn again... and I will learn about my father."

Her mother's face blurred, her features becoming indistinct as Olivia's consciousness began to fade. In that fleeting moment, she held onto her resolve, vowing to relearn everything she had lost. The knowledge of her true self, her origins, and her untapped potential slipped away, buried deep within the recesses of her unconscious mind.
