Chapter Thirty-Four: Glitching

/Jeff's point of view\

"Good morning." Aziraphale greeted me as I entered the bookshop.

"Good morning, Zira." I replied, putting my bag on a hook and taking on a more human appearance.

"I'm expecting Anathema to drop by today and a few students are probably going to come looking for books to use on research projects." Aziraphale informed me, moving Autumn (his owlcat) to his other shoulder so he could put a book back on one of the shelves.

"Cool." I replied, taking a stack of books to put back in their places. Crowley stumbled up the stairs from the basement forge, hungover and groaning as he had to readjust to the lighting. He stopped next to me, clearly confused as he stood slumped with his forked tongue out.

"Jeff...? Izzat you?" Crowley flicked his tongue a little and wrinkled his nose.

"Yeah?" I replied, concerned.

"Are you doin' alright? You smell ill." Crowley said as Aziraphale handed him a cup of coffee.

"I don't feel ill. I feel just fine."

"Hunh. Well, take care of yourself and try not to get sick." Crowley sulked away, draping himself across one of the many couches scattered around the massive library.

I sniffed at my skin a little bit, not detecting what Crowley picked up. I shrugged it off, thinking almost nothing of it.

As Aziraphale predicted, several human college students came in and asked where a specific topic was in the library. I led them to it, walking up the ladder with my tentacles poking out of my sleeves to grab the books so I wouldn't have to let go of the ladder. I slid down with a stack and put the heavy books down on the table, hiding my tentacles from the sight of the humans.

"Thank you." A female smiled before her pleasant expression faded into fear and concern.

"MONSTER." A male shouted. I back up, not understanding what had happened to make him say that.

Crowley came running, his sunglasses slightly askew on his face and his massive black wings visible on his back. He skidded to a stop in front of me and I retreated into the bathroom, catching sight of myself in the mirror.

I was glitching like there was no tomorrow, in between human, angel, demon, female, male, and fallen angel. It scared me. I couldn't stop it. I curled up in the bathtub, involuntary tears slipping down my cheeks as I watched my hands glitch. I squeezed my eyes shut and screamed.

What came out was not a scream. It was a melody that I knew as a lullaby that God sang at night in Heaven. It was louder than my thoughts and feelings. I stopped trying to scream or say something, causing the melody to stop.

With shaky hands, I got out my phone and called Fae.

"Hello?" Fae's voice asked. I sniffled and sobbed slightly. "Jeff, are you alright?" I scrambled to text him while still on the call.

Me: I'm

Me: I'm glitching

"Oh. Do you need me to come find you?" Fae asked.

Me: I'm scared. I wanna go home.

"I'm coming, baby, just hold on." Fae said soothingly. "Is Crowley nearby?"

Me: probably

"Good, good. Is Aziraphale nearby?"

Me: he's at the bathroom door, knocking gently.

"Okay, let him in." Fae instructed me. I stretched a tentacle to open the door and Aziraphale and Crowley came in to find me glitching, shaking and crying with my phone in hand.

Crowley sat in the bathtub with me and Aziraphale knelt next to me.

"Might be time for a gross reset, huh?" Crowley asked. I shook my head no, curling further into myself.

"Be nice to the poor dear." Aziraphale scolded. "It might be a system overload on his body itself because of how much has happened to it, it might be the fact that this form no longer fits, it might be that he's just a little bit sick."

"Hello, Aziraphale and Crowley." Fae said to the couple over the phone, causing them to startle. "I'm currently on my way to get Jeff. He wants to go home. I hope you don't mind."

"Oh that's fine, it's not his fault he's having issues with maintaining one appearance. It's almost the end of his shift for today anyways." Aziraphale assured Fae kindly, his wings fluttering slightly out of habit. Crowley shrugged slightly, a concerned frown on his face as he gently pulled my glasses off to rescue them from cracking as the glitching slowly destroyed my clothing. Neither of them knew what to do about my predicament.

Fae appeared in the doorway of the bathroom, panting slightly as though he ran through the streets and the stacks of books to find me. He picked me up out of the bathtub and took my glasses from Crowley, carrying me out to the bus stop. He almost never drives my truck. In fact, he avoids it as much as he can.

The bus pulled up and we got on, leaving a dollar for the driver in the money box. I watched the rain cascade down the windows as I clung to Fae in his lap, an overwhelming feeling of pure exhaustion coating my anxious thoughts. I let myself drift into a sweet unconsciousness as Fae gently ran his fingers through my hair.

I woke up in a cold sweat, tucked in bed at home. Fae was laying down next to me on the covers, reading quietly as his phone blew up with texts.

"Fae?" I asked weakly.

"Good morning, dumbass. Lucifer's trying to get your attention and I'm blatantly ignoring him because he didn't listen when I told him that you're running a fever of over 120° Fahrenheit and were sleeping. I know it's a gutsy move, but he's not the king anymore. What's he gonna do against a pissy green witch in the medical field who will kick his little blonde ass and throw him into the sun so hard his dick falls off?" Fae chuckled cruelly. "Anyways...want some water?"
