Chapter Forty-Seven: I Kill a Man(this is normal, relax)

-Alastor's point of view-

It's been almost two years since I was redeemed.

I finally got my first assignment after stubbornly pestering the angels in charge of me. I was bored and didn't like being in Heaven at all. It's too cold for my liking.

I checked the file and went to the location first without a glance at the name, picture, or description. It was a house in Alabama, not far from the border of Louisiana. The shouts of a grown adult man emerged from within the home, causing deep suspicion to spark in me.

I peeked into the house to see a little boy with dark skin being beaten with a whip by a white man that looked to be around 300 pounds. I looked down at the file again, alarmed and angry, trying to figure out if I was supposed to be watching the child or the man.

I was watching the child. And the child happened to be Ben, my first grandchild. I wasn't supposed to stop the beatings according to the file, but I decided enough was enough. No child, especially one in my family deserves to be beaten.

I threw open the door, hiding my wings and making my clothes into more normalized clothes instead of robes. The man reeked of alcohol. His wife was curled in the corner, sobbing and bleeding from many cuts.

"Who th' fuck are you an' why'd you break into my house?" The man asked, his speech slurred because he was drunk.

"I am here to save Ben, you sicko. He is of my family and you are not permitted to commit such atrocities to a mere child. The fact that you beat that poor woman and this child is enough to tell me that you need to go to prison." I told him, shoving him away from Ben. I threw him to the ground, which he thought was impressive because of how thin I was compared to him.

"You're lucky if I don't kill you here and now, sir." I said in my customer service voice, smiling sweetly down at him as a knife appeared in my hand behind my back. Ben skittered away, smearing his blood across the floor.

"You wouldn'"

"Oh, I would." I said, stabbing him in the stomach. I stabbed him again and again and again, eventually leaving the knife in his forehead. I wiped the blood off my hands onto my pants before going to find something to cover the man with so Ben or the woman couldn't see it.

"It's alright now, ma'am. He won't hurt you anymore." I told her as I felt the weight of my wings fall away. I looked down to see blackened feathers falling from my back. In fact, I'm pretty sure that my atrocity against him caused me to go back to my preferred form. "Let's get you cleaned up and I'll dispose of the body and I'll take Ben and be on my merry way. I can't go back to Hell just yet, but I can sure as day be a good guardian to this little one if you don't mind." I rambled as I picked her up and sat her on the table. "Where's the first aid kit?"

"Upstairs bathroom. On the counter." She replied, her voice almost gone. I went and got it before cleaning each cut carefully and patching her up. I did the same with Ben and I kissed a newly bandaged gash on his forehead better, earning a hesitant smile from the little boy. I told the woman(whose name was Sarah) all about how Ben ended up with her, from the day he was kidnapped.

"Alright. Thank you for helping me. Go ahead and take Ben. I think his mother will be happy to see him still alive, though traumatized." Sarah said.

"Are you sure you'll be fine?" I asked.

"Yeah. Especially since I have someone who wanted me to get a divorce because he loved me." Sarah told me. "I will be fine, sir."

"Please, just call me Alastor." I used the mirror that was hung by the front door, adjusting my appearance to match my preferred demonic form.

"Thank you...Alastor." Sarah said.

"You're welcome, Sarah. Come, Ben, let's go back to my home in New Orleans." I said, picking Ben up with almost no effort. The fact he didn't weigh anything to me made me a bit fuckin' pissed. Oh look, I can cuss again. Nice.

I walked out the door after Ben waved goodbye to Sarah and we got some of his things, including his plush octopus that he had since he was born(Mr Squishy as Ben called him). Down the street we went as I tried to summon myself into the pentagram in the basement of my NOLA home. I eventually got it to work and Ben clung to me as we disappeared from the Alabama street and appeared in my basement.

"Alright, I wasn't expecting it to be that hard, but okay." I put Ben down and nudged him to the outside the circle, flinching when my finger burned because it was almost over the edge of the circle. "Can you break the circle for a moment, I can't get out. I'm not as powerful as I used to be."

Ben obediently put his foot on the circle after I explained how to break the circle that I had burnt into the concrete floor. I walked out of it and led him up the stairs and into my parlor.

"Alright, let's get you some food and water and I'll put your stuff away." I hummed. "Do you want to sleep in my room upstairs or do you want a room to yourself?"

"I don't know..." Ben said, surprised I gave him a choice.

"How 'bout I put your things in the room next to mine and if you have nightmares, you come into my room and I'll let you lay next to me? Sound fair?" I asked, crouching down to eye level with my grandson.

"Yeah." Ben nodded, his cute little smile appearing with his dimples.

"Good. Now, let's see what we have in the fridge, shall we?"
