Chapter Five: Happy Birthday, Bitch

:Stitches's point of view:

"Happy birthday, Mercy." I greeted Mercy as she wandered down the stairs for breakfast. I was fully dressed in my band t-shirt and faded black jeans and she was wearing a nightgown, sweats, and one(1)sock. Her wild red and black hair was out of their braids and sticking up in odd directions. She was not ready for today at all.

"Thank you and good morning." She said cheerfully, punctuating it with a yawn. "What time is it?"

"Five o'one. You have a good internal clock as we have to get to the art classroom early. We need to be there in less than an hour. Ms. Cox wants to talk to us." I said.

"Oh shoot, I should go get dressed, shouldn't I? I'll be right back." She said, retreating back up the stairs. She came back in a green sweater and jeans, struggling to put on one of her sneakers.

Dad served up breakfast to us, planting a kiss on our foreheads after pushing our bangs up. I shared a smile with my sister before digging into my breakfast.

One by one, the rest of our family came blearily stumbling into the kitchen and wishing a happy birthday to Mercy and good morning to the rest of us.

"In about a year, you're next." Mercy said ominously at me. I shivered as her eyes glowed slightly.

"That wasn't at all scary, no." I said sarcastically. "C'mon, we gotta go."

"Alright. Love you all! See you later." Mercy said, hugging the triplets and our parents goodbye before grabbing her bag.

"Bye y'all." I said, doing the same. We got in the car and drove to the school and I led her into the darkened art classroom before flipping on the lights. Calypso had been sitting in the darkness, working clay into pottery in complete silence.

"Hey, Cal. We're here a bit early. I hope that's alright." Mercy said, sitting next to her girlfriend.

"Hi, Mercy. How'd you sleep?" Calypso asked softly.

"Oh, like the dead. I'm not technically dead, but y'know, it was a good sleep." Mercy replied with a little chuckle. "How'd you sleep? Did you sleep at all?"

"No, I didn't but it was my choice. Dad let me help him last night on the full moon. We had to get the rainwater charged with crystals and intentions and the moon itself." Calypso explained. She hadn't seemed to see me yet, being too busy with her clay. I got out my canvas. "Hello, Stitches."

She hadn't even turned around.

"What the fuck." I said, awestruck as the canvas slipped from my fingers.

"Language, my good dude." Nathan said from behind Calypso's long skirt.

"jESUS CRUST."

"Did I fucking stutter, my man?" Nathan asked, his red eye glowing unnaturally.

"No, but you two are so creepy all by yourselves. How the hell did Jeff and Fae, two normal-ish demons, raise you two creepy people."

"Is your canvas okay, dude?" Mercy asked. I picked it up and examined it.

"Yeah, thankfully." I replied, putting it up on an easel.

"Good." I wandered past Calypso and Mercy on my way to get the paint, taking a glance at Calypso's face. Her blue, rain-drop-shaped eye in the center of her forehead glowed faintly, centered completely in its socket. Her other two eyes were closed as her hands made a clay flowerpot.

I stared at her a little bit out of the corner of my eye as I collected my paint. She didn't move and eventually her eye closed, letting her open her other two eyes as well like normal.

"Alrighty then." I said softly.

-----

"Hey guys. So today we gotta do something a bit different than normal. We're supposed to be going on field trips with the juniors and seniors all through the year. Today is the first one and we're going to the human world. So, I was wondering if you could help out with the shapeshifting techniques for the students who don't know how yet. Can you do that?" Ms. Cox asked, pushing her horn-rimmed black and silver glasses up her nose.

"Sure we can." Calypso said instantly. "Are we altering into humans?"

"Yes. I know you three have human forms already, so I'm trusting that you'll be able to show off how most people are supposed to look as humans." She replied.

We melted into our human forms.

My head felt lighter without the red antlers that normally adorned my head. I had less sight advantage because my extra six eyes had disappeared. My tail was gone.

Mercy had dark hair with reddish roots all done up in her braids. Her ears, the flopped right ear and the regular left ear, no longer stood proudly atop her head and her eyes turned an electric blue. Her extra arms and eyes disappeared. Her tail no longer sat at the base of her back.

Calypso's hair remained a vivid purple color, but her roots were black now. Her medium brown skin lost that reddish glow. Her third eye was just a tattoo now, but it moved regardless. Her tail disappeared into her skirt and her ears shortened, becoming much less pointed.

"Exactly what I'm talking about. We're visiting two locations this time. New Orleans, Louisiana, the capital of Voodoo and Night Vale. Both of which we can be a little odd-looking in, but we don't wanna take chances." Ms. Cox informed us.

"Are we bringing adults?" Mercy asked.

"Oh yes, we are. In fact, Mr. Aracane-Glass and Jeff decided to tag along. No one really knows Louisiana quite like Alastor that I know of and he felt friendly when he called me at 3 am. Jeff just wants to see Night Vale and I didn't give a shit as long as he subbed for me for a day." Ms. Cox chuckled, bumping her elbow into my arm teasingly.
