Chapter 49
Ann and Mitch, after spending hours in the library, decide to take a walk through the castle gardens. The crickets sing their nighttime song and fireflies flutter around, blinking lazily in the darkness.
"Mitch?" Ann asks. He looks down at her and she takes his hand.
"Yeah?"
"I've just been thinking about everything that's happened. Julie and Libby dying, our fight with Herobrine, Notch turning us into angels... it's unreal. I thought I would live my immortal life going from master to master, never living in peace or happiness," she explains. She kicks a stone across the path and watches it fly away from her foot.
Mitch remains silent for a moment, looking at the billions of tiny stars in the sky.
"If you weren't here, I think I would've left already. Left the city and never gone back to another kingdom," Ann finishes.
"Where would you have gone?" he asks quietly.
"I don't know. I can't exactly live a normal, mundane life because of my wings and the fact that I'm an angel, but I might've gotten a farm on the outskirts of some town and hidden away from everyone."
Mitch takes her hands in his and looks into her pale blue eyes. As he speaks, he gently tucks a loose strand of blonde hair behind her ear.
"Please don't leave. I want you here. I need you here."
She smiles and kisses him gently.
"I'm not going to leave. I can't leave you."
"I'm glad. Now we can live our immortal lives together in peace and happiness," Mitch says.
He grins and picks her up bridal style. She giggles and nestles against him. Mitch carries her to a bench and they sit down. She cuddles against him as they watch the sky, the only sound being that of the crickets.
"I'm sorry about everything that happened with your siblings and Herobrine. It shouldn't have happened, but I'm glad that it brought us here," Mitch says finally, breaking the veil of silence that had fallen over them.
"I would've died without you, Mitch," she whispers. They grow quiet again, simply enjoying each other's company.
Eventually, Ann's breathing becomes steady. Mitch looks at her sleeping form and smiles lightly. He carefully picks her up so he doesn't wake her and walks back to the castle. When he reaches her bedroom, he lays her down carefully in bed.
Mitch is about to go back to his room, but she looks so cute and innocent when she sleeps that he can't help it. He climbs into bed next to her and pulls her close, falling asleep with her head under his chin.
