Chapter 42
Quintana comes down the hallway, and by the look on her face, all of them know that the news she has to tell isn't good. Adam has shown up and is standing a short distance away from everyone else.
"Should I start with the good news, the bad news, or the worst news?" she asks.
"Bad news," Jerome says. They all nod in agreement.
"Well, the bad news is that all of the demons that are living in this castle right now have demons curse, which basically means that more and more evil things are going to find you and kill you off one by one," Quin states. "Notch told me."
"You're telling us that Notch knew we had a curse and he didn't tell us until Julie was dead and Libby's in critical condition?" Ian demands, her volume rising.
"He made a mistake. None of this has exactly been easy on him!" Quintana shoots back.
"What's the good news?" Mitch asks, changing the subject.
"There's a way of getting rid of demons curse, and it involves changing all the demons into angels. Notch says he can do two at a time, and he thinks he may be able to have everyone changed by the end of the week."
They smile, but don't cheer. The worst news is still to come.
"So, what's the worst news?" Khali asks, her speech filled with fear. Jerome looks over and squeezes her shoulder gently. Quintana's face falls and her voice breaks.
"It's Libby. She's probably not going to make it through the night, and if she does, then she'll die tomorrow. My magic isn't advanced enough to heal a wound like that." Tears spring to her eyes, and she turns to the door of the hospital ward. "It would be wise if everyone went and said their goodbyes now."
Ann clutches Mitch's sleeve, tears welling up in her pale blue eyes. He wraps his arms around her as she cries into his shoulder, his chin resting on her head.
Adam goes up to Ian and places his hand on the other angel's shoulder, his hazel eyes filled with understanding. Jason leans against the nearby wall, his head hanging.
"Isn't there anything we can do? Are angels that useless now?" Ian demands. Adam nods, his face red and blotchy. Not a single tear fills his hazel eyes.
"What happened to Quintana's healing magic?" the archer continues, looking to his sister.
"I don't know where that much energy came from, but I can't do it again. Not now, at least. I need to rest," the mudkip says.
"We're going to say goodbye first. Come in with Libby's siblings," Adam says softly. Ian nods and the angels all enter the ward.
Libby looks worse than any of them had imagined. She's completely pale and shaking, her blue eyes filled with pain. Her wings are stretched out beside her, the edges draping off her bed. Bandages cover her wound and empty glass bottles litter the ground, reminding them of Quintana's desperate attempts.
"Hi," Libby whispers, managing the slightest of smiles.
"Hey, we just came to say goodbye," Quintana says softly. Libby nods.
"I've accepted it. I'm not afraid."
In turn, the angels all give her a gentle hug and say a tearful goodbye. One by one, they leave the room and wait in the hallway as Ian and the other demons walk in.
Mitch looks over at Adam, whose face is void of all expression. No tears fall from his eyes.
"Have you cried at all since Julie?" the angel asks. Adam shakes his head in response.
"I don't have any tears left to lose. I'm all out of grief. My heart can't handle it."
Mitch nods and sits down on the floor, his heart breaking for his brother. Soft crying comes from in the ward, making his sorrow grow more intense. One question keeps running through his mind.
Why does this have to happen to us?
