Chapter 39
Jason stands beside Notch's throne and watches as everyone finishes getting their wounds cleaned and dressed. He's covered in bandages and his left arm is in a sling from a sprain that he obtained during battle. His mind continues to loop through the words Notch had said during the battle.
He lies atop a broken throne...
Why didn't Notch tell them that Herobrine was his brother? That information is too important to forget about, so why didn't he tell them?
At that moment, Notch wanders into the castle. He sits down on his throne, completely silent.
"Notch, why didn't you tell us that Herobrine was your brother?" Jason blurts, unable to hold the question back any longer. Notch sighs.
"You may not understand it, but I have a good reason."
"What's that reason?" the angel urges. "We could have changed him if you had told us."
At this point, everyone is listening.
"That's exactly the reason, Jason. If I had told you, you wouldn't have fought him. You would have tried to find a way of bringing him out of the darkness. You would have hesitated. If any of these happened, Herobrine would have taken the opportunity to kill you. Herobrine may have been my brother, but you are my children. I wanted you to live so badly that I was willing to sacrifice Herobrine. Besides, he was already too far into the darkness. I, like you, am immortal and can only die in battle. Herobrine had been alive for a thousand years in the darkness, and there's no way you can save anyone if they're that far gone," Notch explains.
None of the angels even try to argue. Everything their king had said was true.
"Everyone should get to bed," Quintana says. The angels and demons murmur in agreement and head to their rooms.

Adam wakes up screaming, cold sweat drenching his shirt and tears wetting his face. As soon as he had drifted off to sleep, he had seen Julie die again. Her last words echoed in his head like the vibrations of a recently rung bell.
I love you. I love them. Tell my siblings that I love them. I'm hanging up my sword. I'm done.
Those are the exact words she had said during their morning by the angel statue. He hadn't even considered that she might die. Now, she's gone and there's nothing he can do.
"Are you okay?" someone asks from outside. Adam tries to speak, but it comes out as a croak. The door opens and Quintana and Ty step in, their faces filled with concern.
"Nightmare?" Quintana asks. Adam nods, hugging the blankets to his chest.
"Nobody has had a restful night tonight. Every single one of the demons has woken up at least once tonight," Ty sighs.
A cry is heard echoing down the hall and Ty's face falls, his royal purple eyes reflecting sorrow and exhaustion.
"That would be Justina."
He leaves the room. Quintana watches Adam for a moment before going to the door.
"Wait here. I'm getting someone."
The Captain of the Angels waits for less than two minutes before Quintana comes back with Jason.
"He's going to stay with you in case this happens again. I have to comfort Wolfie," she explains. At that moment, howling rings out and Quintana dashes off.
"Get some sleep, bud. I'll be right here," Jason says, smiling slightly.
"Don't you need sleep?" Adam asks. His voice comes out scratchy and uneven, but at the moment he doesn't have the energy to care. Jason shakes his head.
"I'll be fine. You need sleep."
Adam lies back down on his bed and falls asleep, feeling safe with his guardian angel.
