Chapter 22
Mitch hears Ann stir, which wakes him. Still a big groggy, he stands up and goes to her bedside.
"Where am I?" she mumbles to herself.
"Notch's castle," Mitch replies. He feels sort of like Gandalf standing over Frodo in Rivendell, but he doesn't mention his geek fantasies out loud.
"Mitch?!" Ann exclaims. She turns to him too quickly and groans in pain. The angel's face creases with worry and he sits down on the bed beside her.
"Are you okay?" he asks. She nods, holding her stomach. Her wings are stretched out, and Mitch is careful not to sit on them. He knows from having brothers how painful that can be.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. I didn't know you where there. You scared me," Ann says. She chuckles lightly. "My stomach still aches where Herobrine sliced me."
"Sorry about scaring you and your wound. I wasn't exactly supposed to come in here, but I kind of ignored Quintana," Mitch explains. "Oh, uh, in case you don't know, she's the-"
"I know her. I woke up when she pushed my shoulder back into place. Why are you here though?" Ann asks.
Mitch hesitates, wondering whether he should say why he's really there, besides the fact that Jerome convinced him to come in. The demon waits for his response.
"Come on, just tell me," Ann urges. Eventually, the angel responds.
"Because I wanted to."
A flicker of happiness crosses Ann's face, but it disappears so quickly that Mitch believes he's imagining it.
"The last time we talked, I was being released from your dungeon. I was in your dungeon because I'm dangerous. So why do you keep finding me?" Ann asks. She props herself up on her good arm, watching the angel with interest.
Mitch falters again, this time not knowing what to say. He knows that he keeps finding her because he wants to see her, but he also knows that they haven't spent enough time together for her to become his girlfriend.
And besides, Mitch thinks, Notch would disown me if I started dating a demon.
She notices his expression and doesn't push the question more.
"Tell me about you. What's it like living with Herobrine?" Mitch asks, changing the subject. Ann shrugs, her face falling.
"My siblings are the only people I've ever been close to. Herobrine is more of a master than a father, and I've been forced to do his dirty work for years. Before this, I was in a different castle. There, they mostly raise baby demons, training them to fly, fight, etcetera. When we're seven, we're shipped off to whoever bought us. It's a pretty miserable life for an immortal."
"You were sold? Angels are born and raised by their fathers or mothers, who are usually Lords and Ladies of castles. We were all born angels..." Mitch pauses, the image of Ty coming into his mind. "Well, everyone except one of us."
"It's Ty, isn't it?" she asks.
"How did you know?"
"His wings. I saw him that night you were evacuating the city and the others were fighting you, and I realized that there was no way an Ender could have been born an angel," Ann says quietly. "Justina's an Ender too. She was born in the End and then sent to the Overworld. It's odd, how when they're made into angels they lose the Ender half of their face and that purple flame eye."
Mitch nods.
"Ty had two flame eyes. Sometimes, when he gets really mad or fierce, they turn back to their original state."
"That happens to Justina sometimes if she's really, really mad, but only one of her eyes has ever stayed like a flame," Ann says.
The two lapse into silence. Finally, Mitch asks the question that had been bugging him the entire time they had been talking.
"Ann, do you want to go back to Herobrine?"
She hesitates, then shakes her head.
"I don't want to go back, but I don't really have a choice. If he finds out that I'm alive and with the angels, he'll kill me and this time, make sure I'm dead. I almost have to go back, and the only situation where I wouldn't have to would be if Herobrine got overthrown. I hope he doesn't kill one of my siblings..."
Mitch sighs deeply and is about to say something when the door bursts open.
"Mitch, Ann is expected to return to the castle as soon as she's healed," Jerome says, his fuzzy paws clutching the door handle.
"How did they find out that she isn't dead?" Mitch demands. Ann's face goes completely pale.
Jerome pauses, and Mitch can almost swear that his face is red under all his fur.
"I may or may not have talked to Khali."
