Chapter 20

Adam carries Ann to a spare bedroom and gently lays her down on the bed. Ty and Jason soon return with Notch, Mitch, and Quintana. Jerome tags along, insisting on staying with Mitch.

"Jason explained what happened. I'm guessing you want Quintana to heal her?" Notch asks. Adam nods, looking down at the unconscious girl.

"She is allowed to be here, isn't she?" Adam asks. Notch nods.

"I have a feeling that this demon is different than the rest. I saw bits and pieces of the battle. I saw her standing back."

Quintana begins to brew some potions, and Notch is about to lift the bottom of her shirt to inspect her wound when he turns to the boys.

"We all need to leave for the sake of her privacy. You aren't allowed to be in here while Quintana is healing her."

The boys all whine, especially Mitch, but Notch shoves them out. He follows and closes the door behind them.

Quintana gently pulls off Ann's shirt and grabs the healing potions from the brewing stand. She grabs some cloths and places them on the bed next to the potions.

"This might hurt a bit," Quintana whispers. She places one hand on the back of Ann's arm and the other on the front of her shoulder. She takes a deep breath and shoves her shoulder back into place. The demon yells, waking up from her unconscious state.

"Shh, it's okay!" Quintana says soothingly. Ann breathes heavily, sweat glistening on her forehead. The angel wipes the blood from Ann's shoulders and stomach before putting healing potion on them. The gashes turn to red marks, which will take longer to heal. She puts a cast on the demon's shoulder and hands her a spare shirt.

"How did I get here?" Ann asks, breathing heavily from fear and pain.

"Adam brought you here. He saw what happened and figured he could save your life," Quintana replies. "You should probably get some rest. You were in pretty rough shape. I'll come back a bit later and put some healing magic on that shoulder."

"Thank you. I'm Ann, by the way," the demon girl says.

"Quintana. And you're welcome."

The mudkip smiles, and Ann smiles back. She lays back on the pillow and closes her eyes, and Quintana leaves the room.

"Is she okay?" Mitch asks anxiously as the door closes behind his sister. The mudkip nods.

"She'll be alright. She just needs to rest."

Mitch sighs in relief, and Jerome nudges him and winks jokingly. Mitch punches him back lightly.

"Thanks Quin," Adam says. She nods and walks back to her room. Adam walks to the throne room and sits on the armrest of Notch's throne, filled with mixed emotions.

I saved a demon. I've been taught all my life that demons are evil, he thinks. But I also saved a girl from getting killed by the person she was raised by. I did this for Mitch, who would've been heartbroken if she had died, even though I disapprove his crush on a demon...

Mitch paces around the hallway outside of Ann's room.

Why did Adam save her? He's completely anti-demon, the angel thinks.

Mitch runs to the throne room with Jerome right behind him. They see Adam perched on Notch's throne, holding his head.

"Adam?"

He looks up.

"Thank you for saving her. I don't know why you did it, but I can't repay you enough," Mitch says, grinning. Adam grins back, and the angel in plaid tackles him in a hug.

"You know I'm still against this demon crush thing you have?" Adam chuckles. Mitch nods.

"Yeah, I didn't expect that to change."

The angel flies back down the hallway with Jerome while Adam is left on Notch's throne, grinning.

"Mitch, go check on her," Jerome urges as soon as they reach Ann's door again.

"But Quintana told me not to..." Mitch replies, every part of him wanting to ignore his sister's warning.

"Just do it!" Jerome says, giving his brother's shoulders a slight squeeze. Mitch looks at him skeptically.

"You aren't going to go out injure a demon so we can bring her here, are you? That isn't the reason you want me to disobey Quintana?"

"No!" Jerome exclaims. "I just want you to be the first one she sees."

Mitch smiles lightly and slowly enters the room. Ann's sleeping peacefully, her black wings draped over the bed. The angel sits on a chair, watching her sleeping form. Eventually, Mitch feels himself begin to drift off.
