Chapter 12

Ty sits on his bed, staring at the wall. He ran into Justina again today, but he couldn't kill her. Part of him, the part that he had shoved away a long time ago, stops him from killing her or any demon, for that matter.

"Ty? Are you awake?" the unmistakeable voice of Notch asks.

"Come in."

He walks in and sits beside the angel on the bed. Ty continues to stare at the wall, not meeting Notch's eyes.

"Are you okay?" the king asks. Ty shakes his head.

"I can't kill demons. Some part of me refuses to let me kill the demons." Notch is like a father to him, and he has never minded telling him how he's feeling. Besides Adam, he's the only one Ty can do this with.

"I know you can't kill demons. There's a reason for that," Notch says. The angel nods.

"It's because I was a demon."

Notch nods, and his eyes travel from the wall to Ty.

"Why did you come join us, besides the fact that you wanted to be free? I've been thinking about this for a long time, and I haven't been able to come up with an answer. I never bothered to ask, but curiosity is gnawing at me."

"I wasn't meeting Herobrine's standards. I was supposed to kill at least three people a day as a six year old. I was lucky if I got one. It started with spending nights in a cell in the dungeon, then it went to whippings. Eventually, I was so sick of the abuse that I ran away. When I landed on your lawn, it was partially because I was too exhausted to fly, but it was also because a small part of me was hoping that one of the angels would kill me so I wouldn't have to be scared anymore. I knew Herobrine was getting new demons. He had told me before that he was going to replace me. The current demons that he has are replacements for me," Ty rambles, feeling pressure in his chest building up. "They were my age, but they were stronger." All the memories that Ty had been storing away and hiding had just come out, and there was nothing he could do to change it.

Mitch backs away from Ty's door, his chest feeling uncomfortably tight. Ty didn't deserve that. Nobody deserves that.

He places the food that he was supposed to give Ty onto the floor, the platter keeping the actual food from the thin carpet. The angel flies as quickly as he can to the dungeon, stopping in front of Ann's cell.

"What are you doing here, Mitch?" she asks. "It's been a while since you were last down here."

"Why do you stick around with Herobrine?" he demands. Her eyes widen before growing cold.

"Why do you care?"

"Because I hear that he abuses his demons."

Ann's face fills with pain, and she wraps her black wings around her body.

"I don't want to talk about it. Why would I tell an angel anyway?" Her attempt at sounding fierce fails, and for once she actually seems vulnerable.

Mitch looks to Libby, who's fast asleep. He turns back to Ann and his face softens, his brown eyes meeting her pale blue ones.

"I'm curious. Why don't you leave?"

"It's not exactly easy to leave family, okay? The idea of being in another home, especially since I was already moved once when I was seven, scares me," Ann whispers.

"Why are you moved around so much?" Mitch asks, sitting down outside her cell. She hesitates, her eyes squeezed shut. Finally, she speaks.

"Demons are like cattle. You buy some, and they're yours. You raise them, and they do your bidding. If you don't want them anymore, you sell them to a different person. You need to replace demons if they die, right?"

The angel shakes his head, trying to process the information. He had never imagined their lives like this before.

Mitch leaves the dungeon quickly, his heart beating fast.

What can he possibly do to help this situation?
