Chapter 5

"You..." I mumbled under my breath hoping that Daryl would forget about what I said.

"Is that a compliment sunshine?" I knew that Daryl was smirking and I wanted to punch myself in the face, what perfect timing that Dixon had.

"Enjoy it, it's the last one you're getting since you let me freeze to death!" I pushed myself off the log and turned so that I was facing him.

He seemed startled, but that was quickly pushed away by anger, "Me? Didn't I say that you should be in the cot? Hell, I even slept on the floor for ya, but YOU were the stubborn one that wanted to sleep on the floor too!" He pinched the bridge of his noise in frustration and stomped back off toward his tent.

"It's your tent! I was only being polite!" I screamed after him, but I knew he didn't care.

I slumped down onto the log right before Glenn came walking over with a sleeping bag over his shoulder. "Here you go. The last one." He smiled and tossed it down to me.

I nodded in response and thanked him. The sleeping bag rested by my feet and I groaned in frustration. Hopefully Daryl wouldn't be in the tent when I got there to put the sleeping bag in.

Pulling the sleeping bag over my shoulder I headed over to the tent and pulled the flap open, and of course there sat Daryl Dixon sharpening his arrows.

"Yo, fucktard. Guess what I got, a sleeping bag," I raised it up to make sure he saw it, "that means you get your own bag and we don't gotta freeze." He grunted in response and pushed passed me when I set down the bag.

Fine, be like that.

I decided to write in my journal that Beth had given to me. She told me that it had helped her ever since this whole hell had started and I decided to go with her word.

It was a plain blue spiral notebook making it impossible for me to write in since I was left handed. On the back of the cover were the words, "It's a zombie apocalypse and I know you're curious, but stay out please", except the words were smudged the writing wasn't quite so legible any more.

Day 1:

I'm hoping this will help.

Maybe my nightmares will get better, maybe my problems will disappear, but sadly we know that's not going to happen. Ever since this apocalypse has happened my nightmares have worsened and now I have to share a tent with this annoying human being called Daryl. I fear that he may wake up to my crying and screaming and that he'll ask me what's wrong. Thankfully, he's not that caring, and maybe he won't even care.

Every night I'm reminded of my father. He would come home late at night and whip me across the back with his belt. Other times he would kick me and spit insults at me or use me for his own pleasure.

I don't want to go into detail. Sorry.

I closed the book and sighed. I never liked writing about how I felt and this was hard for me. The pen ink was all over my left hand and some of the words were smeared across the page. Well, at least now people probably won't be able to read it if they tried. I unzipped my bag and stuffed the notebook on the bottom, sadly, this was the only good hiding space I had.

There were only a few more hours of day left and I had decided to walk around camp hoping that someone had something for me to do.

Carol was the first person that I saw, she sat outside washing clothes and I decided to ask if she needed help.

"Hey Carol, need help?" She stopped scrubbing the flannel shirt she had in her hand and then shook her head.

"Oh no, I'm doing alright. Thanks for asking though." She reverted her attention back to the shirt and began scrubbing again.

The next person on my list was Rick, and I decided to talk to him about something else than helping.

Rick was behind the house arguing to Lori about something so I lingered a few feet away from them until they were finished. Lori stormed off and I took this time to talk to him.

"So, I'm leaving either tonight or tomorrow. Probably tomorrow, but I just wanted to let you know."

He sighed in frustration and ran a hand through his curly hair. I knew he was stressed and me running away wasn't helping, but I wanted to let him know since groups weren't really my thing.

"Vogue..." He trailed off and I knew he didn't want me to leave.

I shrugged, "Sorry."

"Stay for today, please. Think about it, maybe you'll wanna stay."

"I dunno, groups aren't really my thing." I kicked at some loose dirt trying to ignore his sad eyes.

"I know that, but people here care about you, running off isn't going to be easy on them."

"But I barely know them."

"I know, but think about it, it's almost night so get some rest and decide tomorrow night." With that said he walked back to the front of the house. His words replayed in my mind and I decided to give him a chance, I would wait until tomorrow night.

I decided to look for Carl so I could clear my head and talk to someone that was still young and fun.

He was sitting on the porch steps and I ran up to him and hit his shoulder, "TAG!" I yelled at him before running away.

He quickly caught on because before I knew it he was running behind me with huge smile on his face.

"That's not fair!" He finally ended up tagging me and this went on until we were both exhausted and gasping for air. We slumped down to the ground and laid there for awhile, his head resting on my stomach while my head rested on the grass.

After awhile Rick came up to us and I could tell he was happy seeing Carl finally having some fun.

"Dinner's ready, I believe it's squirrel, again." I knew everyone was getting sick of squirrel but I was just glad that we actually had something to eat. Carl removed his head off my stomach and ran to the fire where most people were sitting. I got up and walked by Rick's side until we reached the fire.

"Thank you." I already knew what he was talking about so I simply nodded back. I knew he just wanted Carl to be happy and that's exactly what happened, today he was just a normal kid.

Carol passed around bowls filled with squirrel meat, today there wasn't as much as usual but I just shrugged it off and noticed that Dale was missing.

"Carol, could I have another bowl? I wanna go bring one to Dale." She nodded and thanked me for thinking about him before she handed me another bowl. I walked back towards the RV where I could see the faint outline of Dale's shadow.

I awkwardly tried to climb up the ladder with the two bowls, but eventually made it to the top.

"Hey there Dale, brought you some food. I thought you would be hungry." I handed him the bowl and soon it was already gone.

"Damn, did you inhale it?" I laughed and looked out at the area around us. The sun was on the horizon and the sky was a mix of orange and pink and very few clouds were in the air.

"How are you and Daryl doing?" I shook my head.

"I don't know, I barely know him and he's confusing the shit out of me."

"That's Daryl for ya."

"Yeah I guess."

"He'll get better, I think there maybe hope for him as long as you're around." Those words instantly reminded me of my words that I had said to Rick. Tonight I would decide if I wanted to leave or stay, I wouldn't wait till tomorrow, I wanted to decide now.

I sat on top of the RV thinking about it for awhile. The sky was now dark and almost everybody had settled down and were going to bed. Finally, I decided to stay, unless someone tried something with me or aggravated me in such a way that it made me want to leave.

Dale's bowl was sitting by his chair and I said goodbye and took the bowl back into the house. The house was dark and I tried my best to be quiet since I assumed everyone was sleeping.

I placed the dishes in the sink and headed back outside toward my tent. The flap was zipped and I awkwardly stood there bickering to myself whether that meant, "Come in we're open", or "Get lost we're closed".

I decided to head in since it was technically my tent as well. When I entered Daryl was already laying in his sleeping bag, his crossbow was laying by his head in case anything happened.

I couldn't tell whether he was asleep or not so I tried to ignore him and just go to sleep.

I unzipped the bag as quietly as I could and zipped the bag bag up once I was in.

Soon, I felt myself getting more and more tired and I finally went to sleep.
