Chapter 14: Point of No Return
Rachel's POV
"How do you get here?" I asked Adam, "You surly didn't get hit in the head with a mirror frame."
"I have no idea," Adam shrugged, "All I did was close my eyes and I was here. I heard you sing and needed to see and talk to you."
"Um," How was I going to explain this, "I changed the musical a bit, but we need to get out of here. Who knows who's listening."
Adam nodded, understanding right away, we headed to the front steps of the Opera Populaire and sat down.
"How much did you change?" Adam asked me, "We can then make a plan to get you home."
I nodded and explained all that's happened so far. Once I finished he nodded.
"So what we can do is, you don't rip off the mask in Point of No Return and run off the stage. I can get us a coach and we can get the heck out of here. I don't know how we'll be able to get back to the real world, but we'll figure it out."
"Okay," I nodded, "Sounds like a plan."
"Hey, do you remember the dance for Footloose still?" Adam asked, "I don't even know what it is anymore because Sophie is my new partner and she's screwing everyone up."
"Of course I still remember," I laugh.
We start dancing at our upbeat tempo. He took me into a spin and dip and lifted me onto his shoulders so I was laying flat. We spun and I flipped down and we continued to dance. People passing by were staring at us weird, but we didn't care. No one knew what we were doing but us.
At this moment Christine walked out and saw the two of us, "Who's this?" she asked me.
"Christine, meet Adam," I introduced the two of them, "he's the one who I danced with at the Masquerade Ball."
"Of course," Christine shook his hand, "I'm Rachel's sister. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"Pleasure's all mine," Adam said with a smile.
"Just wanted to let you know that curtain is in two hours," Christine told me, "so you should get ready soon."
"Right," I said with a smile, "See you then," Christine walked back in and I turned to Adam, hugging my friend, "I'm so glad I don't have to do this alone."
"I'll wait in the wings for you," Adam said and ushered me to go. I nod and go back inside.
Erik's POV
I saw my Angel sing. I see how much I've hurt her. I can't forgive myself, unless I can talk to her. This is why tonight is so important.
I watch her walk off of the stage and a young man grabs her from behind. I nearly go out to let my Punjab lasso do it's work, but Rachel turned to him and started talking with him. They seemed to be close, though I've never seen him before.
Suddenly Rachel leads him out of the opera house and I can only watch them talk outside. I see them dance, and I feel a spark of jealousy spark in my chest. Christine comes at one point, then leaves. When the two stood to leave, they did something that made my blood boil. They embraced and smiled at each other. We can't have that.
Rachel's POV
"I'm ready for this," I look into the dressing room mirror and adjust the costume so, it's ready to go. I pinned my hair in a half up half down look and there was a knock at my door. I opened it and there Adam was.
"You ready?" he asked me.
"As ready as I'll ever be," I answered. He took my hand and escorted me to the wings of the stage. I watched the performance from the wings.
"Here the sire may serve the dam," the chorus begins to sing in one clump, "Here the master takes his meat!
Here the sacrificial lamb
Utters one despairing bleat!"
Then Carlotta joined the chorus members. Desperate to be heard, she sings many octaves higher than written, as well as more exaggerated. Well some things just will never change.
"Poor young maiden! For the thrill
On your tongue of stolen sweets
You will have to pay the bill
Tangled in the winding sheets!"
They crossed across the stage and continued to sing.
"Serve the meal and serve the maid!
Serve the master so that, when
Tables, plans and maids are laid
Don Juan triumphs once again!"
Piangi enters as Don Juan from behind the arch. Meg, who's portraying a gypsy dancer, pirouettes coquettishly for him. He throws her a purse. She catches it and dances with two other girls before exiting off stage.
"Passarino, faithful friend
Once again, recite the plan," Piangi sang to the actor that plays Passarino.
"Your young guest believes I'm you
I, the master; you, the man," Passarino sang the monologue.
"When you met, you wore my cloak
With my scarf, you hid your face
She believes she dines with me
In her master's borrowed place!
Furtively, we'll scoff and quaff
Stealing what, in truth, is mine
When it's late and modesty
Starts to mellow, with the wine," Piangi sings.
"You come home! I use your voice
Slam the door like crack of doom!" Passarino nods as he sings.
"I shall say, "Come, hide with me! Where, oh, where? Of course—my room!"" Piangi sings.
"Poor thing hasn't got a chance!" Passarino scoffs.
"Here's my hat, my cloak and sword
Conquest is assured
If I do not forget myself and laugh," Piangi sings and laughs as he goes behind the curtain.
Although no one but me knows, Erik used a punjab lasso and Signor Piangi is no more.
I follow my cue to go on stage and begin to sing cheerfully as Aminta.
"No thoughts within her head but thoughts of joy!" I sing flouncing on the stage, I take off the shawl and place it on the bench behind me as I continue to sing, "No dreams within her heart but dreams of love!"
"Master?" Passarino asks.
"Passarino—" Erik sings from behind the curtain, "go away! For the trap is set and waits for its prey."
I grab a prop apple and sit down with a flourish. I then polish it on the skirt of my dress.
Erik enters as he appears in the 2004 movie and a chill goes down my spine. There's no going back now. I hope our plan is into place.
"You have come here in pursuit of your deepest urge," he sings as I turn to him, "In pursuit of that wish which till now has been silent
Silent," he brings a finger to his lips.
"I have brought you
That our passions may fuse and merge," I turn from him and fix my eyes on the apple, "In your mind, you've already succumbed to me
Dropped all defenses, completely succumbed to me."
I turn back to him as he is closer to me now.
"Now you are here with me
No second thoughts, you've decided," he sang before doing a cape flip that is so freaking sexy, "Decided"
I stand up from the bench, as if I were pulled to him.
"Past the point
Of no return -
No backward glances:
The games we've played
Till now are at
An end..." he takes the apple from my hand.
"Past all thought
Of "if" or "when" -
No use resisting:
Abandon thought
And let the dream
Descend..." he reaches me fast and embraces me.
"What raging fire
Shall flood the soul?
Which rich desire
Unlocks its door?" He brushes my shoulder with his hand and trails his fingers down my arm, "What sweet seduction
Lies before
Us...?" he kisses my hand.
"Past the point
Of no return,
The final threshold -
What warm,
Unspoken secrets
Will we learn?" he sings.
"Beyond the point
Of no return..." he trails off. I hesitate for a moment. I can see the guardsmen everywhere, but I take a deep breath and start to sing.
"You have brought me
To that moment when words run dry
To that moment when speech dispears
Into silence, silence.
I have come here hardly knowing the reason why
In my mind I've already imagined
Our bodies entwining defenseless and silent
Now I am here with you
No second thoughts
I've decided, decided..." I trailed off before walking over to Erik slyly.
"Past the point of no return," I sang as I went to a staircase that lead to the catwalk, "No going back now
Our passion play has now at last begun."
"Past all thought of right or wrong," I sang as we both climbed up the stairs, "One final question
How long should we to wait before we're one?
When will the blood begin to race?
The sleeping bud burst into bloom?
When will the flames at last consume us?" I finish singing as we both reached the catwalk on the opposite sides.
"Past the point of no return," I both sing as Erik flips his cape off and draps it over the side of the railing, "The final threshold."
"The bridge is crossed," he pulls me close and turns me so my back is facing to him, "so stand and watch it burn
We've passed the point of no return."
The music died and then shouting of guardsmen to shoot and Raoul telling them not to, in fear of them hitting me instead. Erik and I turn to each other, and I know what's going to happen next.
"Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime," Erik sings softly to me, "Lead me, save me from my solitude
Say you want me here with you, beside you," he takes off his ring and puts it on my finger, "Anywhere you go let me go too
Rachel, that's all I ask of-"
But before he could finish, a guardsmen pointing the barrel of his gun towards Erik's chest. I saw it and I screamed before pushing him out of the way. We both collapsed to the ground and Erik's mask got knocked off in the process. So much for making it a swift ending. Erik looked at me with conflicted emotions, one of anger and one of thanks. Before I knew what he was doing he pulled me to him, pulled a rope and we fell through two sets of trap doors under the stage. People were screaming and I heard the new chandelier fall. It wasn't until long when we reached the passage towards the layer. I was apologizing all the way, not wanting this to become what it would be destined to be.
Third Person POV
She was right. The grand, new chandelier fell on the stage and fire caught to the curtains quickly. The whole opera house was in chaos, from patrons running, to the managers surveying the damages.
"Come Madame!" Carlotta screamed after finding the body of Piangi, "Piangi my love, oh mi amore!" she cried.
"Oh my God!" Andre said, face white as a ghost.
"We're ruined Andre!" Firmin shouted, "Ruined!"
Meanwhile Raoul ran to Madame Giry and asked desperately, "Where did he take her?"
"Come Monsieur," Madame Giry said quickly, "I will take you to him, but remember, keep your hand at the level of your eyes!"
"I'm coming with you!" Adam, Christine, and Meg said at the same time.
"No Meg, Christine, you must stay here," the ballet mistress warned, then turned to Adam, "and who are you?"
"A friend of Rachel Daae's," Adam answered.
Madame Giry nodded, "Come with me both of you," she said. The three of them rushed off as a mob started to form, ready to find the opera ghost and take him down once and for all.
