Chapter 14 [Gwen]

I shivered for a moment, trying to focus.  I finally relaxed, looking up and ahead of me.

There he was.

He was strapped to a chair, his face pale and blue.  His eyes were bloodshot, and his teeth chattered.

At first I was scared, but my emotions quickly turned to rage.  It took all I had in me to keep from strangling him then and there.

I calmed down, breathing in and out, in and out.  I had to talk to him.  He was just staring at me, but I was going to get answers.

"Why?" I croaked.  That was all I managed to say, although I had entire sentences planned out in my head.

Bunlei said nothing.

I walked up to him and bent over so our faces were inches apart.  "Why?"  My voice was deeper and rougher.

"Why what?"  He gave a strained smirk, the pain showing in his eyes.

"Why did you take Peter?"

"To stir up trouble, obviously," he said.

"But why him?

"He was the closest.  He was the one out of the three that would be the easiest to control."

"What do you mean?"

"Green Rage could come out at any time.  After all, he did when I took your precious boyfriend, I mean, husband."  I glared at him.

"And Tony?"

"His smart mouth is bad enough.  Peter's is tolerable."

"What did you do to him?"

"Nothing, really.  He just stayed with me until I had use of him, but I guess I didn't get the chance."

"Use of him?"

"To put the Avengers in a helpless state before I attacked."

I shook my head.

"You almost killed him."

"I did?  That's fabulous."

"Listen here," I barked in his face.  I grabbed his shoulder.  He didn't flinch.  "You do not talk about Peter that way."

He smiled.  "And why not?"  He leaned forward, causing me to back up.  "You sure are helping him out, just crying in the corners."

I shot a web across his neck, binding it to his seat.  His eyes widened.

"You have no idea," I growled through clenched teeth.

"Oh, that's right," he said.  "Because I can't use my powers because it's freaking cold in here.  Still, though, I can do a little, like knowing what you're thinking.  Put me in a cell with a Frost Giant and I'm useless, like Loki..."

"Loki is dead."

"...but they, the Frost Giants, are all extinct, so you're out of luck.  Shame.  I guess I'll know your secrets forever."

"I can tighten that webbing on your neck."

"I suppose you could, but S.H.I.E.L.D. would never forgive you."

"Maybe, but threatening makes me feel better."

"Do you even know what S.H.I.E.L.D. is?"

"The Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division.  They help--"

"And who is your Director?"

"Nick Fury."

Bunlei laughed.  I stood up straight, placing my hands on my hips.

"I don't find that funny."

"Oh, I do.  I guess I know more since I hacked into Nick's computers."

"Why did you do that?"  I cocked my head.  "Couldn't you just do your so-called 'mind reading' to find out what you need?"

"I've gotta have a little fun, jeez.  And Nick is paranoid about his security, so I weakened him enough to get your Science Buddies to work together.  Everyone was paranoid, so I could snatch one up and ruin them even more."

"But you failed," I said.  "How terrible."  My sarcasm was harsh and hateful.  My fingers tingled to use them again to hurt this devil.  But I couldn't.

I wished I could.

"Maybe.  Good luck locking me up.  They didn't freeze me enough in Asgard, and there were no Frost Giants with me, so I could find out what my guard was thinking.  He always drank a lot before midnight, enough to get drunk.  So he was easy to avoid once I made it out of my cell..."  He looked at me with a sneer.  "I'll get out of here eventually.  I always do.  You can count on it."

"Your pride has given me a lot of answers I need, Bunlei.  I'm not sure I would."  With that, I turned and walked out, the door slamming behind me.

As soon as the door closed, I burst into tears.
