Chapter 12 [Peter]

My eyes fluttered open, and I instantly felt a soft cushion under my body. I was lying on a hospital-like bed.

I shifted to get into a sitting position, instantly regretting it. Agonizing pain shot through my head, causing me to crumple back onto the mattress. My vision blackened for a moment, then returned.

My head had hit the pavement. A wave of energy from Bunlei had knocked me down.

I closed my eyes back, regulating my breathing. That's when I heard the voices.

"Is he in there?" It was Gwen. My heart rate quickened; the memory of our kiss fresh on my mind, followed by my half-conscious self being carried into a helicopter before I blacked out again.

"Yes. We just set him up a few minutes ago." I didn't recognize the voice, although it was female. Maybe a nurse.

"I have to see him."

"Gwen, he's unconscious, and it's only been fifteen minutes since you found him."

"I don't care. I have to see him!"

"Nick wants to see you in the conference room..."

"Well screw Nick! I am going to see my husband!" Gwen's voice cracked. I clenched the sheets in between my fists, anger boiling inside me. No one should stand in Gwen's way. I wanted to see her, too.

I heard fast footsteps: someone running. There was a click, and the door to my room swung open. I turned my head, wincing, seeing Gwen walk in, her face wet from recent tears. My heart ached, but I was happy to see her.

"Peter," she croaked. Her lip quivered. She hurried to my bed, throwing her arms around me. "They said you were unconscious."

"Just woke up," I said. I dragged my arm out from under the sheets to wrap it around her.

"I love you," she said.

"I love you too," I replied.

"How are you?"

"All right, but my head feels terrible. I would have survived the impact if my head hadn't smashed into the pavement."

"You may have a concussion."

I smirked, understanding her reference.

"Well, the nurse already found me, so..." My voice trailed off.

"There's so much I need to tell you..."

Gwen kissed me. I smiled against her lips, pulling myself closer to her, ignoring the pain in my head. It was fading, anyway. Very fast. Was it my self-healing abilities or Gwen?

I kissed Gwen harder, and soon I was sitting up. Somehow Gwen ended up in my lap. I wrapped my arms around her waist, my chin on her shoulder.

"So what is it that you want to tell me?" I whispered into her ear.

She turned around to look me in the eyes, a smile rising on her face. "I'm pregnant."
