Chapter 41
After Harry was taken into Ravencroft custody, his home was put up for sale. He was distressed at the loss of his place, but quickly got over it and tried to stay optimistic, like I had suggested. He was doing very well.
I readied the guest room for him, amused at how it hadn't been used in over ten years, then two different people suddenly stayed there in the past few weeks. Harry had no other clothes, so I lent him some of mine, which almost fit him perfectly. I could tell that he was relieved to shimmy out of his neon orange jumpsuit.
Aunt May's shift extended late, and Harry and I were both exhausted, so we went to bed pretty early. I left him alone in the guest room, returning to my own room. I closed my door and turned around, gasping.
Captain Stacy stood two feet in front of me, staring at me with his unforgiving eyes. I hadn't seen him in a very long time; I had hoped my visions of him had finally ended.
I swallowed hard, walking slowly to my bed. I knew he would disappear soon, so I tried to ignore him. I checked my cell phone for any texts, then slumped onto my sheets.
Captain Stacy was still there.
I sat up, staring back at him. A shiver ran down my spine. I stood back up, then shuffled over to him. I had never touched him in my visions before. Would he disappear? Would he be solid, or would my hand go straight through him like mist?
I reached out to him, shaking. It's not real. I told myself. My fingers brushed his half-solid shoulder, and he blinked.
I flinched, falling backward. My heart pumped fast; I could feel it in my head. Then his lips moved. It took me several seconds to realize that he had spoken.
"Sir?" I asked, my voice trembling. I acted formal as I spoke.
"Peter," he replied.
"Yes?" I shuddered.
"I was wrong about you, Peter." Memories flooded my brain. That was the exact same thing he'd said before he died that night. Was this just an extremely powerful memory? But then he said something I hadn't heard before.
"Again. You have a knack for surprising me."
"I-I do?" My teeth chattered.
"You and Gwen." Fear prickled my veins.
"I'm sorry! I haven't forgotten our promise! I just...I can't live without her. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am so sorry..." I covered my face with my hands, feeling them grow wet. This was the second time I'd cried today.
"You're sorry? I should be sorry, Peter." I looked up at him, shocked.
"Huh?"
"There's nothing that can please her, other than you. You are the only person that can truly make her happy. Haven't you noticed that? The way she looks at you when she sees you? You tried to stay away, but she just ran back to you. There's no way that you can possibly hold her back. Love is crazy. She loves you."
I couldn't hold back a smile. "I know."
"You can protect her. I trust you," he said, returning my smile. "I want you to promise me something, okay?" Memories of that night grew stronger as he quoted himself more and more. I nodded. "Take care of Gwen. Protect her. Love her. Promise me that, okay?"
"I promise."
"I knew you would." His voice was fading, and his body was growing translucent. Then he was gone.
I sucked in a breath, my heart still beating quickly. I was overcome with excitement, no, pure joy. Captain Stacy approved. I cocked my head, confused. So, was that really him, or my imagination? I bit my lip. No, that had to be him. This was the first time in ages that I felt truly satisfied.
Was he a ghost? Was that possible? I shook my head, a headache panging my skull. It was something I couldn't comprehend. Maybe I wasn't supposed to.
