Chapter 39

I spun around, facing Harry, who had spoken.  He sat in a wooden chair in the corner of the room, looking happy and healthy.

He didn't look like the I'm-gonna-kill-you-and-it's-going-to-be-fun kind of happy.  He looked happy.

He didn't look like I'm-temporarily-healed-in-a-suit-but-I'll-die-without-it kind of healthy, either.  He was healed.  I could see it in his eyes.  This was the real Harry, and he was alright.  He wasn't going to die.

"Harry," I spoke his name, flabbergasted.  "It's you."  He smiled.  Not an evil smile, but a cheerful, friendly smile.

"Yes.  It is.  You were right."  He rose to his feet.  We just stared at each other for a moment, until we both collided into an embrace.  I buried my face into his shoulder, feeling his orange clothing getting wet.  I was crying, but I didn't care.  I had lost my friend.  He was back now.  "I finally understand."

"I never thought I'd see you again," I mumbled.  "The real you."  We parted, and I stared into his deep, bright blue eyes.

"I'm here, now.  They saved me."

"'They?'  You mean the people at Ravencroft?  The same people who tortured Electro saved you?"

"Hard to believe, yes, I know," Harry said.  "But...they did.  They found a way to reverse the effects of the spider venom, or maybe they only extracted it, but they managed to take my disease with it."

"I'm so glad you're back, man!"  I patted his back, causing him to stumble forward with a chuckle.

"I just...I didn't mean to cause so much damage."  Our tone quickly returned to serious, and the room seemed to turn several degrees colder.

"I know.  It's okay, now."

"No, it's not.  Some people are hurt.  A couple died.  I know they were bad and all, but they still died, because of me.  Now, how can I live with that?"

I looked down at my feet with a sigh.

"Electro, Dr. Octopus, and Mysterio are all gone because of me.  Maybe you sent them after me, but I killed them."  He looked up at me with sad eyes.  "Uncle Ben's killer is gone because of me.  Captain Stacy died because of me.  Dr. Connors became the Lizard because of me.  My Uncle Ben died because I didn't save him.  It's a lot to bear.  We all make mistakes.  We all do things.  Sometimes they are neccessary."

My short speech seemed to brighten up Harry a bit.  He nodded, but there was still tension between us.

"It's still not over," he muttered.

"Is it ever over?"  I scratched my forehead.

"No, but, Fiers..."

"Fiers?"

"Gustav Fiers.  He has some ties with Oscorp, but I'm not sure what exactly they are, yet.  He was on the Green Goblin's side.  He is evil.  I'm afraid...I'm afraid he's going to cause even more trouble than he already has.  Maybe he has my disease to spread.  Maybe he has the spider venom to use on others.  I don't know."

"What does he look like?"

"Brown hair, blue eyes, always wears black when I see him, he likes hats...I don't know.  He's really creepy.  I don't want to mess with him, but we have to stop him."

I thought for a minute.  "So are you an experiment now?"

"I guess."

"Were they planning on letting me out?  I mean, I guess we're stuck here, then."

"Not that I know of.  They're mean like that."  I smiled at his comment.

"Then we break out."

"What?"

"You heard me.  Have you forgotten who I am?"

Harry laughed.  "Oh, yeah.  You're that spider guy, right?"  I enjoyed hearing him speak of my alter ego in a positive way.

"Yep, that's me.  Hey, do you have any of your abilities left, or are you normal again?"

"Um, I'm a little stronger and faster, but not as much as I was when I was the Green Goblin."

"It should be enough.  Just follow my lead."

"You can count on me."

I stood in front of the jail bars, gripping them tightly.  I took a deep breath, then pulled.  They bent with a low creak, until I was satisfied, dropping my hands.  My knuckles were white, but their color was quickly restored shortly after I loosened my grip.

"I wish I could still do that, Pete."  Harry chuckled again, pushing his hair out of his face.  I returned his smile, but it quickly went away.  I unzipped my jacket, then froze, staring at the spider on my chest.  "What is it?"

"I'm not sure how we can get out of here without them knowing," I said, motioning to my suit.  "They know that I'm the only other person here with you, so if I was in my suit, they'd figure it out.  If I didn't wear my suit, but I fought like Spider-Man, they'd find out from that, too."

Harry frowned.  "Why do you need to fight them?"

"What, do you think they'll just escort us out?  No, they'll try to keep us locked in.  I don't think it's possible to sneak out, with all of this security."

"Then don't fight like Spider-Man.  Just knock them out with your bare hands."  I cocked my head, considering his suggestion.

"Okay.  That will work, I guess."  I zipped my jacket back up, then climbed out of the cell through the bars.  Harry followed me.

To prevent them from discovering how we escaped, I pushed the bars back together, making them look as if they'd never moved in the first place.  Harry and I sprinted down the hallway.

We spotted our first guard, he pointed his gun at us, and I dodged the shots that he fired, turning into a flip, slamming my feet into his face.  He slammed to the ground, dropping his gun.  It slid a few feet away, and Harry picked it up, pointing it at him.  I punched the guard, knocking him out cold, despite his struggles.  Then, we searched his pockets, finding a keycard to unlock all of the doors.

"Can you tell?"  I asked, standing back up and brushing off my clothes.  "By the way I'm fighting?  I'm not using webs this time."

"Nope.  You just look like you're highly trained."  I grunted.  I was only a nerdy kid that was friends with Harry, to the people at Ravencroft.  This would be a surprise to them.  Hopefully it wouldn't raise too many suspicions.

"It'll have to do."  We carried on, turning corners and dashing through more hallways.  I began to think we had gotten lost, until we reached another barred door.  I rubbed my hands together, checking for security cameras.  There was one hanging from a wall on our right; I disabled it before prying through the bars.

If there were security cameras, then they knew we were escaping.  Backup would be onto us soon.  We had to hurry.

Harry and I climbed through the bars, and then I bent them back inward, and we were running once again, to be attacked by a mob of guards.

We were engaged into a fistfight.  I prayed silently that Harry wouldn't get shot as I dodged bullets.  The guards shouted, and I kicked one in the legs.  He fell to the ground.  Another guard came at me from behind, and my spider senses caused me to slide to the left, and he crashed to the floor.

Harry and I fought for a couple of minutes, only receiving a layer of sweat, a bloody nose, and a few scratches.  I had plenty of energy left, though, with my enhanced spider agility, giving me impressive stamina.  Harry, on the other hand, was ready to collapse onto the floor beside the guards.

Letting out a sigh, I lifted Harry up onto my back.  He nodded gratefully, but I could tell he was embarrassed.  I jogged down the rest of the hallways with Harry on my back, finally reaching the exit.  I swiped the keycard.

Access Granted.

The door slid open, and I arrived next to Aunt May's car.  I assisted Harry with climbing into the passenger seat, and then I plopped beside him behind the wheel.  I drove up to the gate, swiping the card once more as I reached out the window, and the gate swung open.  Then our car sped away as the gate shut.  I dropped the card onto the ground as we departed.
