Chapter 15
Rhino was my first opponent, later that day. He chose to attack the city like before, shooting and destroying things. Really, though, he was luring me in to the fight.
He was an easy opponent. Aleksei always focused more on offense; he never tried to defend himself. I easily climbed onto his back where he couldn't shoot me. He did slam his back into a building though.
Ouch.
I managed to hold on, inspecting how I could get inside the machine. I found a handhold, then began ripping it apart.
Aleksei roared, firing explosives in the air. Then, I found my first wire. I yanked it free. Sparks flew, and Rhino stumbled. He slammed me into the building again.
Ouch.
I shook my head, trying to prevent it from spinning. Then I yanked another wire. Rhino staggered forward.
I yanked out more wires, one after another. Finally, Aleksei fell out of the machine, and the armor crumpled to the ground. Several police officers ran up to Aleksei, handcuffing him and dragging him into a police car. Then I turned back to the Rhino suit.
I had to destroy it. Really destroy it. I had to destroy it way beyond repair.
I ripped a flamethrower off of the machine's right arm. I turned it on, melting the metal with the weapon's extreme temperatures. Wow, this was one advanced flamethrower.
Then, the Rhino suit was a pile of junk. The metal cooled, forming a different shape.
One down, five to go.
A movement caught my eye. I looked up, seeing the same mysterious figure standing at the top of another building. Who was it? Why were they always watching?
---
The next attack occurred Sunday. Doctor Octopus decided to strike next. He gave a fight much more difficult than Rhino.
His metal limbs were all coming at me from different directions. I would try to hold back one, and then another would grab me, then toss me in the air. My spider senses were warning me, but I was running out of the energy to dodge the arms. When I was thrown in the air for the fifth time, I saw the figure once again.
I slammed onto the ground. Pain shot through my body. I hurt everywhere, and I still had no idea how to beat this guy. I looked back up to where the figure had been standing, only to discover that it'd disappeared.
My spider senses told me to roll to the side. I did, but barely in time. One of his arms smashed into the ground where I had been seconds ago. My head throbbed.
I had to find this guy's weakness.
We were in an abandoned area of the city. There was hardly anything around except old buildings and piles of trash.
Another mechanical arm was coming my direction, I dodged it, only to be snatched up by another.
Instead of throwing me up in the air, Doctor Octopus held me, dangling in front of him.
"It's a shame, Harry never told me who you really are," he said. "He never told me who's under that mask." I suddenly realized why. Harry Osborn was still in there somewhere. Although he turned five other supervillains against me, he still had the heart to keep my real identity a secret.
How thoughtful.
Another mechanical arm was outstretched, reaching for my face. He was going to unmask me. I struggled to break free of his grasp, but he only gripped tighter.
I am Peter Parker, and he's about to figure that out.
I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting. Waiting for the scrape of metal against my head as he removed the mask. Waiting for the sudden cool breeze on my bare face.
It never came.
I opened my eyes to see him stumble. Although he had four extra arms, his body was still exposed. Now it was covered with spiderwebs.
Did I do that?
I had to have done it. I was the only one who could.
Doctor Octopus started shouting, but it was muffled by the webs covering his face. He could still move his arms, but he couldn't see where he was moving them.
His confusion was all I needed to finally break free. The grip he had on me had loosened slightly, so I wiggled out of his mechanical hand and fell to the ground, only to land in front of someone.
They were dressed almost exactly like me. Their suit was almost identical to mine, except for a few differences. But, the biggest difference between us two was...that person was a woman.
"What in the name of..." I began, only to be silenced by her finger, which was pointing back in the direction of Doctor Octopus. He was attempting to use his extra arms to remove the spider webbing from himself.
So she did that...not me.
But how?
I didn't have the chance to figure that out. Doctor Octopus was free. The spider woman was already running to him.
"Well, I guess she's my ally then," I mumbled to myself, running after her.
We both began shooting webs, tying him up. His arms ripped through the webs, but they were enough to stall him for several seconds at a time. He was too angry and confused to realize that there were two of us.
"You distract him, I'll go for the other arms!" I shouted to her. She nodded, continuing to shoot webs. Was she able to redesign my web shooters? I shook my head, confused. I ran up to an unoccupied arm, which was swinging around smashing stuff. I leaped onto it, latching on. It was difficult, but I managed to crawl down it until I reached Dr. Octopus's backside without his knowledge of my presence.
The spider woman shot another web at his face. Dr. Octopus moaned, and I made my move.
I leaped onto his back. I grabbed one of his metal arms and pulled as hard as I could. He screamed, and I heard his flesh rip. And then, the arms were no longer connected. All that remained was a long gash down his back. He cried out in pain, then fell to the ground.
I dropped the arms, watching them malfunction with no power source. Then, they stopped moving. The spider woman and I hurried over to the bleeding Doctor Octopus.
He was dying. The life was slowly fading out of his eyes. A pool of blood was appearing under his limp body. A weak jolt of surprise went through him when he realized that there were two of us, but he was too weak to care.
"I didn't want to be evil," he mumbled hoarsely. "The arms overpowered me. They turned me that way. I never meant to do this. I'm sorry." He closed his eyes.
"Hey! Come on, don't go! We can help you!" I pleaded for the man to stay alive, to fight long enough for us to get medical attention, but he was already gone. I looked up, seeing the spider woman kneeling beside him.
"Who are you?" I asked her. "How are you like this?"
"Peter..." She spoke for the first time. Her voice sounded familiar.
Then she removed her mask. I watched her blonde hair fall into her face, and she looked at me with those beautiful green eyes.
Gwen.
