Issue 34: Magically Magical Magic

"Soooo...let me get this straight!" Spider-Witch exclaimed as she swung with Eda flying beside her. "You were one of the strongest witches in 'The Boiling Isles', until you got cursed by your jealous sister and now you have a metal thing in your chest that's basically a new heart that stops you from using magic, but keeps the curse at bay?"

Eda nodded. "That's basically the gist."

"What does the curse do?" Spider-Witch asked curiously.

Eda shrugged. "Turns me into a gigantic owl monster where I have next to no control of my body whatsoever and am usually acting on the primal instinct to kill."

Spider-Witch felt the color drain from her face and she shivered. "Remind me not to ask again..."

Eda nodded. "My sister, Lilith, thought the curse was temporary...she felt real bad when she learned it became permanent. So, I used a portal from my other sister to hopefully find a cure here...and sure enough, I absolutely failed."

Spider-Witch chuckled sheepishly. "Yeah, uh, we have a lot of great things, but no cures for magical curses."

"So, I made one. I got real good with technology and made myself an arc reactor and this nifty suit." Eda said. "And apparently this Golden Goblin creep used my family symbol as headgear."

"Don't call him a creep!" Spider-Witch exclaimed before her eyes widened. "S-sorry, that...that was really mean. Look, Golden Goblin isn't evil, just brainwashed in a sense. I know him and he's like a brother to me! His eyes were glowing gold like he was possessed!"

Eda's eyes widened under her helmet and she hummed. "Good to know..."

"...wait, family symbol?" Spider-Witch asked.

Eda chuckled. "Yup. My family's got a thing for birds. I'm all about the owls because of my wisdom...that and the whole owl beast thing. Figured as a kid that 'Hey! If I'm gonna be cursed to turn into a giant owl, why not make it my theme?'"

"Definitely a way to cope!" Spider-Witch cried. "OOH! Maybe you could call yourself...Iron Owl!"

Eda blinked before she hummed. "That's...not bad. Iron Owl." She repeated. "Although, this thing ain't made of iron. It's a mystically infused titanium alloy."

"Well, yeah, but Mystically Infused Titanium Alloy Owl isn't as catchy." Spider-Witch said before seeing a penthouse of some kind. "Whoa. You live there?!"

Eda smirked before she stopped flying and landed right at the front door, her suit suddenly retracting into...a briefcase. "Correctamundo, kid."

Spider-Witch landed and de-transformed. "Consider me jealous. How the heck did you even afford a penthouse if you don't live here?!"

"Oh, this thing ain't mine." Eda said as she walked in.

Luz's eyes widened. "Did you steal this!?!"

"No! Sheesh!" Eda cried as Luz followed her inside. "My other sister, Evelyn, lent it to me. She used to live in the human world for a bit, but that's a story for another time. Her ex-husband lent this place to her along with some human currency and she just...never gave it back."

Luz looked around, clearly in awe by how cool everything looked. She even started wondering if it was possible that she could get a superhero lair for herself. A lot of superheroes had their own bases after all. "So, you live here alone...?"

"Nah, my sister visits sometimes from home...oh, and my kids live here with me." Eda said as she took a seat.

Luz looked right at her. "You have witch kids?!"

"...ehhhh, not exactly." Eda said before hearing a bunch of rapid footsteps from upstairs. "Ah, right on cue!"

Then, in mere moments, two children ran downstairs...but they didn't at all look like Eda and looked to be no older than 8 or 10.

One wasn't even humanoid and looked like a puppy with fluffy gray fur and a collar wrapped around his neck, yet he was standing on two legs and had a skull on his head with large horns, with one of them being broken.

The other looked human, but his skin was a light yellow and blue, styled like a half moon. His hair was a powdery white, and he seemed to be wearing strange space-themed PJ's.

"Mama Eda!!! You're back!!!" The space kid exclaimed as he rushed over and practically crawled onto Eda's lap to hug her.

The skull kid ran over and hugged Eda as well. "King demands huggies too!!!"

Eda snorted and hugged them back. "Hey, I told you I wouldn't be long, you two...you didn't wreck anything while I was gone?"

"Nope!" The space kid smiled. "Would we really break something while you were-"

"Orion, I adopted you and I've rubbed off on you two." Eda said, her eyes narrowed. "Heck, I would break something while I was gone."

"But we didn't this time! Pinky swear!" Orion exclaimed, holding up his pinky, only for King to shake it with his own.

Eda sighed. "Alright, I believe you...for now."

King smiled before finally noticing Luz. "...Mom, did you kidnap somebody?"

Luz's eyes were starry at the overall adorable appearance of King and Orion, and she looked like she was holding in a squeal.

Orion tilted his head, scratching it as well. "Is she gonna explode?"

"No, not yet." Eda said. "Orion, King, this is Luz Noceda AKA Spider-Witch."

King and Orion's eyes widened immediately and their eyes quickly turned sparkly as they rushed over. "You're Spider-Witch!?!"

Orion quickly sat next to Luz. "You're the superhero that beats up all those bad guys!?"

"And with the gylphs!?!" King exclaimed, smiling wide.

Luz finally couldn't take it anymore and she hugged the two of them. "Yes, I am!!! And you two are the cutest things I've ever seen!!!!"

"So many hugs today." Eda chuckled as she walked over. "They saw you on TV and became instant fans."

Luz then let them go. "Heh! Sorry, sorry! I'm normally not super personal so soon!!!"

"But you're awesome!!!" King cried, his tail wagging rapidly. "And Mom says you have my dad's gylphs!!!"

Luz's eyes widened. "Your dad's...what? Wait, wait, you also know where my powers come from?"

"You don't?" Orion asked, tilting his head. "But your name is Spider-Witch."

Luz chuckled sheepishly. "Well, yeah, but I'm actually still learning a lot of my powers. I've only just recently learned I can do this." She said as her hand lit ablaze.

"Yeah! Fire glyph!" King said with a nod.

Luz blinked before looking at the two. "Is your dad around so I can ask him more about them...?"

"Unfortunately, no." Eda said. "It's a long story and you deserve to know. It's why I brought ya here in the first place...as a matter of fact, it's best I show ya."

King gasped. "Portal time!!!"

Orion squealed and suddenly summoned a gigantic star and sat on it, which then floated him downstairs, with King running after him.

"So...you adopted them?" Luz asked as she stood up and began walking with Eda. "And by the way, I can totally babysit!"

"I'll hold ya up on that offer." Eda said. "And yeah. While I was still learning all this fancy technological knowhow, I discovered them in a temple that was completely isolated from everything else. King's what we call a Titan and Orion's a Collector."

"Oh, I'm a collector too!" Luz smiled. "But what the heck's a Titan?"

Eda snorted. "Yeahhhh, no. A Titan and a Collector are basically Gods."

Luz's jaw dropped. "OH...SO, THEY'RE-?"

"Not yet." Eda said. "Their powers are significantly weaker, but given their species, they'll likely grow stronger. The Titans and Collectors have a long history, but then we'd be here all day!"

"B-BUT! BUT! YOU CAN'T JUST SAY THAT AND LEAVE IT THERE!" Luz cried. "My theorist brain needs answers!!!"

"And you'll get them, just not all of them today." Eda said. "But The Titans are where your powers came from...sadly, King's the only one left."

"What about his dad...?" Luz asked, tilting her head.

Then, the two arrived in a room, where Orion and King were patiently waiting by a door...with an entirely new realm inside. King and Orion giggled before they rushed inside, with Eda and Luz following.

And through the portal door was a realm beyond Luz's wildest dreams. The grass and trees were a dusty red instead of green, the sky was almost purple in color, and she was looking at a gigantic colossal skeleton that she couldn't even see completely since she could only see the head, yet, in the distance, were its ribs.

And much closer was a town. Each building had a modernized yet almost medieval and demonic feel to it. And the people were no different.

Humanoid or completely beast like or all of the above were walking through the town like normal.

It was almost too much for Luz to handle, and it rendered her as still as a statue.

King poked her. "Mom, is she okay...?"

"She's fine, sweetie. Just give her a sec."

And after about a minute, Luz was smiling wide. "I NEED TO GO DOWN THERE NOW. THIS IS, LIKE, THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!"

"Hey, now, calm down." Eda said. "Not every witch is as friendly as I am. So, walk with us and I'll explain where your powers come from...jeez, so much explaining to do."

"Explain away, please! Again! My theorist brain needs answers!" Luz cried as they all began walking. "Titans are the source of my powers."

"That's me!" King smiled. "Or, rather, my dad and the rest of my kind!"

"Heh! I was just adopted into the family, but I did get to watch King hatch!" Orion said.

"And we're walking on him. The very carcass that makes The Boiling Isles." Eda said.

Luz's eyes widened in horror and she looked at King and Orion. "...you two are okay, right?"

"Yeah, we...we've gotten used to it." Orion said. "Besides, Dad knew it was gonna happen. And...I dunno, it's like he's still with us or something."

Luz's heart clenched. 'They lost their dad too...'

Eda gently ruffled Orion's hair before continuing. "Your powers consist of the four gylphs that were the language of The Titans, which helped grant them their magic. You've discovered three, one of which has been altered from light to...spider webs, I guess."

"Ohhhhh! Cool!!!" Luz smiled. "So, web, ice, and fire! What's the fourth?"

"That's plant. You'll be able to make cool vines and such." Eda explained. "But somehow, the four main gylphs were transferred into you."

Luz hummed. "Actually, I only got these powers after a spider bit me. So, maybe it was a spider from here?"

Eda scratched her chin. "It's possible, but it's more likely that the gylphs just transferred to the spider and after it bit you, it went into you next...that still brings up how it got into the spider, but I think you get it."

Luz nodded. "So, my powers came from the language of gods! Gotcha! That info's locked in my brain!"

"Lucky. I haven't even got mine yet." King pouted.

Luz just smiled kindly. "I'm sure you will, King!"

"Yeah! You totally will, baby bro!" Orion smiled, giving his brother a hug.

King giggled. "Thanks."

Luz's heart melted before she looked back at Eda. "So, now that we know how I got my powers even with a looming mystery still over it...mind showing me around this awesome place?!"

Eda hummed before she grinned. "Y'know what? Why not? Something tells me you'll fit right in anyway."

Luz smiled wide before hearing a witch suddenly scream the moment her Spider-Sense went off.

"SLITHERBEAST!!!"

Luz whipped her head around and then saw a hulking beast covered head to toe in white fur and with a large mouth with razor sharp teeth. Her eyes narrowed and she transformed, swinging right in.

The Slitherbeast growled and then roared at Spider-Witch, before suddenly shooting out a blast of purple goo right from its mouth.

Spider-Witch yelped and front flipped right onto its back. "Hey! Sticking people to the ground is my schtick! You start making quips and I'll sue!"

The Slitherbeast roared louder and tried to get her off like a bull would its rider, but Spider-Witch jumped off its back and then webbed two of its legs to the ground.

But then, suddenly, two witches ran over and spun strange circles into the air. Suddenly, vines erupted from the ground and tied The Slitherbeast's other legs down.

Then, a third witch stood beside Spider-Witch spun another circle and it went towards the Slitherbeast, and moments later, the growling stopped and it started to calm down.

"Whoa...what'd you do?" Spider-Witch asked.

"Beast-keeping spell." The witch replied. "The poor thing's just upset."

Spider-Witch hummed and then walked over to the Slitherbeast before she found a bunch of thorns in its side, quite literally. Her eyes softened and she started picking them out one by one.

The Slitherbeast was then freed from the vines and webs and it looked at Spider-Witch...before licking her like a dog would their owner.

Spider-Witch blinked, her suit covered in purple slime. She was silent before she laughed and began petting the beast. "Awwww, you're not so scary now, aren't ya?"

Eda, Orion, and King then walked over, with Eda whistling. "What I tell ya, kid? You already fit in."

"Do we have a pet now?" King asked.

"NO."
