Issue 2: Fantasy and Reality
The bus eventually arrived at its stop and all the students inside got a grand look at Wittebane Enterprises. The rather massive building that made everyone feel fancy just by looking at it.
Luz smiled. "Welp! We're here!"
"Man, it's much bigger up close." Vee said before seeing their teacher get up from their seat and beginning to guide students outside.
Willow stood up. "That's our cue!"
"Fancy laboratory, here we come!" Gus said as he followed her alongside Luz and Vee.
When they all got outside, they all gathered up and the teachers gave their usual speech of being respectful and to follow the rules. Whether or not anyone had the intention to break them was unknown, but hopefully low.
But then, Luz felt someone grab her shoulder. She jumped a bit and turned around to see a familiar face with short blonde hair, a gap in his teeth, and chocolate brown eyes.
This was none other than Hunter Wittebane.
"Welcome to my second home." He whispered with a smile. "Did I spook ya?"
"A little, you jerk!" Luz whispered, lightly pushing him playfully.
Hunter just grinned before turning to the others. "Hey, guys. Sorry I didn't show up at the bus. Dad wanted to take me himself."
Vee just shrugged it off while Gus did his signature secret handshake with Hunter, the two softly laughing.
"D-don't worry about it, Hunt." Willow said with a light...blush.
Luz, Vee, and Gus immediately noticed. But with an almost evil grin, they decided not to say anything.
Then, a voice called out once the teacher stopped talking. "Hunter!"
Hunter's eyes widened a bit and he turned. "Oh! Dad! Hey!"
Hunter's father was practically the spitting image of him, just with much longer hair and obviously a lot taller with a dark suit on. He handed Hunter a backpack. "You forgot this."
"Ohhh, right! Sorry." Hunter laughed as he took the bag. "Everyone? This is my father. You've met him before, I'm sure."
Hunter's father, Caleb, laughed a bit. "Luz, Vee, Willow, and Augustus. Good to see you all again."
"It's nice to see you, sir!" Luz smiled. "Thanks for letting us all come here! I mean...this place is basically a mansion of science fiction!"
Vee nodded. "Your research on nanotechnology is astounding!"
Caleb's eyes widened slightly in surprise. He had met up with the Noceda Twins before, he used to know their parents after all, but he hadn't seen them enough to know their interests. "And you...understood it?"
Willow giggled. "Yeah! We did a group project on it! And no, we did not use Hunter as a cheat sheet."
Hunter grinned. "I offered."
Caleb laughed a bit, crossing his arms. "Well, looks like we have some potential scientists in the making! Don't ever be ashamed of being smart, it gets you through school. After all, I'm something of a scientist myself."
Luz giggled. "Didn't you start this company?"
"I may have started it, Luz, but I'm not the sole reason it's still up." Caleb said. "Speaking of which, I better go inside. Enjoy the tour, kids!" He smiled as he walked off.
Willow then looked at Hunter. "Your dad's still super nice...although, I'm still wondering why you two look so much alike."
Hunter shrugged. "Maybe I'm secretly a clone of him created in a gigantic tube."
Vee snorted and laughed. "As awesome as that would be? Things like that can't happen."
"Yet." Luz said with a grin.
Eventually, the group started walking inside and then met with their tour guide.
The tour guide smiled. "Welcome to Wittebane Enterprises, everyone! Please keep questions and hands to yourself until the end of the tour."
The students all nodded and then began following their guide while looking around the building. When they eventually made it to the almost museum-like display of all the inventions and medicine that the company had made, the tour guide began speaking.
"Wittebane Enterprises prides itself in making fiction a reality." The tour guide said. "Anything your mind can think of, someone's had it before and tried to make it possible here. Medicine for the most fatal disease or unbreakable armor for the most heroic soldier."
She then showed her hand to one display of what looked to be the armor that she mentioned. It was a bright gold with hints of a darker shade all across it. One of the gauntlets on the wrist even had some kind of arm blade.
'That is sick!' Luz thought.
"Of course, we're well aware that the weapons we can create could get into the wrong hands. We pride ourselves on our security as well." The tour guide said. "The inventions and technology we create here will not fall into the wrong hands. You can rest easy knowing that."
Vee then looked at her sister, whispering. "Imagine having to go to war against someone in that thing."
"I'd surrender...especially with the really nifty glider over there." Luz whispered back, leaning her head towards another display of a similarly painted glider.
The glider itself was weaponized, but for the sake of display, all the weapons were taken out and what was shown were harmless replicas.
The tour continued with the guide giving some history on more of the inventions inside and how the company started in the first place. The tour itself went in one giant circle before they were back in the display area.
"Alright, that ends the tour. Does anyone have any questions?" The guide asked with a gentle smile.
And sure enough, a lot of hands raised. The guide seemed surprised for a moment before picking one. "Yes, you with the rather stunning purple hair."
Luz's eyes widened a bit and she immediately shifted her focus towards Amity.
"First, thanks! Second, what's coming out next for Wittebane Enterprises?" Amity asked.
The guide hummed. "Well, the best way I can put it is that your guess is as good as mine. We don't often like to announce new things unless we're 100% certain they work. Unfortunately, I don't work in the actual laboratories, so I can't give a sneak peek of what's to come. Not that I would be allowed to anyway."
Gus then looked at Hunter, whispering. "Do you know?"
Hunter shook his head. "Nope."
Eventually, free time began. They could either eat lunch outside or continue to look around in the first display. But, solely for the purpose of not getting lost, they couldn't go beyond that.
Luz decided to go back inside to get a better look, while her friends ate lunch. She was about to look at the golden armor again before seeing someone step up to it before her.
She yelped and hid behind the wall when she saw it was none other than Amity Blight herself.
Amity heard her and looked over, but then shrugged it off and continued looking.
'Gotta hide, gotta hide, gotta hide, gotta hiiiiide!!!' Luz thought, looking around...but then, she remembered the words of her friends.
She had to do something. It was just like in nearly every single TV show or movie with a love story in history. If she wanted the ship to come true, she actually had to do something.
Luz took a deep breath, trying to suppress her panic for once in her life as she walked over to Amity. "U-umm...hey, Amity!"
Amity turned and smiled. "Hi, Luz!"
"H-hey, you remember my name!" Luz said, giggling a little as she rubbed the back of her neck.
Amity grinned. "You've been my classmate since the fifth grade. I remember your name."
"R-right." Luz said. "P-pretty cool suit of armor, huh?"
Amity nodded. "It is pretty cool. A little concerning though."
"Concerning?" Luz asked suddenly, slowly beginning to calm down. "You're worried about someone taking it?"
Amity waved her hand a bit in the 'ehhh, so-so' gesture. "A little. But not much. The security here is pretty good. My dad's an engineer himself and he usually goes to pretty great lengths to keep something safe."
Luz turned. "I didn't know your dad was an engineer."
"Well, we haven't talked a whole lot." Amity giggled. "You, uhh, seem scared by me sometimes."
Luz's cheeks flushed and her mind began screaming at the top of her lungs as it began to replay all the times she hid from Amity throughout the years.
'Think of something to say, you goofball!!! Before it gets awkward!!!' Luz's brain boomed.
"I-it wasn't that I was scared of you, you're not scary at all!"
"I can be." Amity said with a playful grin.
Luz's face turned red and she cleared her throat. "R-right, right! You...y-you can be a lot of things!"
Amity turned, not replying to that since she had a feeling Luz had more to say.
"I-I mean...you're one of the smartest students in class! You're great at math, history, and science! I've seen a few students wrestle to be your partner sometimes!" Luz laughed. "Y-you clearly know what you're doing..."
Amity's eyes softened a bit. "Well...I'm not sure that last part is true. I still have some things I wanna figure out...like my taste in women for one."
Luz turned. "T-the Boscha thing...?"
"The Boscha thing." Amity sighed. "I don't mind talking about it, you're not a stranger and the whole school knows about it."
Luz's eyes softened. "I'm sorry if she ever did anything bad to you...she's not the nicest person. She's kind of a bully to my friend, Willow."
Amity turned to her. "Yeah, that's a pretty big reason as to why I broke up with her. She never did anything bad to me directly, she just treated me like a prize to be won. Not a person. And when I found out how she treated Willow, it was the last straw..."
"She treats other people like that." Luz sighed. "Sorry. I don't wanna talk bad about your ex or anything."
"Feel free to." Amity said simply. "Willow and I used to be friends."
Luz turned. "Wait, really? Willow's never told me that."
"I...I can see why. We didn't end on the greatest of terms." Amity said. "That's a long story, but I haven't gotten the guts to apologize to her yet...I mean, I always want to! But whenever I try to do it, I just-"
"Freeze up and become so filled with fear that your only instinct is to hide?" Luz asked.
Amity nodded. "Yeah."
Luz giggled. "I know a thing or two about nervousness...but I do think you should talk to Willow. I think she'd appreciate it."
Then, as the two continued to talk and Luz's mind slowly began to be put at ease...something crawled in from the ceiling. Something small. Something barely detectable when actually looking for it.
A spider. Normally, unless there was a fear of them, people wouldn't flinch at the sight of a spider. It usually depended on the type...but this spider?
This spider had a goal. It had strange symbols across its back that were actually glowing in the darkness of the ceiling. The spider spun a web and began to slowly inch downwards.
"So! Moving on from fear...what else do you wanna figure out?" Luz asked.
Amity hummed. "Well. What I wanna be."
"Like when you graduate?" Luz asked.
Amity nodded. "Yup. I'm rich, sure, but so is Hunter and you can hardly even tell. I don't want to be the type of gal who just relies on her dad for every last thing."
Luz smiled. "Yeah! You go, girl!" She then blushed after realizing how loud that was and she covered her mouth.
Amity couldn't help but giggle and she patted Luz's shoulder. "Thanks, Luz."
'HOLYSPIRITABOVE,SHE'STOUCHINGME!!!' Luz thought as her face went red.
"N-n-no problem." She managed to say.
Amity smiled. "But? While I'm probably gonna get a job soon...I think I'm between two careers."
"What's that?" Luz asked.
"Engineering like my dad or archeology." Amity smiled. "I've always liked finding out about the past and discovering something new."
Luz's eyes were a bit wide at that (and the thought of imagining Amity going to tombs like Indiana Jones), and then she smiled. "Both suit you."
"That's what makes it hard to choose." Amity giggled. "What about you?"
"Me?"
"Yeah! We can't just talk about me this whole time." Amity said.
Luz thought for a moment. "Well...I think I'd like to be a writer."
Amity smiled. "A writer?"
"Yeah! Write a book or maybe work on a TV show or movie someday!" Luz smiled. "Be the one the fans always blame for plotholes...y-you probably don't get what that means, heh-"
"You're not the only geek, Noceda." Amity said suddenly. "I'd like to read anything you write if you're willing to let me sometime."
Luz's face flushed and she smiled. "S-sure! I-I could use a critic- OW!"
Amity's eyes widened and she stepped towards her. "Whoa, are you okay!?"
"Y-yeah! I...ow..." Luz said before looking at her hand. She quickly saw a spider on it and smacked it right off. "C-crud, it bit me...ow..."
Amity held her hand and looked at the bite. "It doesn't look that bad...does it hurt?"
"Y-yeah, I...I..."
Suddenly, Luz began to stumble backwards a bit. Her body felt...tired. Her limbs felt weak and were barely able to keep her up. Everything was starting to become a blur.
Luz's eyes then rolled to the back of her head and she fell, but Amity quickly caught her.
"Luz!?!?" Amity screeched as she looked at Luz and gasped at the sight of her being unconscious. "HELP! My friend just went unconscious!!!"
As people rushed over...Amity didn't see the now dead spider on the floor as the glowing symbols left its body.
