Chapter 15
Presley's POV
My gaze couldn't stop drifting off to my mate. Mateo hung around him like a vulture, waiting to translate anything that was said to Charlie and anything my mate would say. He conversed with my mom about the full moon ceremony, heavily including himself in the affair. It was almost as if he were made for this, to be my Luna.
It was painful to be away from Charlie during our hunting trip. I asked how he was constantly, and my mom kept reassuring me that Charlie was fine and that they were bonding. My dad and I had some alone time during the hunting trip, and we were able to finally talk about how he reacted when Charlie had first come home with me. He apologized to me, and he knew he would have to apologize to my mate when the time was right.
My dad made a point to tell me that Charlie reminded him so much of my mom. And I agreed with him. Charlie always kept his head held high, even with the stares he would get that were less than savory from some pack members. It wasn't quite a secret that I had come home with my mate. Most of my pack wouldn't see me until full moon ceremonies; others would just attend pack celebrations like Christmas and Thanksgiving unless I had prompted otherwise. Tonight's ceremony was one where everyone was to attend so I could introduce our new Luna to the pack.
Charlie wouldn't get the powers from my mom until we had our mating ceremony,
"Y'know if you keep staring at him, you might just pierce him with your eyes, nephew." A familiar voice said.
"Hey, uncle Raven." I turned to the short, long-haired omega. With age, his black hair had gotten several streaks of silver in them. His face had weathered from being outside for many hours a day. He had become the pack's first Omegan warrior. Just like my mom, he had trained long and hard to become a warrior alongside his mate, my other uncle, Romeo.
He wasn't biologically related to me in any way, but he was always there for me as a kid. Unfortunately, when I was around five and Adam was one, Raven had found out that he couldn't have kids. It was a memory I remembered vividly. He had come to our house, he cried the entire night on our couch, and my mom just held him and let him let it all out. He always had this glint in his eyes when he watched my siblings and me. As an adult, I realize it was because he wanted kids for himself but never got the chance.
But he didn't let it tear him down, he was given lemons, and he made lemonade with it. He started training to become the pack's first Omegan Warrior, and he had done just that, and to celebrate my uncle, Romeo had gotten him a cat named mittens, which he treated as if it were his child. Like my uncle Ravens hair, the cat was all black, with white paws, hence the name mittens.
Raven waved his hand in front of my face. "Earth to Presley, you alive in there?" He snapped his fingers.
"I am. I was just thinking about mittens." I chuckled.
"Well, mittens is doing good, still fucking knocking over shit on my dresser and running around at three in the morning like a fucking cheetah. We're thinking about getting him a little brother or sister soon." He chuckled at the thought of his feline. "He's getting kinda old, and I'm starting to worry because he's home alone all of the time because we're having to pick up extra patrols."
"I can imagine that little hateful bastard eating a kitten alive."
"Okay, you have a point, but I'll just not listen to that because I'm trying to manifest another pet." Raven chuckled. "Anyways, are you nervous about presenting your mate to the pack today?"
"I mean, I'm nervous because of the family name that is tied to him and how the pack will react to that. My dad kinda didn't help matters by always bringing it up during every summit." I crossed my arms over my chest.
"I understand where your dad is coming from, though. I was there, remember? Your mom was so messed up for a few months afterward, and it was as if he needed to learn how to breathe again. Every spring, when that cherry blossom tree blooms again, it's just a reminder of when he finally healed enough to move on. Then, not long afterward, you came along." He poked my arm. "To be frank with you, your mom wasn't the same after losing your older sibling. It made him stronger, yes, but he still lost a piece of himself with that baby."
I nodded, "Trust me, I still see him sitting under that tree; he would always bring us to sit on the bench under it when it would start to bloom." I recalled the memories.
"When your dad announced to the pack of the death of the pup, you should have been there. You would have been so proud of this pack. No matter the animosity toward omegas during the time, the pack mourned the death of the first alpha heir to your mom and dad." He focused his gaze on my mom. "I feel like it was a pivotal point for this pack. Most of the elders who had apposed to their mating grieved the loss of the pup with your parents. It changed things, and it began the change for the world."
"It still amazes me. I grew up in such a different era. It almost makes the stories my mom told me about some packs during the transition phase of the new law seem like fiction. But I've seen it with my own eyes since becoming alpha, making packs rogue." When I first took over the pack, I didn't know some of the terrors I would see. Packs were given seven years to accept and transition into the new lifestyle to accepting omegas as a mutual part of each pack, and if they didn't, they were made rogue packs. Then we realized some packs were getting sneaky with their abuse of Omega's, which is why we had to interview them separately with anyone there but my mom, a translator like Mateo, and me. It was how we had more packs on our radar now and why the top alpha in each country had to conduct their Audits.
"Trust me, when your uncle Malikai first came to the pack, your mom, your aunt Ella, and I didn't realize just how good we had it here." Raven crossed his arms.
"Yeah." I sighed, running my hand through my hair. "Speak of aunt Ella. How are they doing?" I asked. They lived in another pack now. They had moved back to Joseph's pack and had taken over due to their Alpha refusing to make the changes, but their pack willingly wanted to change and abide by the new law. So the pack reported their alpha, and my dad respected the wishes of their pack, making their alpha rogue.
"They're doing good. They said they'd be coming to your mating ceremony. Whenever that may be." He pursed his lips, side eying me.
"We haven't talked about it yet. I still don't know much about Charlie anyway." I shrugged. "I want nothing more than to claim him in front of the goddess herself. I want nothing more than to show my pack that my mate is mine." I smiled. Charlie glanced my way, making me bore my eyes into his silver ones. I took a deep breath, wanting to go over there, to distract him from whatever he was doing. To have a moment alone before we had to get ready for the ceremony.
"Woah, there sport." Raven clapped his hand on my shoulder, making me growl at the elder omega. "I know our wolves like to get a little frisky on the night of a full moon. But we can't just start eye fuckin' with everyone around. That's how babies are made."
"You know, sometimes you really piss me off," I scrunched my face in anger.
"I mean, I do that for free 99, kid." He smirked. "Anyways, your mom is giving me that stare. You know the one that can make your dad tuck his tale? Yeah, that one. I think I should be helping him out before Charlie's big debut. I'll see ya later, kid." Raven gave me a quick hug before sprinting over to my mom.
—
"Good evening, everyone," I spoke into the mic. My voice echoed in the surrounding forest, and my pack members looked at me with pride. "I'm glad we're here tonight for this beautiful full moon that the goddess's spirit graces us with her light." I inhaled, almost buzzing from the powerful feeling in my bones.
I went over the typical things we went over during the ceremonies, making announcements that needed to be made and plans for the pack's future.
I almost felt unstoppable on full moons. I was at my strongest, meaning my pack was also at its strongest.
"Tonight is a special night, of course; we have everyone here tonight." I smiled, looking out into the crowd. "I'm happy to say that I've found my goddess-given mate." The crowd erupted into cheers. I almost wanted to join them in their cheers. I was happier than everyone in the lot of them. After years of disappointment, without my other half. I had finally found him, and I still couldn't believe I woke up to him every morning.
Charlie stood next to my parents, his arms were crossed, and he was shivering from nerves. He looked precious, wearing all white, opposite of my black attire. The outfit reminded me of the first time I saw him, and it made me miss that moment for just a second. Before everything, it was an innocent moment before we knew each other's name.
"I'm happy to present to you, my mate Charlie Berger, from the Cervo Davante pack." I smiled, holding my hand out for Charlie to come onto the stage. He looked behind himself, and people still cheered; some didn't. It didn't matter, though. They would have to come to love him, just I was starting to.
My mate grabbed my hand, tentatively walking up the old worn stairs to the stage. I leaned in, speaking into his ear where he could hear clearly. "You okay?" I asked. He pulled his head back, meeting my gaze.
"Okay." He gave me a shaky smile, nodding his head. I nodded, giving him a quick peck on the cheek.
He turned toward our pack, giving a brave smile, keeping his head held high to show them his confidence.
"Tonight, we will be accepting Charlie into the pack. He's still learning English, but he's been quick to grab onto our language so far. Mateo will be translating for Charlie until he's able to speak it without much help." I looked down at Mateo, who held his gaze on my mate. I furrowed my brows, not thinking much of it.
I turned my focus onto my mate standing next to me. I faced him, motioning him to do the same. I placed the mic I had been speaking into on its stand. Next to the mic stand was a table with a sterile knife to perform the acceptance ceremony to our pack and bandages for me to wrap his hand up with. I grabbed the blade, holding my hand out for him to place it in mine. Obliging, I brought the knife to his palm, slicing the skin of his palm open. He let out a slight hiss of pain, I let go of his hand, and he grabbed his wrist, holding it up, waiting for me. I repeated my actions, cutting my palm open as I'd done several times before.
I connected our hands, repeating the words of acceptance to our pack. I could feel Charlie's connection to the pack link, making us smile.
"Welcome to the Riverfalls pack, angel." Charlie stood on his tippy toes, eyes fluttering shut, pressing his lips to mine.
