Chapter 4: Jack
I sniff the air, growling. My green wolf eyes flashing. It was nighttime and I had decided to go on patrol with only Alika.
Alika, hearing me growl, stops. Leaves were clinging to her acorn brown fur. Her dark gold eyes assaulting me with questions. I switch back to human form as did she.
"I've lost Cal's scent yet again!" I mutter. Alika smiles sympathetically.
"We just have to accept that Cal is truly gone, Jack." I shake my head. I refused. I would never stop looking for my pack member even if it killed me. Alika shrugs.
"Do you need me anymore?" She asks, picking a leaf out of her hair.
"No, not anymore." I was still disappointed.
"Alright, well I'm just going to head back to the house. If I'm not needed I don't see any reason to stick around." And with that said, she turns back to a wolf and darts off.
Great now I was disappointed and alone. I familiar scent drifts my way and I crouch low. A pure black furred wolf trudges through the undergrowth, red eyes filled with worry. I guess he didn't notice me crouched where I was, either that or he was way too busy to notice me. He continues on his way.
I shift to my wolf form, ignoring the SilverAsh's boundary line and follow discreetly behind him.
Is this a bad idea?

A few feet ahead of me, Mark turns back to human. I lay down where I was, hoping my gray streaked brown fur would blend in with my surroundings, and it did.
"Lady Celeste?" Mark calls out quietly, approaching the water's edge. A small red haired girl's face surfaces. My ears flatten against my head. "You wanted me?"
A soft sigh was heard among the wind. "Dearest cousin, there is a plague within this town." Mark sits down, staring down into the water.
"What do you mean 'a plague'?" The voice, Lady Celeste, sighs.
"There is trouble brewing in the distance. All it takes is one small thing to unleash the storm of destruction."
What the hell is that person talking about. More or less, what drugs are they on?
"Lady Celeste," Mark sighs. "I have no idea what you are trying to say."
"You know I cannot help you, little alpha. The words are for you to decipher. However I can see in the future that two packs will become one." I watch as Mark rubs his eyes.
"Yeah, okay." He mutters. "How are Bob and Wade doing?"
"Wade's dead." (So sorry Wade!! *hugs Wade) I saw Mark's back straighten. Whoever this Wade person is, they probably meant something to the SilverAsh's alpha.
"No," his voice cracks. "How'd he die?"
"Some masked guy drove by and shot at Bob. Wade, being the good friend that he was, took the hit instead. I'm sorry, Mark." There was sniffling.
"And Bob? What about Bob?"
"Bob is well but as you can imagine he is upset, just like the rest of us." I felt like I was intruding, which I know I was, but this wasn't for my ears.
"Give Auntie hugs and kisses from me cousin."
"I will Lady Celeste." And it grew silent. Mark backs away from the waters edge. I felt bad for him when I saw him curl up into a ball and start to cry.
God damn it! I want to console him but I'm so scared that he is going to attack me as soon as I step out. I stand on all four paws. You know what, screw it.
"Mark?" I call out, stepping from the brush when I turned human again. Mark stands up, brown eyes flashing with red flecks as tears poured down his face.
"What are you doing on my territory!" He growls, baring his fangs. I wrap my arms around him, knowing this could get me killed by him. He was tense.
"I heard what happened Mark, and I just wanted to say I'm sorry," I was surprised that the words came out of my mouth.
Mark stood there in shock. I felt stupid until he wrapped his arms around me and started to cry on my shoulder. I rub his back. Yes, he is my enemy but it's tough when you lose a friend from another pack or a pack member.
I continue to rub his back what felt like another ten minutes before he pulled away.
"Thanks," he sniffles, wiping away the remaining tears. I nod, running my fingers through my hair uncomfortably.
"Yeah, yeah. This doesn't change anything though. We are still enemies," I mumble causing Mark to chuckle.
"Right, so I'm going to let you get a head start on getting off of my territory before I kick your wolf butt." Now it was my turn to smile.
"You wish," I said walking away. This felt so natural, as if we had been friends for years. But we're suppose to be enemies, that's what we have been taught all of our lives. It couldn't hurt to at least try to be friends for once, could it?
