Chapter 20: Mark

At first there was noise. I heard Jack scream my name, my eyes had closed as soon as she fired the gun. And then there was nothing, no pain, nothing. I open my eyes and screamed.

"EDEN!" was the only word that rang out across the room. It was dead silent. Nobody dared to move. Nobody dared to breathe.

I yank my hand out of Jack's and caught Eden as her legs buckled. My eyes mist over as I saw a red spot on her shoulder grow bigger by the second. "Eden why!" I cried. She smiles a little bit.

"Because, Mark," she whispers so quietly that I could barely hear her. "This was my destiny as a deputy, not yours." She coughs, blood spraying everywhere when she does. Tears stream down my face. I hear Alika sobbing quietly. Even Cassidy and Lady Celeste froze, surprised.

"Eden, please don't go... Not you too!" I sob.

"Your real destiny is with Jack," she croaks, gasping for air. "I believe in you Mark, never forget that." Eden gives a shuddering breath, her last breath, and then she was still. Her eyes, fixed on nothing.

Eden. She was always there for me whenever I need her. Eden. The woman who was strong and lead whenever I couldn't. Eden. My best friend since I was four, my deputy, my right arm woman, was now dead. And it was caused by someone who I thought I could trust.

"You!" I growl, my eyes flashing as I glare at Lady Celeste. She stares back at me wide eyed, dropping the gun.

"Y-you were supposed to die, n-n-not Eden!" She screams, charging towards me.  I snarl, turning into a wolf, and lunged into the air. When I met her in the air, I sink my canines into her neck, blood lust gleaming in my eyes as she screamed. By the time my paws landed back on the ground, her throat was torn to shreds and I had no memory of this.

Cassidy tried to escape, but Jack caught her as well. The ultimate punishment for betraying an alpha is death and that's exactly what happened to Cassidy.

Dan and Felix help free the others while Alika bent sobbing over Eden.

"My friend!" She screams, burying her face into Eden's shoulder crying even harder. "Why did you leave me!"

I bow my head in sorrow, feeling Jack's fingers consoling stroking my fur. Everyone surrounds Eden, sobbing. Dan held Phil as sobs rack through his body. Alika continues to wail at the loss of her best friend.

"She did something that takes guts," Jack says quietly. Tears were also streaming down his face. "She did the number one thing that she was suppose to do, she did her job as being a pack deputy. She protected Mark. That was the job she was born to do. The job she was given. And she did just that. Eden will never be forgotten, she will always live in our hearts forever." The sobs continue. Through misty eyes, I look at Eden one more time.

Goodbye forever, my best friend. May you find peace wherever you are now. And through the grief and sobs, I tilt my head back and howl a sorrowful song for Eden.
