Ch 17: Poison Oak

Axel pushes through the door roughly and points his gun. I come up beside him and crouch, gun pointed forward. Nobody seems to be around.

"What kind of place doesn't have guards?" Axel frowns. I shrug over at him and sniff the air.

"There's at least five people near us. And I'm not counting the ones in the basement," I whisper and look around for an exit. The only clue is a locked door.

"Of course its locked!!" Axel exclaims, throwing his hands in the air. I glare at him and start looking through drawers.

"Watch the door while I search," I keep tearing through drawers until I come across a folder labeled 'classified'. I don't bother reading it, instead, I shove it into the waistband of my stolen shorts.

"What'd you find?"

"I'm not sure, but its called 'classified'. You know how my dad is, he'll want to know," I shrug and walk up to the door. I rembered that I had keys from Remi that I could use.

I turn around and lock the basement door, and shove a chair under the door knob. I hadn't thought of it before, but that other girl I found, could've had keys.

"Let's get out of here," I say and shove several keys into the lock. After the third one, it jiggles open with a low growl. We raise our guns and peek around the door frame.

I make a motion for Axel to follow as we move forward into the next room. I swear, this group is trying to make a real life horror game!

The next door isn't locked, but I definitely hear voices on the other side. We glance at each other and look for extra ammo. We both load our guns to full, and shove the rest of the bullets in our pockets.

I twist open the door and hold my gun in front of me. A tall male turns around and growls. Axel snarls and steps toward him. I keep my gun raised, as Axel lowers his. He always preferred hand to hand combat rather than gun fights. Axel dives at him and takes out his legs.

I watch the door, waiting for more to come. And, they do. Several others burst through the door. I start shooting and easily take out at least two. I hear grunts behind me as they continue to fight. I tuck my gun back into my pocket and punch a girl in the face.

She backs away, screaming and crying. Another guys jumps at me from the side and gets a good punch in before I kick him in the jaw. I slam my feet on to his toes, hearing a sickening crunch before kicking him again. He falls backwards, hands flailing, he hits a painting off the wall and pierces himself in the eye. The girl continues screaming.

"If you don't shut up, I'll put a bullet through your head," I yell, as I punch someone else in the face. I notice Axel is back at my side and is punching several other guys.

The only reason we haven't shifted yet is because we can't do it fast enough. Plus, its hard to use a gun with paws, you know?

I rush forward and slam the door closed, and Axel holds it shut. I push a desk in front of it and sigh.

"If you didn't have a mate, I swear I would be all over you right now," Axel smirks at me and roll my eyes. I turn back to the girl and she's crying in the corner.

"You must be an intern," I raise an eyebrow. She lifts her head and nods. I sigh.
"I suggest you quit working here."

She nods again, and I help her up.

"What's the quickest way out of here?" Axel asks. She turns to him and their eyes lock. I feel electricity in the air as Axel mumbles 'mate'.

She turns away, shy. I would be too, I mean, she just witnessed like, 5 murders. Axel continues staring at her, and she stares at the floor.

"Axel. We have to go, " I pull his sleeve and he actually whimpers. Whimpers.

"What's your name?" He asks her. She glances up into his eyes and whispers.

"Crystal."

"I'll find you later, Crystal. Wait for me," he wipes a tear from her eye and turns toward the only window we've seen so far.

"How far do you think that drop is?" I ask him, breaking the silence. He jerks toward me and shrugs.

"Looks to be about 20 feet, or more."

"Should we take our chances with that, or the twenty people outside that door, wanting to kill us?" I'm already walking towards the window, because I know what we're going to do.

He smiles and opens the window.

"Ladies first."

"What a gentleman," I say, my words laced in sarcasm.

I punch out the screen and sit on the ledge. I shove myself forward and start free falling through the air. I hold back a scream, it fails, and I shriek.

I hear Axel yelling as he flys towards the ground above me, I land with a loud thud and roll out if the way. Axel lands beside me, less than a second later. We nod at each other and stand up.

I reach for my gun and pull it out. It survived the fall, luckily. There's several people pointing their guns at us and shouting. We back up, against the wall and scurry around the side.

"We have to run," I yell, through all the loud commotion. He frowns.

"I don't want to leave her," he whines. I reach up and slap him.

"Axel! You will find her again, for now, we have to run!" I'm screaming in his face at this point. I grab his wrist and pull him out if the shadows and towards the thick forest.

We keep running even if our feet are sore and our hand are bleeding from all the twigs and leaves cutting us. We zoom over rocks and sticks, only stumbling occasionally. We stop after about 5 miles are in between us and our kidnappers.

"We should've taken her with us,' he cries, sitting on a broken log. I sit next to him.

"It was for the best, Axel. We had to, for our survival and hers," he knows I'm right, but continues crying. I drop my gun and shift.

Mind-linking him, I comfort his wolf.
'There, there, Axel. All will be well. But, not for long. I can sense they are near.'

Axel looks up and nods. He drops his gun and shifts as well. We pick out guns back up, in our mouths, and sniff out the direction of out pack.

'Were going to run into several rogues. Are you prepared for such a thing?' Axels wolf mind-links me as we trot beside each other. We don't want to run because we are extremely exhausted.

'I can handle it just fine. But, we are so far from home.' My wolf and his continue mind-linking for several more minutes until we hear noise. We drop our guns and growl.

'Rogues.' He growls, ears pressed against his skull, teeth bared. A wolf jumps though the trees and lands in front of us.

'You're on our land,' the mysterious wolf huffs. I sit back up and tilt my head.

'You sound familiar. State your name and pack,' I command him, growling. He rolls his eyes.

'My name is David, of Poison Oak. You met me at the party. Now, get off our land,' he tries to be threatening, but it doesn't work. Not when you're the daughter of the scariest person- the Alpha.

'I am Ember Caste of the Blue Mountain pack and future Alpha. I demand to speak to your Alpha at once,' I stomp my paw down, and he lowers his head, growling. He's been outranked by me. He turns around and gestures for us to follow him. Axel and I exchange a wary look and reluctantly follow him.
