Chapter 40
She was finally placed in their bed after Gaia and Nikki cleaned her up.
"Her breathing is back to normal. But she has not woken up yet."
Gaia mentioned as she left him alone.
Maddox sat at her side and tried mentally reaching out to her but he couldn't. Her fingers lay cool and clammy in his hands as he pressed his lips to them. He fought for control the moment he saw the pinpricks of Dantés fangs on her neck.
He bit her and fed off of her, the son of a bitch. It took all of 3 wolves, Michael and Brody to tackle him to the ground to keep him from killing Danté.
Tears flooded his eyes with the thought of nearly losing her. His scent, although slightly faded, still lingered on her skin and it burned his gut with disgust. He did not understand. If she had the ability to defend herself from him, why didn't she?
So many questions whirled in his mind with what happened and he was not going to get them from her. Not like this.
He stood and began to pace. He felt impotent and furious that he could not protect her.
"How is she?" Brody asked standing at the door.
He turned to face his cousin. To hide his emotions from him was useless because every Wolf on the compound was feeling it. The doubt, the anger, the sadness. His pain and fear more than ever.
"Her..." he paused and looked at her in the bed. "Her...color is coming back. She's breathing better."
Brody slowly stepped forward.
"He umm..." Brody stopped to look away from her. His unchecked emotions matched the rest. To see her like this was heart-wrenching. "he wants to talk to you."
A low growl formed in his throat as Brody finished talking. His skin prickled as his fur was threatening to shoot out from his skin. Koda wanted out. His teeth slowly pricked the surface of his gum. Tightening his eyes shut he fought against the wolf. Dominating him until he cowered down and walked away.
"What does he want?" Maddox's voice was a raw mixture of his and Koda's.
Brody lowered his head. Instinct overpowered his devotion to his cousin. His Alpha was present.
"He insists to only speak to you."
Maddox flexed his shoulders. His gaze landed softly on Hannah's sleeping form before he turned to walk out of the room.
He needed answers.
As if the devil were on his heels, he took large quick strides through the house and stepped outside towards the cellars until he reached the stall where Danté was being held.
"Leave." He growled with anger. "NOW!" the alpha voice echoed throughout the cellar. The vibration shook the walls that the soldiers jumped and walked away.
The slight clink of chains broke the silence in the dim-lit room.
"Maddox I..." Danté spoke.
"Don't...I suggest you think very clearly on what you are about to tell me," Maddox warned him.
The chains rattled again. followed by a brief silence.
"How is she?"
Maddox let out a humorless chuckle. "You have some nerve asking that, considering the fact you are the reason she is like that."
"I did not mean to..." he began.
"Yea, well what were you meaning to do? Spite me by hurting her? Turn her over to your demon king?"
"Never..." Danté hissed.
He turned to look at Dante, noticing how he had changed. He frowned. He wasn't used to seeing his formidable enemy in chains, defeated, thin, and looking weak.
"I never meant to hurt her. It just all got out of my control. I felt things I haven't felt in ages. One thing led to the next and... I kissed her...."
"You what?" Maddox felt his stomach drop. He was hearing things.
A blind rage slowly began to brew within him as he stalked close to Danté and dragged him up by his shirt and pinned him to the wall.
Nothing but fear and tears formed in Danté's eyes.
"You son of a bitch, you put your hands on her?" Maddox shook him fiercely.
"It was only a kiss. I swear." Dante sobbed.
"Don't swear a damn thing. You took advantage of her. Advantage of her innocence. Because a fucking monster like you would have never gotten that far." Maddox shouted.
"Did you touch her?" Maddox's eyes slowly changed blood red and his teeth began to lengthen before Dante's eyes.
Danté did not respond. He lowered his head ready for the kill. The excruciating pain of being slammed into the wall was all his aging battered body could withstand. He committed the ultimate offense, and for that, he must pay.
"Answer me," Maddox roared and the walls shook.
Minutes passed as he grabbed Danté by the throat and squeezed.
The gurgled gasps and choking sounds were all he wanted to hear as he battled with squeezing the life out of him or simply beating him to a bloody pulp.
"Maddox that's enough," Brody began struggling with him and trying to pry his hands from Dante's throat. The three struggled until Brody begged him to calm down.
"You don't want to do this Bro, let him go," Brody held him in a chokehold on the ground.
Slowly Maddox let him go. Shoving him away until he fell back in a massive heap gasping for air.
He slowly stood as Brody stood before him. Preventing him from lunging at Danté again.
"It is only because of the accords; it's forbidden to harm humans that I can't fucking kill you. But you better hope that what you did hasn't affected Hannah. Because if it has your gonna wish you were never born."
His head hung between his shoulders unable to look up into those eyes filled with rage. With those words left in the air, Maddox left him there and walked off.
Danté's skin prickled with the idea that if her blood affected him. What had his venom done to her? Did it affect her in any way? The questions swirled in his mind with no answers in return. Shakily, he lifted his hand noticing how they were no longer youthful-looking. They ached and trembled.
"You're rapidly aging," the warm feminine voice filled the quiet air in the stall.
He looked up and watched Gaia slowly approach. The moon Goddess slowly knelt before him and lifted his chin up to observe him.
"Did you know this is what happens when a demon drinks Angelic blood?" Danté asked in earnest. Seeking answers to his most puzzled question.
Gaia shook her head with a sad gaze filled with pity.
"No, there has never been an incident like this that I know of." She said.
"Besides the Archangels fighting in the demonic wars from the past. Hannah is the only celestial being that has come into contact with a dark being." She looked at him.
A moment of silence passed before she shifted some and looked at him. " you have feelings for her. Don't you?" His gaze snapped up to hers in surprise only to soften as he nodded.
"Please tell me she is okay," his voice pleaded faintly.
Gaia nodded with a sad smile. " She still sleeps. She hasn't woken up yet."
"I should have never taken her, " he shook his head furiously.
Gaia sat silent and listened to him.
"I couldn't stop myself. The cravings were too strong. The attraction and the need to touch her and make her mine was beyond my control. Something about her just rendered me senseless." he frowned trying to understand then looked at her for answers.
"She is a celestial being with abilities that are far beyond even our knowledge, nothing like this has ever happened. It's new and mysterious. But what I do know is that she is fated to be with Maddox. She is his mate."
"Why could it not have been me, " his face contorted with pain and an air of jealousy could be felt with that question."
Sadly Gaia lowered her head. "They were soul-bound from before their own creation, Danté. Whether she crossed your path first, you would have lost her to Maddox regardless." She sighed with an immense sadness watching him struggle to accept those words.
He slouched against the wall unable to say anything else.
Gaia took that time to slowly stand and leave.
"I think I understand why she was chosen to defeat my King, " he murmured.
She stopped and look at him before his head lifted to look at her.
"She is the key, her blood is the key."
