Part 25: Aurora
Today is the day, the day I finally break free from his grasp. It's been just a few days since the incident, and Rylan has yet to visit me again. Word has it that he's out hunting Ethan, and I can only hope that he won't find him. But his absence offers an opportunity I can't afford to miss. Initially, he kept me confined to the wing, but now I'm allowed to roam again within the palace, under the very watchful eyes of my ever-vigilant guards.
I've been carefully plotting my escape, and the time has come to put my plan into action. If I'm wrong about this, if I fail, I know that I'll likely be confined to the wing once more. But I can't let fear hold me back; I must escape and reclaim my freedom.
Ethan's enigmatic words have been haunting my thoughts since he left, and I've been obsessively pondering their meaning. "Just remember Auntie Chui and the summer solstice," he said before vanishing. I've racked my brain, recalling every detail I know about Miss Chui and the stories she's shared with us.
Miss Chui often spoke about her dream of visiting a particular mountain during the summer solstice. She would point it out on the skyline, yearning to reach it. It's possible that Ethan's message is a clue, urging me to head for that mountain. After all, I have no clear destination once I escape, and this seems like a starting point.
But before I can even consider where to head, I must escape. To do that, I must decipher Ethan's other cryptic reference: "Auntie Chui." We've always addressed her as "Miss Chui," so something seems off about this. Then it clicks – Miss Chui once mentioned stories about her great aunt, who served as a concubine to a former king. This king had an unusual preference for human women over she-wolves.
As I delve into the tales I've heard about Miss Chui's great aunt, I finally have my breakthrough. In one of her stories, she spoke of her great aunt's constant need to utilize a secret passage to escape the king's chambers before his queen returned. A secret passage! But where is it? I wrack my brain further and recall a mention of the gallery. It all starts to come together, and I'm determined to find this secret passage and make my escape.
As I return to my wing with the guards in tow, I inform them that I'm going to inspect the gallery. Despite my intention to act like I'm thoroughly examining the artwork, they continue to watch me closely, never letting their guard down. I need to find a way to test if the large painting at the end of the room conceals a secret passage, but my vigilant guards make it nearly impossible. I have noticed that despite the paintings being rotated with others in the palace, this particular one has always stayed the same.
Just when it seems I'm stuck in a tight spot, my feline companions, seemingly attuned to my predicament, launch themselves at the guards, creating a momentary distraction. It's as if they understand my need for a perfect opportunity.
Taking advantage of the distraction, I pull on the painting with all my might, and to my amazement, it begins to open like a concealed door. My heart races as I quickly shut it again before the guards can notice. Now I have confirmation – I know how to escape. All I need is the right moment to put my plan into action.
As the day transitions into night, and the time for the guards to set up the chains approaches, I know I have to think fast. Escaping the chains is nearly impossible, so I need to devise a different plan. Faking tears, I turn to Aldric, attempting to convey a sense of desperation.
"Please, Aldric, can we skip the chains tonight? I can't bear feeling trapped any longer," I plead, letting real tears flow as I contemplate my dire situation.
Aldric hesitates, aware of the orders he's received. "Luna, I'm sorry, but we must follow the orders," he responds.
I acknowledge his concern and then continue, knowing I need to make him see things my way. "I know, I know. But he just said either someone needs to be with me or I need to be chained."
Understanding where I am going with this he says, "Luna it would not be appropriate to be in your room while you are sleeping." He responds but I anticipated this. "That's true, but what if we keep the door open and you wait here, coming to check on me in intervals?"
I present the idea with my sad eyes and push "please Aldric, those chains make me feel like less than an animal. I thought I was supposed to be a queen."
Aldric appears torn, finally relenting. "All right, Luna. We'll skip the chains for tonight, but the door must remain wide open. I'll be checking on you frequently and any time I hear movement."
Gratefully, I nod and open the door wide. Crawling into bed, I settle in as Aldric takes up his position just outside the room, ensuring he keeps a watchful eye on me as I prepare for my impending escape.
The plan is unfolding flawlessly. Earlier in the night, I had discreetly added an herb to Aldric's tea, an herb Rylan had given me to induce deep sleep during restless nights. I've been waiting for the right moment, and now it has come. I know it's time to make my escape.
As I tiptoe past Aldric, he's clearly under the influence of the potent herb. He doesn't stir as I check on him, assuring he's deep in slumber. I proceed to the gallery and carefully open the hidden passage behind the painting. It's surreal; I'm really making my escape. Part of me will miss Rylan, and there's a deep pang of sadness as I think of my kittens, but his actions have left me with no other choice. I'll also miss the friends I've made here, especially Kiara, who will take care of my beloved feline companions. I had used their earlier attack as an excuse to leave them with Kiara for the night. I have to leave. I can't be the obedient mate they all want me to be. I must find my own path, a way to help my people and make a difference.
After what feels like an eternity of wandering through the dimly lit passages, I finally reach a door. I crack it open cautiously and realize it leads out of one of the paintings in the palace halls. There's no one in sight, which is a small stroke of luck. I snatch a lit torch nearby, thankful for the light, and continue my journey through the passage. With each step, my heart races, but I'm resolute in my purpose.
I do my best to recall the layout of the palace, relying on my memory to navigate my way out. Eventually, I come upon a door that leads to the outside. It's conveniently located on a side of the palace with fewer people around. The door resembles more of a crawlspace, but I seize the opportunity and make my escape. I manage to evade the guards on duty and slip into the shadows of the woods, heading in the direction of the mountain. It's beautifully illuminated by the moonlight, a beacon of hope guiding me forward. So many things could go wrong, but I've come this far, and I must press on.
As I venture deeper into the woods, I can't help but feel a mix of exhilaration and fear. The cool night air caresses my face, and the moonlight paints a silver path before me. I'm alone, far from the oppressive walls of the palace, and I'm free.
But with freedom comes uncertainty. The night is alive with unknown sounds, and the woods conceal mysteries of their own. I need to find Ethan and reunite with the rebellion. The burden of my escape weighs on me, knowing that my actions have put others at risk. There's no turning back now, though. The mountain looms in the distance, and I take my first step toward what lies ahead, a world of challenges and choices I've never faced before.
In the depths of this transformation, I realize that Aurora, the timid human, will no longer be the passive observer in this world of werewolves. The time has come for her to rise, to find her strength, and to confront the cruelty and injustice that surrounds her. The path ahead is treacherous, but I am ready to face it, not as a prisoner, but as a warrior determined to rewrite the story of this dark and fractured realm.
