Part 12: Aurora

My kittens have become a source of immense joy in this dark world. It was a kind gesture on Rylan's part, especially since I can tell that he isn't overly fond of them. I believe he sees them as unnecessary nuisances, but he treats them with kindness for my sake, and I'm genuinely grateful for that.

It's clear that having other animals in his "territory" makes his wolf uneasy, so I've been making a conscious effort to keep the kittens far away from his reach when his wolf emerges. It almost feels like I have both kittens and a puppy now. Rylan may not appreciate me comparing his wolf to a puppy, but I can't help myself; he behaves in such a playful and affectionate manner with me.

However, I mustn't forget that to everyone else, his wolf is a fierce and formidable presence. I have to remind myself that Rylan is ruthless, too. Lately, it's become increasingly challenging as he continues to display acts of kindness and tenderness. I can't afford to let my guard down.

I've neglected my reading and nearly forgotten about my search for escape routes. I can't give up, even if I'm growing closer to him and find comfort in his embrace. My determination to regain my freedom and maintain my sense of self remains crucial, no matter how tempting the bond between us becomes.

Today, I find myself in the main sitting room, engrossed in my book while playing with my kittens. The final pages of my book are nearing, thanks to Rylan's method of using dots to help me learn. I've acquired a vast amount of knowledge, but it's essential to remember that I'm learning all of this for a purpose, a purpose that is more significant than myself.

The maids have thoughtfully brought tea and sweet snacks for me, making my time even more enjoyable. Rylan and I have started to dine together every night, and he's been quite insistent about my eating habits. I can't help it; I'm not accustomed to consuming large meals regularly. In the past, if I felt full, I would stop eating immediately, knowing that the food could benefit others. However, Rylan insists that I adhere to what he calls the recommendations of "experts" regarding suitable human meal portions. I've been making an effort to follow his guidance.

He's also less strict during meals if I indulge in snacks like these during the day. It's a luxury I've never known, and I've developed an absolute obsession with the sweets. Rylan warns me not to consume too many of them, as he expects me to finish a proper meal. I understand his concern, but the allure of these delectable treats is undeniable.

As I indulge in yet another sweet, I hear the grand doors open and watch Rylan stride into the room. Confusion washes over me because he usually doesn't return until dinner time. My bewilderment deepens when I realize he's not alone. Two others accompany him. The prospect of interacting with new people excites me, but I'm also slightly apprehensive because I can tell they're werewolves, likely nobles given their attire.

With a mix of curiosity and politeness, I stand and approach Rylan, uncertain about how to act in this unexpected situation. The newcomers, a man and a woman, appear to be a couple based on their closeness. The woman is absolutely stunning, with beautiful brown skin and cascading, curly black hair. The man, while not as striking as Rylan, exudes a certain handsomeness. He has lighter hair and a warm smile.

Rylan places an arm around my waist and introduces them. "Aurora, this is one of my most trusted generals, Caelum, and this is his mate, Kiara. They are fated mates, just like us."

I'm fascinated by the notion of meeting other fated mates, which I've learned are quite rare. Perhaps I can learn more about this unique bond from them. The man speaks first, addressing me, "Hello, Luna. It is a pleasure to meet you." The use of "Luna" takes me aback; it's a title that I've learned is meant for me as Rylan's mate, but hearing it out loud is still a bit surreal. The lovely woman adds, "Yes, Luna, we are honored to meet you."

As Rylan speaks, my heart quickens, his deep voice capturing our attention. "We have matters to discuss," he declares, nodding at Caelum. For a fleeting moment, I fear that I won't get the chance to interact with them, but then he adds, "Why don't you and Kiara get to know each other?"

A surge of happiness mixed with anxiety courses through me, and I feel my shyness creeping in. "Um, okay. Would you like some tea or snacks?" I stammer, trying to play the role of a host, a strange feeling that this is becoming my space.

"That sounds wonderful," Kiara responds with a warm smile, and I lead her over to the sitting area. Rylan and Caelum depart for the study, and as Rylan kisses my cheek before leaving, I can't help but blush.

As the door closes behind them, Kiara playfully says, "Well, now that the men are gone, we can really talk." I can't help but smile; I have a feeling I'm going to like Kiara. She seems kind and friendly.

"So, Aurora, I heard about the circumstances of your coming here. I would like to offer my apologies for what happened to your people. I came to this castle under similar circumstances," Kiara begins, her words and sympathy shocking me.

"Really?" I reply, my curiosity piqued.

"I was part of a pack that had resisted the king's rule. His men were sent to make us submit. It was a horrid bloodbath, and that's when I met Caelum, my mate, fighting against everything I held dear," she shares. The similarity between our experiences is striking.

"And what did you do? How did you help your people?" I ask, hoping for guidance.

"Eventually, I had to move on from what had happened. I had to separate my mate from the things he had done to my people, trusting that he would see my perspective and help me in the end," Kiara explains.

"And did he?" I inquire, eager to learn more about her journey.

She sighs and answers, "He did, in his own way. We had to work past our differences and embrace the bond that we were blessed with." Kiara appears content, and it's clear that she has found a balance with her mate.

Our conversation continues, and we share more about our lives. Kiara even starts sharing some palace gossip, and we laugh together. It's surprising how quickly we've become friends, and I'm grateful for Kiara's presence and understanding.

We talk endlessly, the hours passing in the blink of an eye, until eventually, it begins to get late. Rylan and Caelum enter from the study, and Caelum approaches Kiara, while Rylan takes me in his strong arms. Caelum's words break the warm atmosphere, "It is getting late, my love. I think it is time to take our leave."

Kiara nods and pulls me in for a quick hug, a gesture that elicits a slight growl from Rylan, though he manages to keep his temper in check. "See you soon?" Kiara asks, and I look to Rylan for his approval. He nods, and both Kiara and I can't help but smile.

We bid our goodbyes, and Caelum and Kiara depart. Rylan pulls me onto his lap, nuzzling my neck. "What do you think of Kiara?" he asks.

"I love her!" I respond enthusiastically.

"Good, I'm glad, sweetheart. I think you two will be good friends." He seems genuinely happy for me. "It's dinner time; let's eat," Rylan suggests, lifting me to carry me to the dining table. We share a pleasant meal, and I tell him about my new friend.

As the evening progresses, what Kiara told me about her and her mate continues to gnaw at my mind. I decide that it's time to address my concerns with Rylan, hoping for a more receptive response this time. It didn't go well the first time, but maybe tonight will be different.

After dinner, Rylan and I went through the material I had marked in my book, and now we're spending some time playing with the kittens before heading to bed. Well, I'm playing with the kittens, and he's watching me. I decide that now is the right moment to talk to him.

"Um, Rylan?" I say, looking at him.

"Yes, little one?" he responds, appearing eager to address whatever is on my mind. Encouraged by this, I continue, choosing my words carefully. "I know you didn't want to discuss this further, but I can't let it go."

He sighs, displaying some annoyance, but I press on. "I can't get my mind off my people. I know you want me to accept your mark, but I can't do that while my thoughts are consumed with their well-being."

I expect him to be upset, but instead, he calmly says, "I understand, sweetheart. Come here." I'm taken aback by his response, but it seems like I'm making progress, so I move closer to him. He nuzzles my neck and continues, "Your people have been spared from the typical fate of rebels."

I'm visibly shocked and meet his gaze, asking, "Really?"

"Yes, really. I had them handled with care because of what they mean to you. They are adjusting to life in human society," he says, surprising me even more.

"All of them?" I inquire.

"The ones who cooperated, love. I cannot let dangerous people roam freely," he responds, and I'm genuinely impressed by the compassion he's shown. My biggest hope was that they were alive and not imprisoned, so this news is more than I dared to expect.

I don't want to fight him on this. I've heard about the typical fate that awaits rebels, and this is a mercy. Perhaps, slowly but surely, I can make this life work and bring some good to my people.

I nuzzle up to him, openly accepting his embrace, and he places a tender kiss on my forehead. Relief washes over me, and he soothes my worries by rubbing gentle circles on my back. As weariness starts to overcome me, he carries me to bed, but instead of taking me to my room, he pauses.

"Little one?" he asks softly.

"Hmm," I respond, feeling sleepiness creeping in.

"Could you stay with me tonight?" he requests.

I'm content with how today went and how much I've enjoyed his company, so I reply with a soft "okay." He carries me to his room, and by this point, I'm too tired to even look around. I simply nestle into his embrace and fall asleep.
