The Alleycats' Christmas Again

Rocky enters the junkyard, stepping over pieces of rusty gate scattered on the ground. He walks to the post, his shoes crunching the fallen snow.

Rocky ascends the stairs, a bag in his hand and good news to share. He reaches the porch and lets himself in, to where Evie is sitting on the couch.

"Rocky, where have you been? It's Christmas." She says, getting up and crossing over to him.

"I got you something." He says, reaching in the bag. He pulls out a velvet box and hands it to her.

"You didn't have to get me anything. I didn't get you anything." Evie says, her voice barely above a whisper.

"You gave me you." Rocky says, a sparkle in his eye. "Open the box."

Evie opens it and gasps at what's inside. Two diamond earrings, shimmering in the light.

"Rocky, thank you!" She exclaims. "They're beautiful!"

"And, I got some news." He says, sitting on the couch arm.

                        "What is it?"

"I met a guy in the city. He offered me a job. Said we could be out of here by New Year's."

"Out of here? But the Keller Yard's been our whole life since high school."

"I know, but, I'm your husband. I'm about to be a dad. I've got a dog who thinks scrapped drainage pipes are fetching sticks. Isn't it time that I get us out of here? That I bring us back to living?"

                      "What's the job?"

"Just a gofer-type gig, run packages around the city. It's no big deal." Evie comes over to sit on Rocky's lap, and lays her head on his shoulder.

"Maybe it is time we move on." She whispers. "But tonight, can we just have Christmas?"

"Of course, baby." He says, kissing the top of her hair.
