Chapter 17

Meanwhile at Elena's office...

Oliver arrived fifteen minutes after Isabella and Miranda. Elena put him to work immediately.

She took multiple folders off the table and handed them over, "File these for me and don't touch anything else."

"While they're having fun, I'm stuck doing paperwork?"

"I don't doubt your capabilities to carry out simple tasks. This might even come across as more valuable than you think."

"Mind games won't work."

"I didn't plan one."

He reluctantly accepted the papers, beginning to divide each into piles. As Oliver was sifting through the stack, the computer caught his eye. Its screensaver seemed more animated than usual.

"Could Elena have been talking about this? Whatever, she always sounds cryptic."

He clicked on an icon and a dozen more moving pictures showed up. One zoomed in and out on people turning around a corner on the sidewalk. Others focused entirely on different places. They ranged from rooftops to alleyways. He stopped when recognizing a green apartment building.

"That's my house. Wait, this isn't an altering screensaver. It's a bunch of security cameras."

Suddenly, a red light blinked at the top of the computer. The footage flipped back to the sidewalk corner. There was no sound, but Oliver could see the situation. A dark-skinned boy, probably in his mid-teenage years, walked by. However, he didn't make it far before two gold-masked figures came up behind him. Each exchanged a few words with the boy. When he didn't do what they wanted, there was some resistance on his end to get away from them. Oliver couldn't tell at the exact moment, but one fighter disappeared. The other threw a few punches. His opponent reached out a hand to prevent himself from collapsing against the concrete, to no avail. Instead, he managed to knock the fighters mask off his face and lay unconscious on the ground. The masks shiny material caught the sunlight at every angle and was pushed further into the cameras line of sight when an invisible force moved beside it. While Oliver saw the boy being taken away, a small crack formed in the corner of the picture. Then it spread into two more, blocking his sight. Within seconds, the screen glitched and turned black. He stared in utter shock at his reflection.

"I have to retrieve this footage. That corner isn't too far from here."

Oliver got out of the chair and ran out the door. When he arrived at the place, the men and boy were gone. The gold mask, however, was still on the ground.

"They must have forgotten to grab it. But where's the camera?"

He remembered that the lense was directly above the mask. Oliver peered into the tree two inches away. Its leaves created a canopy of shade and covered the entire trunk. This seemed like the perfect spot to hide a small object. He cleared some of the leaves to get a better look and noticed a shattered black mechanical object hanging from a branch. Overhead, a thin cord swayed uncontrollably in the breeze. Oliver picked up the object and examined the damage. Multiple wires seemed to have detached in the process causing a shower of static and light to overwhelm the culprit's ears and eyes. He cautiously carried the object back to Elena's office in an attempt to investigate whatever remained intact. Everyone was beginning to regroup when he arrived. Elena shook her computer in a fit of frustration.

"No, no. It can't be gone. Someone wouldn't be able to just..."

Elena stopped short when she looked up from the computer and noticed everybody standing there.

"Oliver, where were you? I thought I gave you a job to do," she gestured at the four stacks of documents waiting to be put in the file cabinet.

"You were right, Elena. There was something more valuable to be discovered. I couldn't avoid the suspense any longer."

He held out the damaged camera for everyone to see. Isabella and Elena recoiled in shock.

Elena returned quickly to her original position and questioned, "How did you find it?"

"The computer was left wide open. I figured out how you knew where to find us. Your intel is collected through security cameras."

"Is that true? I thought your magic was able to find our locations," Isabella asked.

"My magical abilities have never been able to spread over long distances. I can't track people, including Hellion," she confessed.

"How can we still trust you? Our so-called destinies have been leading towards our demise this entire time," Miranda said.

"I wouldn't go behind your backs to destroy you. May I remind everyone of the damage he's already caused? Hellion attacked Isabella and threw her out a window to die. We have no idea of his next move or any known accomplices. These cameras will give us the answers," Elena retorted.

"I don't think your words match your actions. Isabella has been the only one getting hurt in these situations. What's stopping me from leaving the journey here?" Oliver exclaimed, his arms crossed across his chest.

"This isn't about his first target. There's too much left to uncover before you decide to give up."

"Like what?"

"Give me back my camera and I'll show you," Elena stated as she held out her hand.

"Fine," Oliver replied, returning it.

She removed the broken wires from the hardware and linked each recording to her computer. The latest installment seemed out of focus, so Elena zoomed in to view it better.

A smile instantly spread across her face, "Isabella, do you recognize this man?"

Elena turned the screen around to be in her line of sight. She pointed to the person whose mask was torn off during the brawl. He had disheveled, chestnut brown hair and piercing green eyes. Isabella's breathing quickened and she gasped for air.

"Anyone but him. He can't be brought to light after what happened."

"Are you okay?" Miranda asked.

She slowly started to breath at a regular pace again and muttered, "That man is my father."

"Everyone you care about could be working against you. Hellion has connections in many places. We can choose to trust one another or be torn apart by betrayal."
