Chapter Two
"The waiting can kill you. You make a decision and then the world has to turn. The consequences unfold, out of your hands. There's only one thing that seems clear in those quiet moments while you wait: whatever you choose, was wrong. We just wanna survive the storm. We pray, please God, just get me to the other side. We never imagine what it will be like when we get there. What if, when the storm passes, nothing's left? I always said I could handle anything. I was wrong. I was wrong about a lot of things. But I was right about one thing: I was right about this"
"i want you with me every move i make"
Cristina, Alex, Lucy and Meredith were in Meredith's room. "You think he put you in his will?" Cristina asked. "No", Meredith replied.
"Next of kin. Maybe you get the house"
"I have a house"
"Well, you can give me his house. I mean, I could use a house"
"He's not my father. I've been telling him this for years. He just feels guilty because he busted up my parents' marriage. That's not my problem"
"It is now", Alex pointed out.
"Yeah, I mean, sticking me with his end of life care, doesn't ask, doesn't give me an out, that's real love"
"Well, it sounds like family to me", Lucy stated. "Maybe he is your father", Alex said. "Banged your mom enough". "Alex", Meredith warned. "Did they know each other before you were born?" Lucy said.
"They met when I was three"
"Yeah. That's what they told you", Alex said. "I gotta get back to the ER". He kissed Lucy on the cheek and left. Meredith's phone started ringing. She tried to get up and winced. "Oh, no, no. Let me get it", Cristina said, picking it up and pressing it to her ear. "This is Yang. And how about Brooks?"
Jackson approached Beck in the ER. "I got a woman with necrotising fasciitis, and the interns aren't operating", he said. "So can you... I wouldn't ask if it wasn't...".
"Of course, yeah. It's not a problem"
"Well, she's already on the table, and the anesthesiologists are lining her up. I'll see you up there in 10"
"Okay. Hey. It's awful"
"Jackson", Stephanie said tearfully from behind him. "Hey. I'm sorry", he said, pulling her into his chest. Beck looked down at the floor and shook her head.
Callie and Sofia walked into Meredith's room where Cristina and Lucy were. "Yes, yes, yes", Callie said, holding Sofia's hands as they walked in. "Hey", Lucy greeted them.
"Hey, can you watch her for a minute?"
"Yeah", Cristina said, smiling at the little girl.
"I need to get my laptop"
"Come here". Cristina crouched down in front of her.
"What's going on?" Lucy asked. "My wife's an S-L-U-T", Callie replied. "Sofia and I are spending the night at a hotel".
"And then what?"
"I don't know. Okay, I'll be right back". She rushed off.
"We're gonna let her stay in a hotel?" Meredith questioned.
Jackson and Beck were operating. "So is this the woman whose fiancé is also a firefighter, but they couldn't find him for a while?" she asked.
"Yep. Forceps"
"Wow, this wound is really deep. To get good margins, we're gonna have to..."
"I got it"
"Okay, fine"
Owen approached Aurora at the nurses station. "Hey, how are you?" she asked him.
"Fabulous"
"Yeah". She looked up at him. "What?"
"Nothing"
"What?"
"I just... I wish I had known it was gonna be the last time you and I were together. I would have done things a little differently"
"Well, was the last time bad?"
"No, the last time was Wednesday, when we knocked that plate off the counter, and I spent half the night pulling shards of glass out of your foot"
"That was not the last time"
"Yeah"
"It was?"
"Not our best work"
"Well, that sucks"
"After the kind of run we had... It's just a shame"
"Shameful"
They kissed in the on-call room, topless as Owen laid her down on the bed. He put his hands on either side of her face. He kissed down her chest before travelling back up to her mouth. He kissed her stomach, putting his hand on her chest before making his way further down.
Jackson and Beck were in Sasha's room, Brian was with her. "So we were able to remove all of the necrotic tissue, but the labs suggest that your organs are beginning to fail", Jackson explained. "Well, is there anything that you can do?" Brian asked. "Well, we're giving you some powerful antibiotics", Beck said. "And we're hoping that that stops the process. But...". "But I might not make it", Sasha finished. "We are going to do everything that we possibly can", Jackson reassured her.
"Bri...". She looked at him and gestured at the doctors.
"We want to get married now", he said. "Right now. No matter what happens, we want to be married. We need a chaplain".
Cristina entered Meredith's room just as Bailey was being taken away. "Hey, Bailey", she said. "Arizona is in the lobby screaming at nurses". "What? Why?" Lucy asked.
"'Cause she has no idea where Callie is. Or the baby"
"She didn't tell her she was leaving?"
"Oh, well, you need to tell her they're at my house", Meredith said. "Callie's not a battered woman. We're not harbouring her until she gets a restraining order. She just wants some space". "But you don't think Arizona's called her, like, 300 times?" Cristina said. "If Callie wanted her to know where she was, she'd have told her". "You think it's okay that Arizona doesn't know where her baby is?" Lucy questioned. "She's Sofia's mom, too".
"They're both our friends. We shouldn't take sides"
"It's not taking sides to tell Arizona where her kid is"
"You think that's how it's gonna go?"
Aurora came into the room. "Hey guys, do you know where Callie and Sofia are?" she asked. "Arizona is causing a big ruckus downstairs". "What happened to your hair?" Lucy said, laughing.
"N-nothing"
"Oh, my God. You guys didn't even last a day"
"Shut up"
Arizona entered Meredith's room. "What's going on with the baby?" she asked. "Nothing. He's fine", Meredith replied. "They have him in the nursery".
"Oh. Oh, I thought something happened"
"No, no. I paged you because I wanted to let you know that Callie and Sofia are going to stay at my place tonight. I think she just needs some space. She needs to cool off. And I know you're not gonna go run over there or anything, but I just thought you would like to know that she and the baby are... Arizona"
Arizona left the room.
"Arizona?"
"Is "I told you so" inappropriate?" Cristina questioned.
"Shut it"
Owen and Aurora were back at the nurses station together. "So thanks for before", he said.
"Thanks"? Are you gonna send a card on pretty stationery?"
"I'm just glad that we've given each other a better last memory"
"Uh-huh". She smirked.
"What?"
"I don't know. If we'd really thought it through, then for the last time we'd have..."
"What?"
She looked at him, leaned over and whispered in his ear.
They walked off together, he took off his white coat as they walked.
Beck entered Meredith's room where Jackson was. "There are no chaplains anywhere in the building", she said, throwing her hands up in frustration. "Everyone is out dealing with storm victims". "We have storm victims right here", Jackson argued. "What... Chaplains are supposed to stay here!" "Anybody seen my patient Brian?" Alex asked, standing in the doorway. "Firefighter, busted ribs". "Yeah, he's getting married", Beck replied. "Not without a chaplain, he's not", Jackson stated.
"Well, I can go online and get certified by that place on the internet but after everything today, maybe I'm not the best choice"
He rolled his eyes and walked out.
"The damn firefighters keep taking off, injured", Alex said. "If you see any of them, tell them to stay in their damn beds". He walked off. Beck was about to walk out. "Jacobs?" Meredith called, stopping her.
"What?"
"Get me a wheelchair"
She just walked away.
"Beck!"
Aurora and Owen laid in the on-call room bed together. "I don't think we can be friends", she stated.
"Really?"
"This will keep happening"
"Yeah. I really wanted to be able to work with you"
"Yeah, of course. But if we, you know, talk on the phone or grab lunch... Just because I'm the one who said it was time, doesn't mean this is easy for me"
"I know"
She took in a shaky breath, tears brimming in her eyes. "This is not easy for me". She buried her head in his chest, sobbing.
"Hey, hey". He put his hand on her head.
Cristina entered Meredith's room where Alex was holding the baby. Lucy watched them longingly. "They're opening him up again", Cristina said. "Yup. Don't say anything", Meredith replied.
"I'm not"
"She thought it was a stupid idea the first time and even more stupid the second time"
Alex stuck his tongue out at the baby and Lucy smiled. "You're the one who has to decide what Richard would want", Cristina said. "Wouldn't want to be you". "Thanks", Meredith said.
"But to be clear, when you're making these decisions for me, give my heart at least 24 hours to recover before you cut me stem to stem"
"You just couldn't hold it in, could you?"
"Wait, she's your healthcare proxy?" Alex asked.
"I get to make the decisions for everyone"
"Calm down, she's only half. She and Lucy are supposed to make the decision together", Cristina explained. "How did I not know about this?" Alex questioned. Lucy shrugged.
"But you're mine"
"I know that"
"Well, I mean, you will be when I remember to fill out the forms"
"You never filled them out? I did mine after we got married and I thought you did, too"
"Sorry, that whole cancer thing really slowed me down"
"I actually had cancer and I still filled them out"
"Fine, I'll fill 'em out tomorrow"
"And I'll be watching you do it to make sure this time"
Cristina's pager buzzed. "Sharpie lady's ready", she said, reading it.
Jackson was acting as priest in Brian and Sasha's room with Beck present. "Brian and Sasha, your commitment to each other is an inspiration", he said. "Your love, your devotion, it's unwavering. You aren't swayed by anything that life puts in your path. When people talk about marriage, this is exactly what they ought to have in mind".
Beck watched Brian and Sasha from outside the room and Jackson came over. He smiled at the couple before turning around, his smile fading as Beck looked back down at her chart. "It was a beautiful wedding", she stated. "What you said...".
"Can we not?"
"Why are you snapping at me all day?"
"I'm not snapping"
"Yeah, you are. I don't understand why you're being like this. I poured my heart out to you, you don't get to give me an attitude"
"That's what it's supposed to look like, you know. I mean, they can't imagine not being together. Do you see the difference between that and what you did? When I was into you, you couldn't handle it. But suddenly, when I almost die, you can't live without me"
"That is so unfair!"
"It's what happened! You didn't want me when I was okay, when I wanted you. No, you just want me now because you can't have me. Because being alone, not having me at your beck and call, that scares the crap out of you. I am done playing this on-again off-again game with you. You have left me confused about my feelings, about your feelings for three years and I'm tired of it. None of this has to do with me. No, this is entirely about you"
Owen was in the ER, where it was now quiet. Aurora, dressed in her regular clothes, approached him. "Hey. Everything okay?" he asked.
"Yeah. I'm just gonna go home, probably watch something with Beck. We have all had a rough 24 hours"
"Is there anything you need? I could..."
"Goodnight"
"Yeah"
At Meredith's house, Cristina and Lucy were emptying the dishwasher. "Zola is asleep", Derek said, entering the kitchen. Callie was on the couch with Sofia. "Alright, little miss. In five minutes, it's your turn", she said. "To be clear, I am happy to do the dishes, but there is no universe in which I generate dinner", Cristina stated. "Oh, but I would pay to see you try", Lucy teased. "Alright, we'll figure it out", Derek said. "Mac and cheese", Callie said.
"Oh, no, we had that last night"
"Well, and it was good. Right? It was good"
The doorbell rang. "I'll get it", Lucy said, walking to the door. She opened it, revealing Arizona. "Hi. Sorry to bother everybody", she said. "Can I see her for just a minute?" "You saw her this afternoon. You can get her tomorrow night", Callie said.
"I know. But..."
"You can see her when it's your night"
"I could take her on the front porch for a minute, and I'm not gonna take her"
"Do you have any idea how confusing this is for her?"
"Yeah, I realise that"
"Well, you know what? She's supposed to be in bed right now. How am I supposed to get her to sleep with you coming and going?"
"Maybe you guys should talk outside and Derek will put Sofia to bed, right?" Lucy suggested. "What?" Derek said, looking up but Lucy glared at him.
"Oh, right, yes"
"Five minutes", Cristina reasoned. "Are you kidding me?" Callie said. "She shows up here with this act, and you're just gonna take her side? It's an act".
"Callie, look at me. I'm your friend. Five minutes. Come here, Sofia. Come here, baby. Okay. Yeah". She took her from Callie's arms and handed her to Arizona.
"I missed you so much", Arizona said, smiling and taking her out to the porch. Callie shook her head and walked away. Lucy went after her.
Beck was sitting on a bench outside the hospital when Jackson walked out. He tried to walk past her but eventually, he stopped, sighing to himself. He walked back towards her and stood in front of her. "Aren't you gonna go home?" he asked her.
"Why do you care?"
"Beck, come on, just because I told you some truths, doesn't mean I want you to freeze to death"
"Go home, Jackson"
"Do you need a ride or something?"
"Oh, my God! You're so frustrating!" She stood up. "You say you don't want to play this game anymore, so don't. Go home, don't speak to me, don't think about it, don't offer me rides home. Just don't. If you want this to be over, then walk away"
"I don't get why you're so mad at me"
"I wish I was mad at you"
"I don't understand"
"I..."
"What?"
"I just..."
"You just what?"
She sighed and looked down.
"Okay, I'm going now. Good night". He started to walk away.
"I love you"
He stopped and turned to look at her.
"And I know I am way too late and I don't deserve another chance. You've been so good to me, too good for me and I've been... I've been confused about my feelings ever since I met you. You turned my world upside down and I haven't been able to stop thinking about you since then. I didn't know what that meant for so long because I've never been in love before. I don't even know what love feels like but I'm pretty sure it's the way I feel about you. I don't expect you to do anything about it or even say anything right now. I just needed you to know that it wasn't just about me. That what I said meant something that I didn't know how to say"
He stood, frozen in shock.
"Jackson, are you okay? Jackson, are you still breathing? Jackson?"
He slowly started walking towards her.
Her breathing quickened the closer he got.
He placed his hands on the sides of her face and kissed her.
She pulled away, their noses still touching, looking at him. "I'm sorry it took me so long to catch up"
"I love you, too"
"You do?"
"Wasn't it obvious?"
She smiled and kissed him.
