Chapter XXVII

Aqua was stopped in pure awe as she looked at the tomb of Demanitus.

"Why are there so many bananas? Ah!" Eugene slipped on a banana peel and Aqua couldn't help but giggle.

Max picked Eugene up and he dusted himself with a grimace.

There was a family of monkeys swinging on vines in the tomb.

The were so cute!

"Hey! Would you look at that. A family of Vig- hey! Hey! Hey!" The monkeys threw banana peels at Eugene and Aqua burst out laughing.

"Don't take it personally, G-Bug. They're being territorial," Rapunzel said as she gently rested a hand on Eugene's arm.

"They could've thrown something a lot worse," Kiera pointed out before she and Catalina walked deeper into the chamber.

"Yeah, well, let's just find those plans," Rapunzel said as she and everyone dispersed in the tomb. "This must be where Lord Demanitus found Vigor."

"So these are his great great great great grandmonkeys. Great," Eugene remarked.

Aqua was with Varian, completely entranced in the amazingness of it all.

Rapunzel found a book and brushed off the cobwebs before she opened the book. She flipped to a marked section and gasped.

"This is it! Lord Demanitus' plans!" Rapunzel exclaimed.

"You did it! Excellent! Now, could we get out of here?" Eugene asked, antsy to get out of the tomb.

"No! Eugene, this place is amazing!" Aqua gushed before she followed Varian over to the beautiful machine.

"Absolutely fascinating! And I bet he used this to switch minds with a primate!" Varian determined as he looked at the crystals on the machine. "Genius!"

Lance squealed as he prepared to hit the red button.

"Da! Don't press that!" Varian said quickly before he grabbed Aquaria's hand and practically dragged her to look at the crystals on the end of the machine.

Suddenly, a monkey came down to Rapunzel and snatched up the book.

"Wait!" Rapunzel called as she ran after the monkey. "Come back here!"

"Stop!" Eugene tried as he raced after Rapunzel and the monkey.

They ran together and the monkey jumped up onto a giant ball. Both Rapunzel and Eugene jumped to get it from opposite sides of the ball but crashed and fell off the ball as the monkey got away.

Max started chasing the monkey and it caught Varian's attention.

Aqua gasped softly and ran to help with Varian, leaving Lance unattended at the machine.

Varian and Aqua hid behind a statue. When the monkey ran passed, Varian quickly grabbed him.

"Gotcha! Ha ha!" Varian cheered before another monkey swung in, snatching up the book.

The others all ran after the monkey with the book but Lance hit the red button.

A beam of energy hit Varian who was still holding the other monkey.

"Varian!" Aqua ran forward and the monkey shook it's head.

"Lance, I told you not to-" Varian spoke as he pointed before seeing his hand was that of a monkey. "Wait, what happened?"

"Wasn't me!" Lance said quickly as he waved his hands.

"You just switched me with a monkey? And if I'm a monkey then, uh..." Varian looked up at his body.

The monkey had his finger in his ear and then smelled it.

Aquaria laughed and ruffled Varian's hair while the real Varian glared at Lance.

"Lance! Look what you did! Oh come on! We've gotta switch our minds back!" Varian shouted.

"Yeah, I love Var no matter what but it's kinda frowned upon to date an animal," Aqua said as she ran her hands through Varian's hair gently.

"I cannot believe you did this! Look what you've done to me!" Varian cried out as the others kept chasing the monkey with the book.

Eugene stopped when he saw what had happened to Varian.

"W-what the- Lance!" Eugene looked at his friend with a hard look.

"Hold on, hold on! I can fix this!" Lance assured as he aimed the machine at Varian's body and the monkey Varian's mind was inside of.

"Lance, leave it alone," Eugene warned.

"You've got it, Max!" Angry encouraged as Max went after the monkey with the book but the monkey just swung away.

Lance shot the machine but slipped on a banana peel, hitting Eugene instead.

The yellow beam jumped up and hit a monkey on a vine, switching the primate's mind with Eugene's.

"Oh, come on!" Eugene, well, the monkey that Eugene now inhabited complained before he ran into a tree.

Rapunzel, however, was making progress. She slowly approached the monkey that had the book in its possession.

"Hey, monkey want a banana?" Rapunzel baited as she held out a banana.

The monkey dropped the book and looked up, chattering happily.

"Go get it!" Rapunzel said as she tossed the banana up onto a higher ledge.

Once the monkey had gone to get the banana, Rapunzel grabbed the book of Demanitus' plans quickly.

"Got it! Fina-" Rapunzel was cut off as she was hit by a yellow beam from the machine, switching her mind with the monkey she had just thrown the banana to. "Aw, nuts..."

Aqua looked over to see that Eugene, or rather, the monkey in Eugene's body, had touched the red button.

Lance quickly pushed him away with a scowl. "Get over there! No more monkey mischief! Now, where was I?"

A yellow beam shot at Varian and Monkey Varian.

Varian shook his head and looked up. "I'm back!" He stood and walked away from the monkey with a big smile.

Kiera ran over to the monkey Varian had been switched with and a beam hit the both of them. Kiera switched with the monkey and then glared at Lance.

"Now you're doing it on purpose! Let me!" Kiera, now a monkey, ran over to the machine.

"Guys, stop! It's not a toy!" Aqua tried to intervene, the chaos around the red button causing yellow beams to shoot out all over the place.

Rapunzel was swinging from vines as she kept her sights on her body that had Demanitus' book.

She snatched up the book from her body's hands.

"Guys! I got it!" Rapunzel shouted as she held up the book before seeing the mayhem surrounding the machine. "Guys, would you please just leave the monkey button alone?!"

"That's it!" Aqua shouted, water bursting from her hands, pushing everyone away from the machine.

She grabbed the handles and aimed the machine at Kiera and then the monkey her mind was in, switching them back.

"Me next!" Eugene cried desperately, running in front of the device.

Aqua used her magic, pushing Eugene's body in front beside monkey Eugene. She switched them back and then looked up at her sister who was currently a monkey.

"Sis, give Varian the book and I'll switch you back," Aqua said calmly and Rapunzel nodded.

She swung down on a vine and gave Varian the Demanitus book before going in front of the machine.

Aqua aimed and switched her sister back to normal and looked at everyone sat near the entrance.

"Sorry, I snapped you guys," Aquaria apologized, rubbing her arm gently.

"Don't be sorry," Eugene said as he put a hand on her shoulder before he saw a monkey jump onto the machine. "Atatata! Ah ah ah, get off!"

The monkey jumped away and Aqua smiled at it, gently picking it up.

Eugene broke the handle with the red button and then cleared his throat. "I think we can all agree... that we should never ever speak of this again."

"Completely agreed," Aqua said with a  nod as she gently scratched behind the monkey's ears.

"Well, Varian? Is it something we can build?" Rapunzel asked as Varian opened the book up to the plans for the dimensional portal.

"Um, building would be a snap, it's where we have to set it up that gets a little... eh, tricky," Varian said as he looked up.

"What do you mean?" Rapunzel asked and Aqua knelt down, looking at the plans.

"Yeah, it needs to be close enough to Zhan Tiri to suck her back in and because she's with Cass in the castle..." Varian let out an uncertain sigh and watched Rapunzel stand up.

"Looks like we'll have to storm the castle and build the machine there," Rapunzel said with determination as she turned to look at everyone, a monkey on her head with Pascal. "Let's get to it."

"Alright, buddy. We've gotta go," Aquaria said to the monkey she was cradling in her arms.

She set the monkey down and smiled before looking at Varian.

"Come on! There's no time to waste!" Rapunzel said as she turned to leave the tomb.

Everyone followed her out and back into the frigid, wintry air.

💧

Aquaria walked beside Varian and she hummed softly, noticing that something was bothering him.

"Var, you alright?" She asked gently and he looked up.

"Hm? Oh, yeah, just... just thinking..." Varian said befire averting his gaze back to the snowy ground.

"You know you can tell me anything, right? If something is bothering you, maybe I can help." Aqua squeezed his hand slightly, giving him a reassuring smile.

"Eugene... right before we followed you up the cliff to the tomb, he asked me about my dad. He asked if my dad had been part of the Brotherhood too and I just... my dad isn't a bad person. I know he isn't," Varian said as he glared at the ground.

Aqua hummed softly as she listened to him and she rubbed the back of his hand with her thumb gently.

"I guess it just bothers me that Eugene insinuated my dad being evil," Varian admitted.

"He didn't mean to sound like he was saying your father is evil, I guarantee it. Just because your dad was part of the Brotherhood doesn't make him a bad person. Eugene may be right to worry though," Aqua replied and Varian stiffened.

"How could you-" Varian started but Aqua cut him off.

"Adira and Hector aren't evil. I'm not saying Quirin is bad. I know that he isn't just as much as you know he isn't. However, Cassandra has the mind trap. Cassandra controls the Brotherhood, Varian." Aquaria kissed his cheek gently.

Varian looked up and she could tell that he was upset.

"It's not your father's fault if he turns on us. No one is saying that he will for sure turn on us but we should, at the very least, be cautious. I love your dad. He's family to me and I don't want anything to happen to him anymore than you do but it won't be up to us or to him," Aqua said and Varian sighed.

"You're right... you're always right..." Varian murmured before giving her a small smile.

"I'm not always right, Var. Remember when I-"

"Yeah, I know but you are usually right in complicated situations like this," Varian cut Aquaria off. "You were right when I was getting too frustrated with getting the spectrum metric press to work. You told me that I wouldn't get it right if I kept stressing over it and you were completely right. You were right about stealing the flower and I should've listened to you. You were right about me getting over my fears."

"Rapunzel helped and it was mainly you, Var," Aqua inputted.

"But you were the one who made me realize I could do it. The point is, thank you. I don't know what I would do without you," Varian said to her.

"You would be fine on your own Varian. You're stronger than you know. You don't need me," Aqua replied but Varian shook his head.

"I do need you. I will always need you," Varian told her quickly.

"I love you, Varian," Aqua murmured with a soft smile.

"I love you too, Aquaria," Varian returned, kissing her cheek.

☀️

Rapunzel waited with Eugene and she held her arm up when she saw Pascal return with Owl.

"What did you two see at the castle?" Rapunzel asked Pascal once both animals were on her arm.

Pascal changed himself to look like one of Hector's huge badgers, then Hector, then Hector's rhino, and then finally Adira.

"I was right. She has the Brotherhood standing guard," Rapunzel said as she looked at Eugene.

"We'll have to take them out to get inside so that Varian and Aquaria can build that machine," Eugene said seriously.

"Meanwhile, I'll track Cass down," Rapunzel replied, still desperately wanting to mend her relationship with Cassandra. "One way or the other, I'm going to get the moonstone."

"Such pluck in the face of adversity," Edmund spoke as he walked passed the couple. "She will certainly make an excellent daughter in law one day."

"Dad, you were thinking out loud again..." Eugene said in embarrassment.

"No. I wasn't." Edmund looked back at Rapunzel and Eugene before he winked.

"Hmm, reminds me. Aren't we about do for one of us to stumble through an awkward proposal?" Rapunzel joked as she looked at her boyfriend with a playful smile.

"Ha! Right, whose turn is it again?" Eugene smiled back before his face turned serious. "Look, I know everything is going to work out, but in case it doesn't..."

"It will," Rapunzel assured as she took his hands in hers gently. "And no matter what happens today, you are still and will always be my dream, Eugene." She held his hand up to her cheek before she kissed his fingers gently.

"And you're mine, Rapunzel," Eugene replied with a smile of pure love and adoration.

Meanwhile, Aquaria was with Quirin, swinging around a sword he had handed her.

She smiled when she saw Varian walking over with a helmet in his grasp.

"Hey, dad. Here. I found this with your old stuff," Varian said as he gave his father the helmet in his hands. "I gave it a little polish."

"I never thought that I'd have to wear this again, but now that I must," Quirin started, putting the helmet onto his head. "I am proud to have my son fighting alongside me."

Quirin placed a hand on his son's shoulder and Varian smiled as he put a hand on his dad's arm.

"Okay, troops. Suit up!" Eugene ordered and Aquaria sheathed her new sword.

She closed her eyes and made a gorse out of water. She touched it and turned it to snow. It made her miss Delta but she couldn't linger on that at the moment as she mounted her steed.

"Alright, everyone, you know the plan!" Rapunzel called out as she walked through the citizens of Corona who were all ready to fight for their kingdom. "Charge the castle, build that machine, open the portal, and send Zhan Tiri back to the netherworld! Now let's move out!"

Everyone cheered as they all ran to storm the castle and save Corona!

Save their home!
